Kawasaki Heavy Industries has started construction of a hydrogen liquefaction plant with 50 tons per day of liquefaction capacity at the Kawasaki LH2 Terminal in Ogishima, Kawasaki City, Kanagawa. The plant is scheduled for completion at the end of 2028 and will be used for a commercialization demonstration from 2030. It will serve as the liquefaction facility for the terminal being built by Japan Suiso Energy, Ltd. under a NEDO Green Innovation Fund project, and it will exceed the largest liquefaction capacity previously announced in Japan, 15 tons per day.

Why it matters

Adding large-scale liquefied hydrogen capacity could lower liquefaction costs and improve supply-chain efficiency for hydrogen storage and long-distance transport, supporting future hydrogen demand from Australia and the Middle East.

Market context

Liquefied hydrogen is hydrogen cooled to roughly minus 253 degrees Celsius so it becomes dense enough to store and ship in bulk, which makes it a candidate energy carrier for moving hydrogen across long distances by sea. Demand for it is tied to decarbonization efforts in power generation, heavy industry, steelmaking, refining and transport, as well as to government support for clean hydrogen supply chains. Liquefaction is energy-intensive and capital-heavy, so the economics of hydrogen trade depend heavily on the scale and efficiency of liquefiers. Larger units can spread fixed costs over more output and reduce energy use per kilogram, which matters for suppliers and buyers comparing shipping routes and terminal investments. Projects at this scale also signal how quickly exporters and importers may build out the infrastructure needed for trade, and they can influence which producers and equipment makers gain an advantage as hydrogen markets develop.

Bosch Rexroth AG and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. signed a framework agreement in Stuttgart, Germany on September 22, 2026, to collaborate on off-highway machinery and hydrogen solutions. The agreement builds on a Memorandum of Understanding signed March 2, 2026, in Las Vegas, and combines Bosch Rexroth's electronics, software and electrics portfolio with Kawasaki's precision hydraulic hardware and excavator system expertise. The initiatives are subject to ongoing antitrust review.

Market context

Hydrogen is a basic industrial gas used in ammonia and methanol synthesis, petroleum refining, and increasingly as an energy carrier for fuel cells and refueling stations. Demand for hydrogen-related equipment is shaped by energy transition policy, heavy transport decarbonization, and the buildout of refueling networks. Off-highway machinery such as construction equipment, agricultural vehicles, and industrial vehicles depends heavily on hydraulic systems, which rely on petroleum-based hydraulic fluids and metal components, so shifts in these machines affect demand for those fluids and components. Collaborations that pair electronics and software with precision hydraulics can change how equipment is powered and controlled, which in turn can influence the mix of fuels and lubricants consumed in the sector over time. For chemical buyers, such agreements are generally early-stage and move slowly, so near-term effects on hydrogen supply, prices, or hydraulic fluid volumes are usually limited.
