INEOS Group opens first full-scale EU CO₂ storage site in Denmark
INEOS Energy, with Harbour Energy and Nordsøfonden, opened Greensand, the first full-scale permanent CO₂ storage site in the EU, at the Port of Esbjerg in Denmark. In its first commercial phase Greensand can store up to 400,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, scaling toward 4–8 million tonnes a year, with CO₂ mainly sourced from Danish biomethane plants. Captured CO₂ is trucked to a terminal at Port Esbjerg, shipped by Carbon Destroyer 1 and injected into the Nini West depleted oil field about 250 kilometres offshore.
Operational offshore storage gives European industrial emitters a route to capture and store CO₂ without shutting plants, potentially opening a new market for CO₂ transport and storage services.

Market context
Carbon dioxide captured from industrial and biogenic sources is compressed, transported and injected underground to keep it out of the atmosphere, a process known as carbon capture and storage. Demand for these services is driven mainly by heavy emitters such as cement, steel, refining, chemicals and fertilizer production, where emissions are hard to eliminate through electrification alone. European carbon pricing under the EU Emissions Trading System gives those emitters a financial incentive to abate, while policy support for storage capacity shapes how quickly projects can reach investment. Depleted oil and gas fields are widely regarded as attractive storage formations because their geology is well characterised and their reservoirs have already demonstrated containment. Operating storage capacity matters for the broader market because it lets capture projects move from planning to commercial contracts, and it creates a transport and storage service layer that can be priced separately from the capture equipment itself.
