Description
Copper (refined cathode)Market Outlook, 2026-2035 forecast; 2036-2047 scenarios
Copper market report: 2025 size, ICSG supply-demand balance, LME price, US tariff risk, key producers and forecasts to 2035. Market Krystal analysis.
Market overview
Copper is a ductile metal with very high electrical and thermal conductivity. It is traded mainly as refined cathode and converted into rod, wire, tube, strip and alloys. Most of it goes into power cables, buildings, vehicles, electronics and machinery. Supply depends on mine output, concentrate availability for smelters, hydromet (SX-EW) cathode and recycled scrap.
The question this report answers
How tight is the copper market through 2035, and what do mine constraints, US tariffs and electrification demand mean for prices and procurement?
Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Nine publishers cluster at USD 248-312 bn for 2025 (Grand View, Emergen, Persistence, Dataintelo and others). Four outliers publish USD 3.5-195 bn, mostly mining-only or narrower scopes, plus one listing at USD 114 bn. Mordor publishes volume only. Market Krystal multiplied world refined copper usage of about 28.2 million tonnes (ICSG) by its own 2025 average price band of USD 9,400-10,600 per tonne. The price band is indicative and sits inside the cluster of published refined and total copper estimates. On this basis we use USD 265-299 bn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.
Market dynamics
– Demand: China used 16.583 million tonnes of refined copper in 2025, or 58.9% of world consumption (ICSG). ICSG expects world refined usage to grow 1.5% in 2026 and 2.5% in 2027 (ICSG).
– Supply: Main miners are Codelco, Freeport-McMoRan, BHP, Glencore and Southern Copper; China and the DRC make about 57% of refined output (ICSG). Mine growth is only 1.3% in 2026, with Grasberg and Kamoa-Kakula still constrained after 2025 incidents (ICSG).
– Price and margin: LME three-month copper stood at USD 14,420.50 per tonne on 21 Oct 2026 (LME). Spot treatment charges fell to minus USD 272.20 per tonne on 9 Oct (The Oregon Group), so smelters are paying for feed. Glencore's H1 2026 net unit cash cost was 208.4 c/lb (Glencore), while Freeport expects a Q3 realised price above USD 6.50 per pound (Freeport), so mine margins are wide.
– Regulation and substitution: The US already levies 50% on semi-finished copper products. A phased refined-copper duty of 15% from 1 Jan 2027 and 30% from 1 Jan 2028 is recommended by Commerce (CNBC). Ores, concentrates, anodes and cathodes are exempt under the 2025 proclamation (Pillsbury). Aluminium is the main substitute in cable and heat exchangers, but it gains share mainly when copper spikes.

– China consumed 16.583 million tonnes of refined copper in 2025, or 58.9% of the world total. (ICSG)
– Glencore produced 397.0 kt of copper in H1 2026 and guides to 810-870 kt for the full year. (Glencore)
– The global copper market was USD 248.2 bn in 2025, rising to USD 388.8 bn by 2033 at a 5.9% CAGR. (Grand View Research)
– Freeport's Q3 2026 consolidated copper production was about 830 million pounds. (Freeport-McMoRan)
Recent developments among key stakeholders
– Oct 2026: ICSG cut its 2026 mine growth forecast to 1.3% and sees refined surpluses of about 104,000 tonnes in 2026 and 368,000 tonnes in 2027. (ICSG)

– Oct 2026: Umicore said EU copper demand is projected to rise by more than 50% by 2050. It also recovers copper from electronic waste at Hoboken, Belgium (Umicore)
– Oct 2026: Qnity Electronics ran a TPCA Show session on advanced copper metallization and thermal solutions for thin, high-power PCBs used in AI data centres (Qnity Electronics)
– Jul 2026: Glencore kept its full-year 2026 copper guidance unchanged at 810-870 kt. (Glencore)
– Jul 2026: Kiri Industries is moving into copper manufacturing. Its continuous cast rod project targets high-grade rod for wire, cable and automotive use in India (Kiri Industries)
What this means for the market
Copper buyers face high prices and wide mine margins while smelters are short of feed. Cable and wire makers, especially in Europe and India, should plan for cathode premium swings around US tariff decisions. China's refined exports reached 794,655 tonnes in 2025, up from 457,559 tonnes in 2024 (Mysteel). Chinese metal is therefore a growing alternative supply source. Miners and traders benefit from the margin, but concentrate shortfalls limit how fast supply can respond.
How published estimates compare
Publishers differ mainly in scope. Grand View and Emergen count refined metal, alloys, concentrate and scrap, others count mining only, and some publish volume or very small niche values. Market Krystal values refined usage at an explicit price band, so its range can be traced to tonnage and price.
Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Refined demand grows steadily on grid, EV, data-centre and renewables spending, and mine growth recovers as Grasberg, Kamoa-Kakula and Chilean projects ramp. Prices stay elevated, with periodic small surpluses and deficits, through 2047.
– Constrained supply: Falling ore grades, water limits, mine accidents and Chilean output declines keep concentrate tight. Smelter feed charges stay negative, refined output stalls and prices spike above the current record before demand destruction and substitution cap them.
– Technology transition: Higher recycling, hydromet processing, thrifting in cables and aluminium substitution reduce primary copper intensity per unit of electricity. Scrap supplies a larger share of refined output and the price premium for primary metal narrows.
The swing factor for copper is Chinese demand and US tariff policy on refined copper. Signposts: ICSG balance revisions, LME and COMEX spread, concentrate treatment charges, US refined copper proclamation, Chilean and DRC mine output, Chinese refined exports, scrap availability.
