Description
Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (construction grade)Market Outlook, 2026-2035 forecast; 2036-2047 scenarios
HPMC market for tile adhesives, dry-mix mortars, putty and pharma: demand by use, producers, pulp costs, India and Asia growth, and forecast to 2035.
Market overview
HPMC is a non-ionic cellulose ether made by reacting alkali cellulose from wood pulp or cotton linters with methyl chloride and propylene oxide. In tile adhesives, grouts, wall putty, AAC jointing mortar and ready-mix plaster it holds water, thickens and extends open time; pharma and food grades serve tablet coatings, capsules and food texture. Supply depends on purified cellulose, chlorinated and oxide feedstocks, and a concentrated base of producers in China, Japan, Korea, Germany and the USA.
The question this report answers
How much HPMC will tile adhesives and dry-mix mortars in India and Asia consume by 2035, and which producers can supply construction grades at the needed quality and cost?
1. Demand: who uses HPMC and where it is growing
Construction is the dominant use (IMARC, ChemAnalyst) and Asia-Pacific the largest region at about 40% (ChemAnalyst), with India and Southeast Asia dry-mix mortar growing fastest.
Demand by application (share of 2025 consumption, Market Krystal analysis)
– Tile adhesives and grouts: 22%
– Wall putty, skim coats and plasters (incl. ready-mix and gypsum): 22%
– Pharmaceuticals and capsules: 16%
– Paints, PVC suspension and other industrial: 16%
– Food and personal care: 10%
– Other dry-mix mortars (AAC jointing, renders, self-levelling, waterproofing): 14%
Publishers rank construction first without public numeric splits, so application shares are Market Krystal estimates from typical HPMC dosages in dry-mix mortars and the size of pharma and food grades; the Asia-Pacific share is ChemAnalyst's 2022 figure.
Demand by region (share of 2025 consumption)
– Asia-Pacific: 40% (ChemAnalyst)
– Europe: 23% (Market Krystal estimate)
– North America: 20% (Market Krystal estimate)
– Middle East and Africa: 10% (Market Krystal estimate)
– Latin America: 7% (Market Krystal estimate)
Where demand grows fastest to 2035
– Tile adhesives and putty in India: Growth to 2035 should exceed the global 4-5% a year (ChemAnalyst, TechSci) as Indian builders switch to bagged adhesives and putty; ChemAnalyst reports Indian HPMC capacity rising 18% by 2026
– Pharmaceutical excipients and vegetarian capsules: ChemAnalyst names pharma and nutraceuticals the fastest-growing segment, and Shandong Head is building a 20 bn capsules/yr US plant for 2026 (Yicai) (ChemAnalyst)
– Food-grade cellulose: Lotte Fine Chemical lifted food and pharma cellulose capacity to 18,000 t/yr in 2026 to meet demand (Asia Business Daily)
2. Supply: who makes HPMC and how much
Shin-Etsu, Dow (WALOCEL/METHOCEL), Lotte Fine Chemical, Ashland, Shandong Head and many Chinese producers supply the market. No body publishes global capacity; Lotte Fine Chemical alone has about 70,000 t of cellulose capacity (Asia Business Daily) and Dow added about 19,000 t of methyl cellulose capacity in Germany in 2019-2020 (Dow via ChemEurope).
Main producers and capacity
– Shin-Etsu Chemical (incl. SE Tylose) (Japan): Plants at Naoetsu (Japan) and Wiesbaden (Germany); JPY 10 bn pharma cellulose investment (Shin-Etsu via Indian Chemical News)
– Dow (WALOCEL, METHOCEL construction grades) (USA): Bomlitz and Bitterfeld, Germany, expanded by about 19,000 t (Dow via ChemEurope)

