Sumitomo Chemical Co-Develops LCP Filament for 3D Printing Applications
Sumitomo Chemical Co-Develops LCP Filament for 3D Printing Applications
Sumitomo Chemical and Gutenberg Co., Ltd. have jointly developed a liquid crystal polymer (LCP) filament and molding technology for FFF-method 3D printers. The technology reportedly achieves high thermal conductivity and strength comparable to aluminum alloys while remaining lightweight, enabling complex shapes and low-volume, high-mix production. Sumitomo plans to begin providing samples of the filament in 2026 and to target semiconductor peripheral components, humanoid robot parts, communications and eVTOL applications.
Opens a higher-performance LCP route into additive manufacturing for semiconductor, communications and eVTOL component makers, potentially shifting demand away from injection-molded parts and metal alloys in those chains.

Market context
Liquid crystal polymers are high-performance thermotropic aromatic polyesters valued for dimensional stability, low moisture absorption, chemical resistance and good flow in thin, intricate molds. They have long been used in electronic connectors, surface-mount components and high-frequency communications parts, where their low dielectric loss matters. Demand for these materials is therefore closely tied to semiconductor equipment, telecom hardware and, increasingly, lightweight aerospace and mobility platforms. Most LCP volume today reaches end users through injection molding, and additive manufacturing has been constrained by the difficulty of printing this crystalline material. A printable grade would let designers make complex, low-volume, high-mix parts without tooling, which could reshape how suppliers in these chains source prototypes and short runs. For resin producers, a new processing route can broaden application scope and support premium pricing, while metal and conventional plastic suppliers may face more competition in niche parts.
