Market overview

Carbon black is a fine carbon powder made by burning or cracking heavy oil or gas under controlled conditions. It reinforces tires and rubber goods, and it gives colour, UV protection and conductivity to plastics, coatings, inks and battery electrodes. Supply depends on heavy-oil feedstock cost, energy, plant utilisation and tire-maker contract formulas.

The question this report answers
How large is the carbon black market today, and how will tire demand, battery grades and new Asian capacity shape prices and supply security to 2035?

Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Six publishers cluster at USD 20.4-24.6 bn for 2025 (Mordor, Grand View, Market Research Future, Precedence); two publish lower at USD 14.5-18.5 bn and two higher at USD 28.9-29.4 bn. Market Krystal anchors on the central cluster of published estimates and tests it against volume and price. Global Market Insights puts 2025 volume at 14,700 kt; at ChemAnalyst's Q2 2026 regional prices of about USD 1,224/t in Japan to USD 1,575/t in the US Gulf, that implies roughly USD 18-23 bn. Prices in 2025 were softer than in Q2 2026, so the range is set at USD 19-23 bn and the check is indicative. On this basis we use USD 19-23 bn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.

Market dynamics
– Demand: Tires and industrial rubber took 73.85% of 2025 market value (Mordor); battery, coatings and plastics grades grow faster from a small base.
– Supply: Cabot, Orion, Birla Carbon, PCBL, Tokai Carbon and Jiangxi Black Cat lead supply; Western plants are being cut back while Asian capacity grows.
– Price and margin: Prices rose across major regions in H1 2026, with Q2 gains from 8.77% in the USA to 20.32% in Germany (ChemAnalyst); rubber-grade margins stay thin while specialty margins hold.
– Regulation and substitution: EU sanctions phase out Russian carbon black imports (ChemAnalyst); emissions and nanomaterial rules add cost, and recovered carbon black is a niche partial substitute.

Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– Market valued at USD 24.61 bn in 2025, rising to USD 25.95 bn in 2026 and USD 33.82 bn by 2031 at a 5.44% CAGR (Mordor Intelligence)
– 2025 market of USD 21.6 bn and 14,700 kilo tons; volume forecast to reach 23,900 kilo tons by 2035 at a 5% CAGR (Global Market Insights)
– Asia-Pacific held 61.85% of 2025 revenue; furnace black held 76.30% of the market (Mordor Intelligence)
– Average US Gulf Coast price in Q2 2026 was about USD 1,575/MT, based on N326 and N220 assessments (ChemAnalyst)
– Latest annual sales of 949 kmt on revenue of USD 1,807 mn, with rubber at 62% and specialty at 38% of revenue (Orion S.A.)
– Specialty net sales rose 17% to USD 184.8 mn in Q2 2026 on 8% higher pricing, 4% better mix and 3% higher volume (Orion S.A.)

Recent developments among key stakeholders
– Oct 2026: Birla Carbon published its 14th Sustainability Report; it says Continua SCM has reached industrial scale at facilities in Europe and Asia. It also showed conductive grades at The Battery Show North America, Detroit, 12-15 October (Birla Carbon)
– Sep 2026: Birla Carbon is bringing its Rayong plant in Thailand and a further high-output plant in India online this year to raise regional supply and shorten delivery times in Asia (Birla Carbon)
– Aug 2026: Orion reported Q2 2026 net sales of USD 501 mn, up 7%, helped by higher oil prices and offset by lower Rubber pricing. Specialty adjusted EBITDA was USD 39.0 mn against USD 19.9 mn a year earlier; Rubber was USD 19.2 mn against USD 48.9 mn. (Orion S.A.)
– Aug 2026: Cabot's Q3 fiscal 2026 volumes rose 5%, driven by Asia and the Americas, including its Indonesia capacity addition and its Mexico acquisition. (Cabot Corporation)
– May 2026: Cabot's restructuring plan ceases operations at Campana, Argentina by end-2026 and closes several units at Botlek, Netherlands over fiscal 2026-2027. Pre-tax charges are about USD 79 mn. (Cabot Corporation)
– Mar 2026: Cabot announced a global price increase for carbon black products sold by its Specialty Carbons business on 12 March 2026. (Cabot Corporation)

What this means for the market
Tire makers in Europe and the Americas face fewer local carbon black lines and should secure multi-year volume with Asian or Indian suppliers as well as local ones. Producers with specialty and battery grades are earning more than rubber-grade sellers, which are squeezed by contract formulas. Buyers should expect feedstock and freight shocks to pass through contract formulas within a quarter. Investors should favour capacity in Asia and in conductive grades over Western reinforcing capacity.

How published estimates compare
Publishers span USD 14.5 bn to USD 29.4 bn for 2025 because they differ on scope, on whether they price at contract or list levels, and on how specialty grades are counted. Most land between USD 20 bn and USD 25 bn. Market Krystal sets its range by testing the central cluster against volume and regional price data rather than averaging publishers.

Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Volume grows steadily to 2047, led by Asia and India as tire output rises. Specialty and conductive grades take a growing share of value. Western reinforcing capacity keeps shrinking and Asian plants fill the gap.
– Constrained supply: Feedstock disruption, Middle East shipping problems or further Western plant closures tighten supply. Contract formulas pass costs through quickly and buyers pay premiums for secure volume.
– Technology transition: Battery electrodes, sustainable and circular grades (bio-based, recycled and recovered carbon black) and lower-emission furnaces gain share. Specialty premiums widen while commodity tread grades face lower prices.
The swing factor for carbon black is Heavy-oil feedstock cost and tire output in Asia. Signposts: Brent and decant oil prices, tire-maker contract settlements, Western plant closures, Asian capacity start-ups, EV and battery-storage build rates, EU duties on tire imports, recovered carbon black cost versus virgin.