– Kima Chemical (China): 20,000 t/yr cellulose ethers (HPMC, MHEC) at Zibo
– Ashland (USA): Cellulose ether producer listed among key players (IMARC Group)
– Roquette (ex-IFF Pharma Solutions) (France): Pharma cellulosics business acquired May 2025 (Roquette)
Production by region (share of 2025 output, Market Krystal analysis)
– China: 55%
– Europe: 17%
– Japan and South Korea: 15%
– North America: 8%
– India and rest of world: 5%
Trade and supply-demand balance
China and Korea export construction grades to India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, while Europe, Japan and the USA export higher-value pharma and food grades; India runs a deficit that new Gujarat and Maharashtra plants are starting to narrow (ChemAnalyst, Market Krystal estimate).
3. Value chain: from feedstock to end market
Purified cellulose (wood pulp or cotton linters) + Methyl chloride + Propylene oxide → HPMC → Tile adhesives and grouts, Wall putty, skim coats and plasters (incl. ready-mix and gypsum), Pharmaceuticals and capsules
Raw materials
– Purified cellulose (wood pulp or cotton linters): Main raw material and the main price driver; China's pulp import restrictions created cost uncertainty in Q4 2025 (Procurement Resource) (Procurement Resource)
– Methyl chloride: Supplies methoxy substitution; tied to chlor-alkali and methanol markets (Procurement Resource)
– Propylene oxide: Supplies hydroxypropyl substitution that sets gel temperature and solubility (Procurement Resource)
– Caustic soda: Used to make alkali cellulose before etherification (Procurement Resource)
Production route
Cellulose is activated with caustic soda, etherified with methyl chloride and propylene oxide under pressure, then washed, dried, milled and graded by viscosity (Procurement Resource).
Downstream
Dry-mix mortar makers dose HPMC at fractions of a percent alongside cement, sand and redispersible powder, while pharma, capsule and food processors buy USP/EP and food grades.
Price, cost and margin
Prices were stable in Q4 2025 in Asia, Europe and North America, with pulp supply the main cost risk (Procurement Resource). Prices were flat to slightly firmer through 2025, with Asian prices up slightly in Q3 2025 on energy and currency costs (Procurement Resource). Margins are thin in commodity Chinese construction grades and highest in pharma and capsule grades.
Where the chain is tightest
High-purity cellulose supply and pharma-grade GMP capacity are the tightest steps, which is why Lotte and Shin-Etsu are adding food and pharma lines (Asia Business Daily, Shin-Etsu).
Who sits where in the chain
– Hpmc producer: Shin-Etsu Chemical, Dow, Lotte Fine Chemical, Ashland, Kima Chemical
– Producer and capsule maker: Shandong Head
– Pharma excipient supplier: Roquette
4. Market size: what demand, supply and price add up to
Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Value estimates for 2025 range from USD 1.15 bn (ChemAnalyst) to USD 2.78 bn (TechSci), with growth of 4-5% a year; IMARC publishes volume only, at 168 kt. The range sits between the two published value estimates, weighted toward the lower end because Chinese construction grades dominate tonnage at low prices. It is cross-checked against disclosed capacity, such as Lotte Fine Chemical's 70,000 t of cellulose capacity (Asia Business Daily), which shows global volume well above IMARC's 168 kt. On this basis we use USD 1.3-2.1 bn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.
How published estimates compare
TechSci's value is more than double ChemAnalyst's, and IMARC reports volume only. Market Krystal sets a value range between them and checks it against producer capacity disclosures.
Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– The global HPMC market was worth USD 2.78 bn in 2025 and is forecast at USD 3.76 bn by 2031 (5.16% CAGR), with Asia-Pacific the largest region (TechSci Research)

– HPMC volume was 168.2 kt in 2025 and is forecast at 240.4 kt by 2034, with construction the dominant end use (IMARC Group)
– Lotte Fine Chemical's food and pharma cellulose capacity reached 18,000 t/yr in 2026, within about 70,000 t of total cellulose capacity (Asia Business Daily)
– Dow expanded WALOCEL and METHOCEL methyl cellulose capacity in Bomlitz and Bitterfeld by about 19,000 t for tile adhesives, ETICS and plasters (Dow via ChemEurope)
5. Outlook to 2035 and scenarios to 2047
Regulation and substitution
HPMC competes with MHEC in tile adhesives and with starch ethers as a partial replacement; pharma and food grades must meet pharmacopoeia and food-additive rules.
Recent developments among key stakeholders

What this means for the market
Indian and Southeast Asian tile adhesive and putty makers will keep buying mostly Chinese and Korean construction grades, so landed cost follows pulp prices and freight. Western and Korean producers are shifting capacity toward pharma and food grades, which leaves Chinese producers with more of the construction market. Formulators of C2TE and S1 adhesives still pay for consistent viscosity and open time from Dow, Shin-Etsu and Lotte.
Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: HPMC grows about 4-5% a year to 2035, led by construction grades in India and Southeast Asia and by pharma and capsule grades worldwide.
– Constrained supply: Pulp or cotton linter shortages, or Chinese export curbs, tighten construction grade supply and lift prices for importers in India and the Middle East.
– Technology transition: Modified HPMC and MHEC blends with starch ethers lower dosage per tonne of mortar, while plant-based capsules and clean-label food raise pharma and food demand.
The swing factor for HPMC is Chinese export pricing for construction grades. Signposts: Pulp and cotton linter prices, Indian HPMC plant start-ups, Chinese export volumes, Lotte and Shin-Etsu capacity moves, anti-dumping actions, vegetable capsule demand.
