Calcium aluminate cement is a hydraulic binder made by fusing or sintering bauxite or alumina with limestone, giving monocalcium aluminate as the main phase. It is used in refractory castables, in rapid-setting tile adhesives, self-levelling screeds and repair mortars (often in ternary binders with Portland cement and calcium sulfate), and in sewer and wastewater linings. Supply rests on a few specialist producers whose output depends on bauxite or alumina quality, kiln or furnace capacity and energy cost.