What this report delivers
Annual volume (tonnes) and value (USD) for 2026-2035, segmented by application: Tire reinforcement, Industrial rubber goods (belts, hoses, seals), Plastics and masterbatch, Coatings and printing inks, Conductive additives for batteries, Textile fibre and other uses; end use: Passenger car and light truck tires, Truck and bus tires, Automotive non-tire rubber parts, Packaging and consumer plastics, Batteries and energy storage, Construction, pipes and cables; region: Asia Pacific, North America, Europe, Middle East and Africa, South America.

Market overview

Ammonia (NH3) is a gas made by combining nitrogen from air with hydrogen, usually from natural gas and in China often from coal. It is the base chemical for nitrogen fertilizers. It also feeds explosives, plastics, synthetic fibres, refrigeration and a growing fuel and hydrogen-carrier trade. Supply depends on gas cost, plant uptime and access to export routes.

The question this report answers
How large is the ammonia market, and how will gas costs, Gulf export disruption and low-carbon capacity change supply and prices to 2035?

Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Four publishers cluster at USD 82.6-83.3 bn (MarketsandMarkets, Fortune Business Insights, SNS Insider, IMARC). Five others span USD 64.5-235.1 bn. Two volume-based publishers sit near 194-199 Mt. Market Krystal multiplies the published 2025 volume of about 194-199 Mt (Mordor Intelligence, Expert Market Research) by a blended realised price of roughly USD 420-500 per tonne. That blend sits below Tampa contract levels because most ammonia is consumed on site, and it is anchored on the USGS 2025 Gulf Coast average of USD 450 per short ton. The range brackets the cluster of four publishers and treats the very low and very high estimates as scope differences. On this basis we use USD 80-100 bn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.

Market dynamics
– Demand: Agriculture takes 78.76% of 2025 volume (Mordor Intelligence). In the US, about 88% of production goes to fertilizer (USGS). Power generation is the fastest-growing use at a 5.87% CAGR to 2031 (Mordor Intelligence).
– Supply: Main producers are CF Industries, Yara, Nutrien, Koch, QAFCO, SABIC, Fertiglobe, OCI, Acron and Togliattiazot, with China the largest national producer. USGS lists China at about 47 million tonnes (nitrogen content) and the US at about 14 million tonnes. The US had 38 plants in 2025 (USGS).
– Price and margin: Tampa settled USD 590/t CFR for October 2025 (Profercy) and reached USD 825/t in 2026 (Chemical Market Analytics). It then fell to USD 665/t for July (Chemical Market Analytics). Q3 2026 TTF averaged USD 18.1/MMBtu against Henry Hub at USD 2.9 (Yara), so European margins are squeezed.
– Regulation and substitution: EU CBAM takes full effect in 2026 (ICIS). Hormuz disruption has pushed buyers toward secure suppliers. There is no substitute for ammonia-based nitrogen in fertilizer. Low-carbon ammonia and ammonia fuel are the main new demand.

Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– Published 2025 market value is USD 82.56 bn, rising to USD 102.74 bn by 2031 at a 3.71% CAGR (MarketsandMarkets)
– Global volume was 193.69 Mt in 2025, forecast to reach 216.72 Mt by 2031 at a 1.89% CAGR. Asia-Pacific held 39.16% of volume (Mordor Intelligence)
– Gross ammonia production was 4,854 thousand tons in H1 2026, at 98% of available ammonia capacity (CF Industries)
– US plants ran at about 80% of rated capacity in 2025. The US had 38 plants in 19 states (USGS)
– The Middle East exported 4.28 Mt of ammonia in 2025, from global trade of 17.73 Mt (S&P Global Energy CERA)
– Blue Point One in Louisiana will have an average annual capacity of 1.4 million metric tons and is expected to begin production in 2029 (CF Industries)

Recent developments among key stakeholders
– Oct 2026: Yara raised its European ammonia curtailment run rate to 270,000 tons and said it can curtail up to 1 million tons a year if margins stay negative. It expects about USD 450 million of higher gas costs in Q4 2026 (Yara)
– Oct 2026: Mitsubishi Gas Chemical began taking ammonia from INPEX's Kashiwazaki Hydrogen Park blue ammonia demonstration plant on 22 October. The CO2 is injected into a depleted gas reservoir. The ammonia will serve the company's Niigata plants and nearby customers (Mitsubishi Gas Chemical)
– Sep 2026: Mitsui Chemicals, NEDO and partners reached 85% ammonia co-firing on a heat-input basis in a naphtha cracking test furnace. They plan to extend ammonia to wall burners and pursue 100% firing (Mitsui Chemicals)
– Aug 2026: CF Industries reported H1 2026 ammonia production at 98% of available capacity and said Blue Point One had received its permits. Construction started in August. Groundbreaking with JERA and Mitsui took place on 26 August 2026 (CF Industries)
– Jul 2026: Fertiglobe reported Q2 2026 adjusted EBITDA up 111% to USD 371 million. Urea utilization reached 92% in H1 2026, with record rates in Egypt and Algeria despite UAE export constraints (Fertiglobe)
– Jul 2026: Yara announced the acquisition of Gulf Coast Ammonia to lower production cost and diversify away from European energy prices. Closing is subject to regulatory approvals (Yara)

What this means for the market
Buyers in Europe, India and South Korea face a market where Gulf exports are unreliable and European gas sets a high cost floor. They should diversify across the US Gulf Coast, Trinidad, North Africa and Canada, and use index-linked contracts with volume flexibility. US producers with Henry Hub gas hold the widest margins. European and Japanese users of ammonia fuel and hydrogen need to plan for CBAM-adjusted, low-carbon supply from 2029 onward. Fertilizer and phosphate makers are the most exposed to price swings.

