Mitsubishi Gas Chemical has begun taking delivery of ammonia produced by INPEX's Kashiwazaki Hydrogen Park blue hydrogen and ammonia demonstration project in Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture, with offtake starting October 22, 2026. The feedstock gas comes from INPEX's domestic Minami-Nagaoka gas field, and the CO2 generated in production is injected into a depleted reservoir at the Hirai area of the Higashi-Kashiwazaki gas field under CCUS. Mitsubishi Gas Chemical plans to use the ammonia at its Niigata plants and supply nearby customers through its logistics network.

Market context

Ammonia is one of the most widely produced industrial chemicals, used mainly as a feedstock for nitrogen fertilizers such as urea and ammonium nitrate, and also in explosives, nitric acid, and various chemical intermediates. Demand therefore tracks agricultural cycles and industrial production. Blue ammonia is conventional ammonia made from natural gas-derived hydrogen, with the resulting CO2 captured and stored, which is why it is increasingly discussed as a lower-carbon option as buyers face emissions-reduction targets. Ammonia is also being studied as a hydrogen carrier and fuel for power and shipping. Projects of this kind can add modest volumes of lower-carbon supply in regional markets, potentially easing pressure on buyers who need certified low-emission material, while the broader price effect depends on how much capacity comes online relative to total demand.

Mitsubishi Gas Chemical and JFE Engineering have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly study and establish a waste-gasification methanol production technology, moving toward commercialization. JFE Engineering's C-PhoeniX Process converts waste, including municipal waste, into hydrogen and carbon monoxide syngas, which will be used to make methanol for chemicals such as plastics and synthetic fibers, or for fuel. The work is linked to an NEDO Green Innovation Fund project, with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical expected to be the contractor and a large-scale demonstration targeted for completion in fiscal 2030.

Why it matters

Methanol made from waste syngas could add a circular feedstock source for plastics, synthetic fiber and fuel chains, and supports domestic chemical raw material supply in Japan.

Market context

Methanol is one of the world's largest bulk chemicals and serves as a building block for formaldehyde, acetic acid, MTBE and olefins, which in turn feed plastics, adhesives, synthetic fibers and coatings. It is also used directly as a fuel and fuel blending component. Demand therefore tracks construction, automotive, packaging and textile activity, along with energy policy. Conventional methanol is made mainly from natural gas or coal-derived syngas, so producers with access to alternative carbon-bearing feedstocks can diversify supply and reduce exposure to fossil feedstock price swings. Syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, is the intermediate used in these routes, and gasifying municipal or other waste to produce it is one way to recover carbon from material otherwise sent to incineration or landfill. Buyers in circular plastics and low-carbon fuel chains often look for such feedstocks, though commercial volumes depend on gasification performance, cost and offtake arrangements.
