Market overview

Ferric chloride is an iron(III) salt sold mainly as a concentrated aqueous solution. Utilities use it to coagulate drinking water, remove phosphorus from wastewater, condition sludge and control hydrogen sulphide in digesters, and electronics makers use it to etch copper on printed circuit boards. Supply depends on cheap iron units such as scrap, steel pickle liquor and TiO2 co-products, on hydrochloric acid and chlorine, and on short delivery distances.

The question this report answers
Where do ferric chloride prices and costs leave room for margin by region, and which municipal and industrial water-treatment customers offer the best supply opportunities to 2035?

1. Demand: who uses ferric chloride and where it is growing

Municipal wastewater phosphorus removal is the largest use; Asia Pacific is the largest region at about 45% of value (Mordor Intelligence).

Demand by application (share of 2025 consumption, Market Krystal analysis)
– Municipal wastewater: phosphorus removal and sludge conditioning: 45%
– Drinking water coagulation: 20%
– Industrial wastewater treatment: 15%
– PCB etching and metal surface treatment: 10%
– Biogas digester H2S control: 5%
– Pigments and other chemical uses: 5%
No publisher shows a numeric application split, so Market Krystal set shares from producer statements that ferric chloride is the most common phosphorus-removal coagulant (Kemira) and that wastewater dominates use (Global Market Insights); the Asia Pacific share is Mordor Intelligence's 45.05%.

Demand by region (share of 2025 consumption)
– Asia Pacific: 45% (Mordor Intelligence)
– Europe: 25% (Market Krystal estimate)
– North America: 20% (Market Krystal estimate)
– Latin America, Middle East and Africa: 10% (Market Krystal estimate)

Where demand grows fastest to 2035
– Municipal phosphorus removal in Europe: Grows as the EU recast extends tertiary treatment to plants of 10,000 p.e. and above by 2045 (European Parliament) and UK AMP8 tightens nutrient limits (Kemira)
– Biogas digester products: Grows with the EU target of 35 bcm of biomethane by 2030, which led Kemira to add ferric chloride capacity in Tarragona for 2026 (Kemira)
– Water treatment in South America: South America is the fastest-growing region at 5.38% a year to 2031 (Mordor Intelligence)

2. Supply: who makes ferric chloride and how much

Kemira, Tessenderlo, Feralco, PVS Chemicals, Kronos (Ecochem), SIDRA and Chinese and Indian chlor-alkali producers lead supply (QYResearch, Mordor Intelligence). Supply is fragmented and regional; Kemira alone runs over 350 kt/yr of coagulant capacity at four UK sites (Kemira), and Tessenderlo's Loos plant is described as Europe's largest ferric chloride plant (Tessenderlo).

Main producers and capacity
– Kemira (Finland (plants in Spain, UK, Nordics, US)): Over 350 kt/yr of coagulants at four UK sites; ferric chloride expansion at Tarragona for 2026
– Tessenderlo Group (Produits Chimiques de Loos) (Belgium / France): Loos, France: largest European ferric chloride plant, capacity raised 25% (Tessenderlo)
– Kronos Worldwide (Ecochem) (United States / Europe): Iron-based water-treatment chemicals made as TiO2 co-products; ancillary businesses about 10% of 2025 sales (Kronos Worldwide)
– Feralco (Sweden / Germany): Listed ferric chloride producer (QYResearch)
– PVS Chemicals (United States): Listed ferric chloride producer (Mordor Intelligence)
– SIDRA Wasserchemie (Germany): Listed ferric chloride producer (Mordor Intelligence)
– Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals / DCW (India): Listed ferric chloride producers (Mordor Intelligence)
– Shandong Hongda / Changyi Daan Fine Chemical (China): Listed ferric chloride producers (QYResearch)

Production by region (share of 2025 output, Market Krystal analysis)
– Asia Pacific: 45%
– Europe: 27%
– North America: 20%
– Rest of world: 8%

Trade and supply-demand balance
Trade is small because the solution is mostly water and freight-heavy, so each region supplies itself; import-reliant markets such as Canada carry the highest prices at USD 544/t (IMARC).

3. Value chain: from feedstock to end market

Iron units: scrap, steel pickle liquor, TiO2 co-products + Hydrochloric acid + Chlorine → ferric chloride → Municipal wastewater: phosphorus removal and sludge conditioning, Drinking water coagulation, Industrial wastewater treatment

Raw materials
– Iron units: scrap, steel pickle liquor, TiO2 co-products: Low-cost or waste iron sets the cost floor; Kronos sells TiO2 co-products as treatment agents (Kronos Worldwide) and Kemira uses up to 70% recycled inputs (Kemira) (Kemira)
– Hydrochloric acid: Often a by-product of isocyanate or chlorination plants; Kemira's Tarragona plant takes HCl from a neighbouring site (Kemira) (Kemira)
– Chlorine: Oxidises ferrous chloride to ferric chloride, tying cost to chlor-alkali economics (Tessenderlo runs membrane electrolysis at Loos) (Tessenderlo)

Production route
Iron or ferrous chloride (from scrap or pickle liquor dissolved in HCl) is chlorinated to ferric chloride and sold as a 38-42% solution.