How published estimates compare
Published values range from USD 64.5 bn to USD 235.1 bn for the same year because publishers differ on scope, such as fertilizer only versus all derivatives, and on price basis. Four publishers cluster at USD 82.6-83.3 bn, while the volume-based publishers (Mordor Intelligence, Expert Market Research) agree on about 194-199 Mt. Market Krystal builds the value from that volume and a blended realised price anchored on USGS and Tampa data, which gives USD 80-100 bn.

Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Volume grows by about 2% a year, in line with the 1.89-1.90% CAGR published by Mordor Intelligence and Expert Market Research. Gulf exports recover only partly. Europe keeps curtailing ammonia when gas is expensive and imports more. US Gulf Coast and North African supply gain share. Blue Point One starts in 2029 and low-carbon volumes grow slowly. Prices stay above pre-2026 levels and follow gas.
– Constrained supply: A renewed Hormuz closure or further plant damage removes Gulf exports again, and European gas stays high. Tampa-type benchmarks spike well above the 2026 high of USD 825/t. Importers in Asia and Africa compete for US, Caribbean and North African cargoes. Governments widen export restrictions and fertilizer affordability falls.
– Technology transition: Blue and green ammonia plants, carbon capture, ammonia cracking and fuel uses scale faster than expected. Premiums form for low-carbon ammonia under CBAM and Japanese and Korean co-firing programmes. Older European and coal-based capacity loses ground. Ammonia shipping and power demand move from pilots to contracted volumes in the 2030s.
The swing factor for ammonia is Gulf export access and European gas prices. Signposts: Hormuz shipping status, TTF and Henry Hub gas prices, Tampa monthly settlements, European ammonia curtailments, Blue Point One and other low-carbon final investment decisions, CBAM rules, India tender volumes, ammonia co-firing and shipping orders.

What this report delivers
Annual volume (tonnes) and value (USD) for 2026-2035, segmented by application: Urea, Ammonium nitrate, Ammonium phosphates (MAP and DAP), Nitric acid, Ammonium sulfate, Direct-application anhydrous ammonia, Industrial chemical intermediates (caprolactam, nylon, acrylonitrile), Refrigeration, Fuel and hydrogen carrier; end use: Agriculture, Mining and explosives, Chemicals, plastics and synthetic fibres, Textiles, Pharmaceuticals, Industrial refrigeration, Power generation, Marine fuel, Water treatment and NOx control; region: Asia Pacific, North America, Europe, Middle East and Africa, South America.

Market overview

Hydrogen (H2) is the lightest molecule and a core feedstock for oil refining, ammonia, methanol and direct reduced iron. It is also sold as an industrial gas for electronics, chemicals and metals. Supply is dominated by fossil routes: natural gas reforming and coal gasification used 290 bcm of gas and 90 Mtce of coal in 2024 (IEA). Low-emissions routes are growing fast from a very small base.

The question this report answers
How large is the global hydrogen market in 2025, and how fast will low-emissions supply displace fossil-based hydrogen to 2035?

Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Fortune Business Insights (hydrogen) values hydrogen (industrial gas and chemical feedstock) at USD 229.53 bn (2025), growing at 6.68% (2026-2034). Global Market Insights (hydrogen) values hydrogen (industrial gas and chemical feedstock) at USD 214.7 bn (2025), growing at 5.9% (2026-2035). Grand View Research (hydrogen generation) values hydrogen (industrial gas and chemical feedstock) at USD 204.7 bn (2025), growing at 8.6% (2026-2033). IMARC Group (hydrogen) values hydrogen (industrial gas and chemical feedstock) at USD 201.4 bn (2025), growing at 4.70% (2026-2034). Fortune Business Insights (hydrogen generation) values hydrogen (industrial gas and chemical feedstock) at USD 186.37 bn (2025), growing at 4.49% (2026-2034). Mordor Intelligence (hydrogen generation) values hydrogen (industrial gas and chemical feedstock) at USD 185.49 bn (2025), growing at 4.67% (2026-2031). IMARC Group (hydrogen generation) values hydrogen (industrial gas and chemical feedstock) at USD 181.4 bn (2025), growing at 4.93% (2026-2034). Seven published 2025 estimates span USD 181 bn to USD 230 bn, and the five 'hydrogen generation' and mid-range figures cluster at USD 181-215 bn. Market Krystal's range sits on that cluster. It was checked against IEA demand of roughly 100 Mt and a grey hydrogen cost of USD 1.50-2.50/kg (Green Fuel Journal), which implies about USD 150-250 bn if all output were valued at those costs. On this basis we use USD 185-215 bn. Confidence grade A: two or more published estimates that broadly agree, checked against volumes or prices.

