RIKEN (THAILAND) CO., LTD., a consolidated subsidiary of RIKEN TECHNOS CORPORATION, has signed a sale and purchase agreement to acquire land adjacent to its factory in Pathum Thani Province, Thailand. The acquisition will enlarge the factory land area to approximately 1.2 times its existing size, supporting a more stable supply structure for polyvinyl chloride compounds in the ASEAN region. The specific use of the land has not yet been determined, with options including factory expansion, production capacity increases and logistics strengthening under consideration.

Why it matters

Added land gives the Thai site room for future capacity and logistics growth, potentially strengthening regional PVC compound supply to ASEAN customers as demand expands.

Market context

Polyvinyl chloride compounds are formulated blends of PVC resin with plasticizers, stabilizers, fillers and other additives, tailored for processing into finished parts. They are widely used in building and construction products such as pipes, fittings, window profiles, flooring and cable insulation, and also in automotive interior components, packaging and consumer goods. Demand in Southeast Asia has tended to follow construction activity, infrastructure spending and manufacturing output. For buyers, supply additions or secured site capacity at compounding plants can ease regional availability and reduce dependence on imports, while competitors watch for shifts in regional pricing and lead times. Land purchases of this kind are generally an early step in a capacity or logistics plan, and their effect on the market depends on what is eventually built.

RIKEN TECHNOS is running joint research with Shinshu University's Professor Tomohiko Okada group on dechlorinating PVC compounds using zinc oxide. Tests with phthalate diester plasticizers of varying alkyl chain lengths reached high dechlorination rates at around 200°C regardless of plasticizer type. The plasticizer presence also helped zinc oxide disperse uniformly in PVC, suggesting the process could run on a generic kneading method. Results were presented at the 138th Catalysis Society of Japan Meeting at Kumamoto University.

Why it matters

Successful zinc oxide dechlorination of PVC compounds could give chemical recyclers a route around chlorine handling problems, potentially widening feedstock options for PVC compound recycling. The work remains at R&D stage.

Market context

Polyvinyl chloride is one of the most widely produced plastics, used in construction products such as pipes, window profiles, cable insulation and flooring, as well as in films and medical tubing. PVC compounds are formulated with plasticizers, most commonly phthalate diesters, to make them flexible, and the same additives complicate recycling because they must be separated or handled along with the chlorine-containing polymer. Chlorine release during thermal processing is a known hazard for recyclers, which is why dechlorination chemistry is an active research area. Zinc oxide is a common, inexpensive metal oxide already used widely in rubber and plastics, so a process based on it would draw on familiar materials and equipment. Any route that removes chlorine from waste PVC could affect the economics of feedstock sourcing for recyclers, though commercial adoption depends on scaling, cost and regulatory acceptance.

Riken Technos plans to cease operations at its Gunma Factory in Ota, Gunma, at the end of January 2027, after the window film and functional film production is completed and transferred to its Saitama Factory and other sites. The company says the move aims to improve production efficiency and asset use, and that employees will be reassigned within the company. It expects the impact on consolidated financial results to be minimal.

Why it matters

Customers of window and functional films may see production shift from Gunma to Saitama and other sites, while the company says it will keep stable supply of high-quality products.

Market context

Window and functional films are thin polymer sheets applied to glass or used as optical layers in finished products. Architectural window films are used in buildings to control solar heat gain, glare and UV exposure, while automotive window films add privacy, heat rejection and styling. Optical functional films serve display and electronics supply chains, where coating uniformity and consistent quality matter. Demand for these films tends to track construction activity, vehicle production and electronics output. When a manufacturer consolidates production across sites, buyers typically watch for qualification of replacement lines, lead times, and any shifts in grade availability, since films are often specified closely by customers. Consolidation can also tighten local capacity while concentrating output at fewer sites. Pricing impact depends mostly on whether the company maintains volumes and product specifications through the transition, which is the focus of its stated commitment to stable supply.