Downstream
Producers deliver by tanker to utilities and industrial plants directly or via distributors under annual municipal tenders.

Price, cost and margin
Solution prices in Q2 2026 ran from USD 385/t in China to USD 525/t in the US and USD 544/t in Canada (IMARC); freight and iron-unit access set margin. US solution sold near USD 525/t, Germany USD 482/t and China USD 385/t in Q2 2026 (IMARC); a US county contract fell from USD 1,235 to USD 1,218 per dry ton between 2023 and 2026 (Erie County). Margin sits with producers that own cheap iron and HCl by-product streams close to customers.

Where the chain is tightest
Access to by-product HCl and spent pickle liquor is the most exposed step, because steel and chlorine plant closures cut feedstock and force longer, costlier deliveries.

Who sits where in the chain
– Producer: Kemira, Tessenderlo Group, Feralco, PVS Chemicals, Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals
– Co-product producer: Kronos Worldwide
– End user: Erie County Sewer Districts, UK water companies

4. Market size: what demand, supply and price add up to

Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
QYResearch puts the market at USD 978 mn in 2024 growing 5.4% a year; Mordor Intelligence publishes an outlier USD 7.65 bn for 2025. Global Market Insights covers the market without a public figure. Market Krystal anchors on the QYResearch value and checks it against solution prices of USD 385-525/t (IMARC) and a US municipal contract price of USD 1,218 per dry ton (Erie County), which together imply roughly 2-3 Mt of solution a year. Mordor's figure would need volumes far above what regional coagulant capacity, such as Kemira's 350 kt/yr in the UK, supports. On this basis we use USD 0.9-1.3 bn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.

How published estimates compare
QYResearch's USD 978 mn and Mordor Intelligence's USD 7.65 bn differ nearly eightfold, likely because of scope and volume basis. Market Krystal checks value against reported solution prices and dry-basis tender prices rather than relying on one publisher.

Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– Global ferric chloride market of USD 978 mn in 2024, growing 5.4% a year to 2031 (QYResearch)
– Asia Pacific held 45.05% of 2025 revenue; South America grows fastest at 5.38% a year (Mordor Intelligence)
– Q2 2026 solution prices: USD 525/t US, USD 482/t Germany, USD 385/t China (IMARC)
– Kemira's four UK coagulant sites exceed 350 kt/yr after a 70 kt/yr Goole addition (Kemira)
– Erie County, New York, contract at USD 1,218 per dry ton for June 2026 to May 2027 (Erie County)

5. Outlook to 2035 and scenarios to 2047

Regulation and substitution
The EU wastewater recast requires phosphorus removal at plants of 150,000 p.e. by 2039 and 10,000 p.e. by 2045 (European Parliament); ferric sulphate, PAC and alum compete.

Recent developments among key stakeholders
– May 2026: Erie County, New York, set Kemira Water Solutions as ferric chloride supplier to two sewer districts for June 2026 to May 2027 at USD 1,218 per dry ton, down from USD 1,235 in the 2023 contract (Erie County)
– Jul 2024: Kemira announced a mid-single-digit million investment to expand ferric chloride capacity at Tarragona, Spain, for biogas and phosphorus-removal products, due in 2026 (Kemira)
– Apr 2024: The European Parliament adopted the urban wastewater recast, requiring nitrogen and phosphorus removal at plants of 150,000 p.e. by 2039 and 10,000 p.e. by 2045 (European Parliament)
– Nov 2023: Kemira announced 70 kt/yr of new iron coagulant capacity at Goole, UK, for Q3 2025, citing AMP7 and AMP8 phosphorus limits (Kemira)

What this means for the market
Tighter phosphorus rules in the EU and UK lock in multi-year coagulant demand from utilities, so producers with local plants and secure iron and HCl streams can win long tenders. Municipal buyers face few bidders per region, as single-vendor awards show. Producers in import-reliant markets such as Canada can earn premiums, while Chinese prices near USD 385/t cap export margins in Asia.

Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Demand grows about 4-5% a year as EU, UK and US phosphorus limits tighten and Asian utilities expand treatment, with prices tracking HCl and freight.
– Constrained supply: Steel pickling and chlor-alkali closures in Europe cut iron and HCl by-products, pushing prices up and favouring integrated producers.
– Technology transition: Biological phosphorus removal, phosphorus recovery and PAC or ferric sulphate substitution slow growth in mature markets.
The swing factor for ferric chloride is by-product HCl and iron availability. Signposts: UWWTD transposition, UK AMP8 spend, municipal tender prices, HCl and chlorine prices, steel pickling closures, new Kemira or Tessenderlo capacity.