Market dynamics
– Demand: Demand passed 100 Mt in 2025, mostly refining and industry (IEA, via Energy Digital); new applications were under 1% of 2024 demand (IEA).
– Supply: Industrial gas majors Air Products, Linde and Air Liquide lead merchant and large on-site supply, alongside Messer and Taiyo Nippon Sanso (IMARC company list); fossil routes still dominate output (IEA).
– Price and margin: Grey hydrogen costs about USD 1.50-2.50/kg and green about USD 4.50-6/kg in Europe (Green Fuel Journal); IMARC put European green at USD 7.67/kg in September 2026.
– Regulation and substitution: EU rules split RFNBO and low-carbon hydrogen, both with a 70% emissions-saving test (Yuji Labs); US 45V is a production tax credit with a deadline.

Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– Global hydrogen demand exceeded 100 Mt in 2025, passing that level for the first time (IEA Global Hydrogen Review (reported by Energy Digital))
– Low-emissions hydrogen output grew 20% in 2025 to almost 1 Mt, and installed electrolysis capacity doubled to over 4 GW, with China behind nearly three-quarters of new installations (IEA (reported by Energy Digital))
– Announced low-emissions projects for 2030 fell to 37 Mtpa from 49 Mtpa a year earlier; projects already operating, under construction or at FID could reach 4.2 Mtpa by 2030 (IEA Global Hydrogen Review 2025)
– Hydrogen market valued at USD 229.53 bn in 2025, growing at 6.68% CAGR to USD 406.95 bn by 2034; Asia Pacific held 31.45% (Fortune Business Insights)
– Hydrogen generation market valued at USD 204.7 bn in 2025 and USD 401.3 bn by 2033 at 8.6% CAGR; Asia Pacific held 35.6% of revenue (Grand View Research)
– Air Liquide will invest over EUR 170 mn to build ultra-pure nitrogen, oxygen, argon and hydrogen units for a Japanese chip plant (Air Liquide)

Recent developments among key stakeholders
– Sep 2026: Air Liquide announced an investment of more than EUR 170 mn to supply ultra-high purity gases, including hydrogen, to a leading semiconductor maker in Japan under a long-term agreement. It will build, own and operate the units (Air Liquide)
– Sep 2026: The US Hart-Scott-Rodino waiting period expired for the Olin-Huntsman merger of equals. Shareholders approved it on 25 August 2026 and closing is expected in the first half of 2027. Olin is a chlor-alkali producer, a route that yields by-product hydrogen (Market Krystal view) (Huntsman)
– Aug 2026: Topsoe signed with Uniper to provide FEED for the NorthStarH2 e-methanol project in northern Sweden. The plant is expected to make about 115,000 t/year of e-methanol from renewable hydrogen and biogenic CO2, with FID expected in 2028 (Topsoe)
– Aug 2026: Air Products expanded the hydrogenation capabilities of its Chemicals and Refinery Processing Lab in Allentown, Pennsylvania, for refining, chemicals and pharmaceutical customers. The company describes itself as the world's largest hydrogen supplier (Air Products)
– Jul 2026: Linde said it will invest $1 bn to support a major US semiconductor expansion. Its Taiwan partner Linde LienHwa plans about $800 mn for ASUs and hydrogen production units for the same customer (Linde)
– Jul 2025: The European Commission published a delegated act setting the greenhouse gas methodology for low-carbon hydrogen, ahead of its 5 August 2025 deadline. Parliament and Council scrutiny ran to 10 November 2025 (European Parliament (EPRS))

What this means for the market
Hydrogen remains a captive, fossil-based commodity, so near-term value sits with refiners, ammonia and methanol makers, and the industrial gas majors that supply them. Electronics is the clearest growth pocket for merchant and on-site supply, as shown by Air Liquide and Linde chip-fab contracts. Low-emissions projects face cost and offtake risk: green hydrogen costs about USD 4.50-6/kg in Europe against USD 1.50-2.50/kg for grey (Green Fuel Journal). Buyers with EU RFNBO obligations and developers of e-fuels such as e-methanol are most exposed to policy timing.

How published estimates compare
Publishers define the market differently. 'Hydrogen' and 'hydrogen generation' reports range from USD 181 bn (IMARC) to USD 230 bn (Fortune Business Insights) for 2025, and 2033-34 forecasts diverge more, from USD 242 bn (Mordor, 2031) to over USD 400 bn (Grand View, Fortune). Growth rates run from about 4.5% to 8.6%. Market Krystal anchors the 2025 range on the clustered estimates, tests it against IEA volumes and cost-based prices, and treats the high-growth forecasts as dependent on project delivery, not current sales.

Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Fossil-based hydrogen stays the bulk of supply through the 2030s while demand grows with refining, ammonia, methanol and electronics. Low-emissions output builds from under 1% of supply toward the 4.2 Mtpa that projects at FID or later stages could deliver by 2030 (IEA), then widens as EU mandates and Asian demand pull in volume to 2047.
– Constrained supply: Further project cancellations push low-emissions output below the 37 Mtpa announced pipeline (IEA), and gas or power price spikes keep grey and green costs high. Merchant buyers, especially in Europe, face tighter and costlier supply.
– Technology transition: Electrolyser cost declines, cheap renewables and carbon-capture-enabled reforming let green and blue hydrogen reach cost parity in favoured regions such as China and the Middle East. Trade in hydrogen derivatives (ammonia, e-methanol) scales up.
The swing factor for hydrogen (industrial gas and chemical feedstock) is Delivered cost of low-emissions hydrogen versus grey. Signposts: IEA annual hydrogen review, EU RFNBO delegated act revision, EU low-carbon hydrogen implementation, US 45V credit deadline, electrolyser installations in China, FIDs on e-methanol and ammonia projects, European gas and power prices, long-term semiconductor gas contracts.

What this report delivers
Annual volume (tonnes) and value (USD) for 2026-2035, segmented by application: Oil refining, Ammonia and fertilisers, Methanol and e-fuels, Direct reduced iron and steel, Electronics and semiconductors, Mobility and fuelling, Power and energy storage, Other chemicals and industrial uses; end use: Refining, Chemicals, Metals, Electronics, Transport, Energy and power, Food, glass and other industry; region: Asia Pacific, North America, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Latin America.

Market overview

Diethyl phthalate (DEP, C12H14O4, EC 201-550-6) is a clear liquid ester made by reacting phthalic anhydride with ethanol. Industrial grade is expected to hold 48.0% of the grade segment, driven by plastics, coatings and agrochemical formulation. DEP is the most common cosmetic phthalate and remains permitted in most markets. It is widely used in fragrance compositions and nail polish. Supply follows phthalic anhydride (PA) availability and PA's ortho-xylene cost base. India is the main merchant production hub.

The question this report answers
How large is the global diethyl phthalate market in 2025, and will fragrance and pharma demand outgrow regulatory and substitution pressure through 2035?

Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Research Nester values diethyl Phthalate (DEP; plasticiser, fragrance solvent and fixative) at USD 153.58 mn (2025), growing at 4.3% (2026-2035). Credence Research values diethyl Phthalate (DEP; plasticiser, fragrance solvent and fixative) at USD 150 mn (2024), growing at 4.1% (2024-2032). Future Market Insights values diethyl Phthalate (DEP; plasticiser, fragrance solvent and fixative) at USD 149.5 mn (2026), growing at 2.2% (2026-2036). marketresearch.biz values diethyl Phthalate (DEP; plasticiser, fragrance solvent and fixative) at USD 142.0 mn (2023), growing at 4.5% (2024-2033). Global Market Insights values diethyl Phthalate (DEP; plasticiser, fragrance solvent and fixative) at USD 138.21 mn (2022), growing at 4.1% (2023-2032). Market Research Future values diethyl Phthalate (DEP; plasticiser, fragrance solvent and fixative) at USD 4,289.77 mn (2025); USD 4,167.17 mn (2024) (2025), growing at 2.94% (2025-2035). SkyQuest values diethyl Phthalate (DEP; plasticiser, fragrance solvent and fixative) at USD 2.0 bn (2023), growing at 5.5% (2025-2032). HTF Market Intelligence values diethyl Phthalate (DEP; plasticiser, fragrance solvent and fixative) at USD 1.4 bn (2025), growing at 6.2% (2025-2033). Five publishers cluster at USD 138-154 mn for 2022-2026 (Research Nester, Credence, FMI, marketresearch.biz, GMI), so Market Krystal anchors on that group and allows upside for pharma and fragrance grades. Cross-check: supplier listings show DEP at about USD 950-1,300 per tonne (Alibaba, Made-in-China). These are asking prices, not assessed prices. At those prices the range implies roughly 110-190 kt a year. That volume is Market Krystal's own arithmetic and is not confirmed by a volume source. On this basis we use USD 140-180 mn. Confidence grade A: two or more published estimates that broadly agree, checked against volumes or prices.

Market dynamics
– Demand: Demand comes from fragrance and personal care, pharma coatings, plastics and aerosol uses. FMI sees the USA and South Korea at 1.9% CAGR on stable personal care and pharma demand.
– Supply: Merchant supply is concentrated in India: Nishant Organics, Thirumalai Chemicals, Shree Vitthal Chemicals and Anmol Chemicals (company websites). IG Petrochemicals, India's largest PA producer, lists DEP among its products (IGPL). Chinese traders also list DEP widely (Made-in-China, Alibaba).
– Price and margin: Chinese supplier listings show DEP at about USD 1,020-1,300 per tonne. That range comes from supplier asking prices (Made-in-China). PA is the main cost input: India CIF PA was USD 1,223 per tonne in July 2026 (Procurement Resource). PA prices rose sharply in Q2 2026 on tight ortho-xylene during the Iran-Israel tensions (Price-Watch). Spreads over PA are therefore thin and volatile.
– Regulation and substitution: DEP is not among the phthalates banned in EU cosmetics. The EU bans DBP, DEHP, BBP, DMEP and some C5 and C7-C11 phthalate mixtures in cosmetics (INERIS). Some brands reformulate away from DEP voluntarily because of consumer activism and Prop 65 listings (getcosmetica).

Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– Global DEP market of USD 153.58 mn in 2025, rising to USD 233.98 mn by 2035 at over 4.3% CAGR (2026-2035) (Research Nester)
– Global DEP market of USD 149.5 mn in 2026, growing at 2.2% CAGR to USD 185.9 mn by 2036. This is the most conservative growth view found (Future Market Insights)
– Global DEP market of USD 150 mn in 2024, reaching USD 206 mn by 2032 at 4.1% CAGR (Credence Research)
– Asia Pacific is projected to hold a 32% share of DEP demand by 2036 (Research Nester)
– IGPL reports 275,110 MTPA of installed PA capacity at a single Taloja site, about 50% of India's domestic share. Its product and manufacturing pages cite 270,000 MTPA and list a DEP plant (IG Petrochemicals)
– China PA price averaged about USD 1,098 per tonne in June 2026, about 6% below April (Procurement Resource)

Recent developments among key stakeholders
– Aug 2026: IGPL posted a Rs 66.4 cr profit for the June 2026 quarter, reversing a Rs 13 cr loss a year earlier. Sales rose 31.4% year on year to Rs 617.8 cr. The upstream PA margin recovery supports DEP integration economics (Groww (IG Petrochemicals results))
– Jun 2026: Global PA prices surged in Q2 2026 on tight ortho-xylene, then retreated by June as feedstock supply normalised. (Price-Watch)
– May 2026: IGPL reported FY26 revenue of Rs 1,954 crore and PAT of Rs 23.2 crore. It said PA demand stayed stable despite geopolitical uncertainty and elevated raw material prices. (IG Petrochemicals (via ScanX))
– Apr 2026: IG Petrochemicals announced mechanical completion of its plasticizer plant on 1 April 2026. The plant is for DOP, DINP and similar products. We have not seen confirmation that it adds DEP capacity (IG Petrochemicals (via ScanX))
– Nov 2025: IGPL management put PA margins at USD 100-150 per tonne at the time of its Q2 FY26 call. Management said plasticiser revenue would start from the June 2026 quarter. It also said the company uses 30,000-35,000 tons of its own PA for downstream plasticisers (IG Petrochemicals)

What this means for the market
DEP is a small, mature specialty ester, and Indian producers set merchant supply. PA cost swings pass straight into DEP offers, so fragrance houses, pharma coaters and formulators should lock formula-linked or quarterly contracts. Integrated PA producers such as IGPL hold a cost advantage over buyers of purchased PA. EU-facing brands should watch voluntary reformulation, because DEP's legal status is stable but retailer 'do not use' lists are not.

How published estimates compare
Five publishers cluster around USD 140-155 mn, with growth of 2.2-4.5% a year. Three others (Market Research Future, SkyQuest, HTF) publish figures 10-30 times larger. They appear to use a much wider scope or different units, and we could not verify their methods. Market Krystal sets its range from the cluster, checks it against supplier price listings and a volume implied by those prices, and treats the billion-dollar figures as out of scope for DEP alone.

Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Value grows slowly through 2047, bracketed by the published 2.2-4.5% CAGR range. India stays the main merchant supply hub. Fragrance, personal care and pharma grades lead growth. Industrial plasticiser use stays flat.
– Constrained supply: An ortho-xylene or PA shock like Q2 2026 lifts DEP offers and squeezes non-integrated converters. Buyers dual-source between India and China. Spot premiums for IP/EP grade widen.
– Technology transition: Brand reformulation or tighter EU or US rules shift fragrance and cosmetic demand to non-phthalate carriers. Plastics and coatings users move to terephthalate and bio-based plasticisers. DEP volume would then decline to a niche pharma and industrial solvent role.
The swing factor for diethyl Phthalate (DEP; plasticiser, fragrance solvent and fixative) is Retailer and regulator stance on phthalates in cosmetics. Signposts: ECHA or SCCS reviews of DEP, retailer ban lists, PA and ortho-xylene price spreads, IGPL downstream capacity announcements, Indian DEP export volumes, Prop 65 listing changes.

What this report delivers
Annual volume (tonnes) and value (USD) for 2026-2035, segmented by application: Fragrance solvent and fixative, Plasticiser (cellulose esters, PVC blends), Cosmetic and nail-care formulations, Pharmaceutical coatings (IP/EP/USP grade), Aerosol sprays and detergent bases, Insecticide and agrochemical carriers, Adhesives and coatings additives; end use: Personal care and cosmetics, Fragrances and home care, Pharmaceuticals, Plastics and polymers, Paints, coatings and adhesives, Agrochemicals, Laboratory and analytical reagents; region: India, China, Rest of Asia Pacific, North America, Europe, Latin America, Middle East and Africa.
The post Glycerol (CAS 56-81-5) Market Report, 2026–2033 appeared first on Market Krystal.

Glycerol sits where two industries meet that rarely share a boardroom: renewable fuels and consumer and pharmaceutical ingredients. It is a by-product of biodiesel, with roughly 1 kg of crude glycerol generated for every 10 kg of biodiesel [20]. It is also a co-product of splitting natural oils and fats in oleochemical plants [9]. That dual origin creates the central tension in this market. Academic literature describes a worldwide glut and a considerable fall in glycerol prices [21]. Yet some of the world’s largest agribusiness and oleochemical groups are still building refining capacity. Market Krystal’s reading is that value is moving away from the crude by-product and toward the refined, specification-grade molecule.

The production route explains why. Biodiesel-derived crude glycerol is reported to contain about 77–90% glycerol, plus water, methanol and salts [20]. Argent Energy notes that contaminants such as water, salts and non-glycerol organic matter limit what crude can be used for [8]. Refining unlocks the higher-value outlets. Cargill makes 99.7% vegetable USP-grade glycerin at Iowa Falls, Iowa and Kansas City, Missouri, and can also supply crude and technical grades [1]. Emery Oleochemicals makes glycerin by splitting natural oils and fats, in grades from 86% up to 99.7% [9][10]. KLK OLEO draws its basic oleochemicals, including PALMERA glycerine, mainly from palm and palm kernel oil [11]. Feedstock exposure is real. Aemetis said in 2018 that its Kakinada unit was importing crude glycerin from Argentina and other biodiesel-producing countries. The unit was rated at about 18,000 tonnes a year, and Aemetis said demand exceeded supply [14].

The supply landscape is being reshaped by integrated refiners that sit next to biodiesel or crushing assets. Cargill’s Iowa Falls refinery was announced in 2006 at 30 million pounds a year beside its biodiesel plant [19]. Cargill later added a Frankfurt refinery to serve European demand [18]. Its Kansas City site is shared with a Missouri farmer-owned LLC that holds 53% [23]. Louis Dreyfus Company opened an 80-million-pound refinery at Claypool, Indiana in 2016 [15]. In 2025 it inaugurated a 55,000 tonne-per-year plant in Lampung, Indonesia, aimed at pharmaceutical, personal care and cosmetics customers [4]. LDC says this complements refining in Claypool and Wittenberg, Germany, and covers all major feedstocks [5]. Its Indonesian executive said the Lampung output would be exported to Europe and the US [22]. Argent Energy launched what it calls Europe’s largest dedicated bio-based technical-grade glycerin refinery in the Port of Amsterdam, at 50,000 tonnes and 99.7% purity [7]. On the oleochemical side, KLK OLEO reports 3 million tonnes of oleochemical capacity worldwide [12]. A trade report puts its Zhangjiagang, China site at 500,000 tonnes of annual processing capacity [13]. That figure covers fatty acids and glycerin together, not glycerin alone. Market Krystal interpretation: the market now has two camps. One is biodiesel-integrated refiners with crude to monetise. The other is fat-splitting oleochemical groups for which glycerin is an inherent co-product.

Downstream demand is broad. Cargill positions refined USP glycerin for personal care, excipient, food, home care and industrial uses, citing moisturising, emulsifying and sweetening functions [1]. Crude glycerin is used to lower freezing point and raise viscosity in industrial formulations [2]. Emery cites pet food and treats, dental care, cosmetics, tobacco and industrial uses [9], and lists cellulose films, deicing and antifreeze, polyols and plasticizers [10]. A distributor page lists Emery 916 for metalworking-fluid straight oils [24]. Argent points to ethylene glycol or propylene glycol, polymer plasticizers and epichlorohydrin as technical outlets [8]. In the US, glycerin is listed by FDA with technical effects including humectant, solvent and nutritive sweetener [16]. It is also generally recognised as safe under 21 CFR 182.1320 when used in accordance with good manufacturing practice [17].

Regionally, North America and Europe are anchored by Cargill, LDC and Argent assets, while Asia is the growth corridor. LDC expects Indonesia to become a production hub [5]. KLK is expanding in China [13], and Aemetis operates in India [14]. LDC cites a 2.5% CAGR projection for refined glycerin from 2023 to 2040 [4]. That is the company’s own figure, not a Market Krystal estimate. Risks centre on dependence on biodiesel policy and feedstock availability for crude supply, and on new export-oriented refining capacity. Argent’s planned scale-up of Amsterdam biodiesel from 30 to 162 million gallons a year would raise its crude output [8]. The outlook favours integrated, certified-grade suppliers. Material gaps remain. No official source found here gives glycerin-specific prices, trade volumes, Cargill capacities or named end-use customers, so these need primary research.

Key findings from the research

Refining capacity is being added at the point where crude glycerin is generated. LDC's Lampung plant is rated at 55,000 tonnes a year and sits beside a palm biodiesel plant. Argent's Amsterdam refinery is described as 50,000 tonnes a year and is fed by its own waste-based biodiesel.

Producers segment the molecule by grade. Cargill and LDC target 99.7% USP-grade output, Argent targets 99.7% technical grade for chemical users, and Emery sells grades from 86% to 99.7%.

Downstream demand spans consumer, pharmaceutical, food and industrial uses. Cited applications include personal care, excipients, pet food, dental care, metalworking-fluid straight oils and glycol or epichlorohydrin intermediates.

Regulatory clarity supports food and pharmaceutical use in the US. FDA lists glycerin under CAS 56-81-5, and eCFR classes it as GRAS when used according to good manufacturing practice.

Crude supply is tied to biodiesel volumes and trade. Aemetis said its Indian refined unit imported crude glycerin from Argentina and other biodiesel countries, while academic literature describes a glycerol glut that has depressed prices.

Cyanocobalamin is the stable, industrially produced form of vitamin B12, and it sits behind some of the most routine products in medicine and nutrition. DSM-Firmenich’s technical sheet describes it as the principal supplement form, sold as injections, a nasal gel for pernicious anaemia, tablets and oral liquids [17]. The US food rule recognises vitamin B12 as cyanocobalamin and permits its food use subject to good manufacturing practice [14]. The commercial tension is that demand is steady and clinical, while the supply base is shifting. The one Western pharmaceutical-grade producer has just retreated from a planned expansion, and new feed-additive applicants are entering the EU through regulatory channels.

The molecule cannot be made cheaply by classical chemistry, so it comes from fermentation. A US patent describes industrial production using almost exclusively Pseudomonas denitrificans and Propionibacterium. The natural vitamin is then converted to cyanocobalamin by cyanidation, followed by solvent extraction and purification [15]. EU feed dossiers describe a newer variant: a non-GMO Ensifer adhaerens strain is fermented and then reacted with sodium cyanide, giving a product of at least 96% purity [9]. Market Krystal’s reading is that feedstock exposure is spread across fermentation nutrients, cobalt, cyanide reagent and utilities. Process efficiency, meaning yield, water use and waste, probably matters more to cost than any single raw material. EUROAPI’s planned process was designed to be nitrite-free, to cut water use by about half and to reduce the number of steps [2]. Company-level feedstock volumes and prices are not disclosed in the sources reviewed.

In Europe the story centres on Saint-Aubin-lès-Elbeuf. EUROAPI says it has fermented vitamin B12 there since 1966 and calls itself the sole Western pharmaceutical B12 manufacturer [1]. In January 2023 its board approved a €40 million investment, backed by €7.9 million of public support, aimed at a 60% production increase. It named DSM and P&G Health among the customers served from the plant [2]. A later FOCUS-27 plan still listed B12 capacity at Elbeuf among its priorities [3]. In March 2026, however, EUROAPI reported a €77.8 million impairment tied to discontinuing the Elbeuf B12 project. It cited lower economic potential in an increasingly price-competitive environment, and said B12 sales were flat [5]. The release describes the project, not the plant, as discontinued. Market Krystal interprets this as Western B12 supply persisting on existing assets, with little prospect of a European capacity step-up. That sharpens the resilience-versus-price debate for buyers.

Asian producers are visible mainly through EU feed-additive authorisations. EFSA assessed a cyanocobalamin from Hebei Huarong Pharmaceutical, submitted through CSPC Dermay Europe GmbH, made with Ensifer adhaerens CGMCC 19596, and found no viable cells or production-strain DNA in the additive [8]. It has also assessed an Ensifer-derived product from NHU Europe GmbH, formulated at about 1% cyanocobalamin on a carrier such as corn starch [11]. An Orffa Additives B.V. dossier appears in the 2026 EFSA literature [12], and a further Ensifer adhaerens CICC 11008s application was listed by the EU’s Joint Research Centre in late 2025 [10]. Earlier EFSA scrutiny of one Ensifer strain flagged high endotoxin content and user-exposure concerns, which shows that regulatory quality is a real gatekeeper [13]. Chinese corporate links beyond what these filings state are not confirmed here.

Downstream demand is pharmaceutical first. In the US, generic injectables are the visible channel: Accord added cyanocobalamin injection in 2022 [20], and Meitheal launched a 1000 mcg/mL multi-dose vial [21]. Hikma’s DailyMed label lists a Portuguese manufacturing site and a US distribution arm [22]. Nascobal nasal spray is made by Nastech for QOL Medical, which holds commercialisation rights [23]. On the ingredient side, dsm-firmenich markets vitamin B12 as sourced from multiple suppliers, and says most raw materials come from Europe [16]. Univar lists dsm-firmenich B12 in FCC and USP grades [18], and trade press reports a Brenntag partnership covering Biond cyanocobalamin for biologics cell-culture media [19]. EUROAPI also positions its B12 for vegetarian diets and animal health [4].

Regionally, Market Krystal sees Europe as a policy story. EUROAPI is one of the companies notified under the Med4Cure pharmaceutical IPCEI, although that programme is not B12-specific [7]. North America is largely a finished-dose generics and supplement market, and the API sourcing behind it is not evidenced here. Asia-Pacific, especially China, appears to be the centre of fermentation cost competitiveness. CSPC’s annual results show a cobalamin-related injection pipeline, but they do not separately report B12 bulk sales [25]. Risks include price pressure, regulatory dossier outcomes, single-site concentration and the sustainability of Western supply. The forward outlook turns on whether European policy or customer resilience requirements can support non-Asian supply, or whether price-led sourcing continues to dominate.

Important gaps remain. Official sources retrieved do not give plant-level capacity, prices, trade flows, or confirmation of dsm-firmenich’s own B12 production sites. They also do not confirm whether Polifar produces or only trades the material [24]. Those items would need primary buyer and producer interviews.

Key findings from the research

EUROAPI's Saint-Aubin-lès-Elbeuf site is its only B12 production location and the company calls itself the sole Western pharmaceutical B12 manufacturer, so Western supply depends on a single plant.

A €40 million, 60%-uplift B12 expansion announced in 2023 was later discontinued. EUROAPI booked a €77.8 million impairment citing a price-competitive environment, and reported flat B12 sales.

Several Ensifer adhaerens-based cyanocobalamin feed additives have been assessed or listed in the EU, including applicants Hebei Huarong (via CSPC Dermay Europe), NHU Europe GmbH and Orffa Additives B.V. This points to growing applicant diversity in the feed channel.

Finished-dose demand is visible in US generic injectables (Accord, Meitheal, Hikma) and in Nascobal nasal spray, while ingredient distribution runs through Univar and, per trade press, Brenntag for cell-culture grades.

Feed dossiers describe a fermentation-plus-sodium-cyanide route, with premix inclusion levels of 10 to 80 µg/kg compound feed, which links cyanocobalamin demand directly to animal-nutrition formulation.
