Market overview

MHEC, also called HEMC, is a non-ionic cellulose ether made by etherifying cellulose pulp with methyl chloride and ethylene oxide. It is the main water-retention and rheology additive in European cement tile adhesives, renders, plasters, skim coats, grouts and other dry-mix mortars, with smaller uses in paints, pharma and food. Supply depends on a few integrated cellulose ether makers in Germany, Korea, the US and China, and on cellulose pulp, methyl chloride and ethylene oxide costs.

The question this report answers
How large is the MHEC market for tile adhesives and dry-mix mortars, who supplies it, and how will Chinese price pressure and low-carbon mortar trends reshape supply and demand to 2035?

1. Demand: who uses MHEC and where it is growing

Cement tile adhesives are the largest use, at about 35% of construction volumes (Market Intelo), and Europe is the largest consuming region for MHEC.

Demand by application (share of 2025 consumption, Market Krystal analysis)
– Cement tile adhesives (C1, C2, C2TE, S1): 25%
– Gypsum and cement plasters and renders: 20%
– Skim coats and wall putty: 12%
– Pharma, food and personal care: 12%
– Paints and coatings: 10%
– Other dry-mix: grouts, AAC jointing, waterproofing slurries, ETICS adhesives: 11%
– Other industrial uses: 10%
Construction is set at 68% in line with Emergen Research's building materials share, and split by Market Krystal using Market Intelo's 35% tile adhesive share of construction volumes; regions are weighted towards Europe, where MHEC rather than HPMC is the standard ether in dry-mix.

Demand by region (share of 2025 consumption, Market Krystal analysis)
– Europe: 35%
– Asia Pacific (incl. China and India): 33%
– North America: 13%
– Middle East and Africa: 11%
– Latin America: 8%

Where demand grows fastest to 2035
– Pharmaceutical grades: Pharmaceuticals are the fastest-growing MHEC use at a 6.2% CAGR to 2034 (Emergen Research)
– Cement mortars in construction: Cement mortar is forecast to grow at 9.8% a year to 2035 within construction demand (Fact.MR)
– Asia Pacific dry-mix: Asia Pacific is the fastest-growing region at a 5.4% CAGR to 2034 (Emergen Research), led by tile adhesive adoption in India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia

2. Supply: who makes MHEC and how much

Main producers are Dow (Walocel), SE Tylose (Shin-Etsu), Lotte Fine Chemical, Ashland and Chinese makers such as Shandong Head. Named capacities include about 45 kt/yr of cellulose ethers at SE Tylose in Wiesbaden (SE Tylose) and about 70 kt/yr of cellulose at Lotte Fine Chemical (Asia Economy); global MHEC capacity is indicatively 400-500 kt/yr (Market Krystal estimate).

Main producers and capacity
– Dow (Walocel) (Germany / US): Walocel made at Bomlitz and Bitterfeld, Germany; 19 kt/yr methyl cellulose added in 2019-2020 (Dow)
– SE Tylose (Shin-Etsu Chemical) (Germany): About 45 kt/yr cellulose ethers in Wiesbaden, including Tylose MHEC and MHPC (SE Tylose)
– Lotte Fine Chemical (South Korea): About 70 kt/yr total cellulose including industrial grades; HEC plant in Yeosu (Lotte Fine Chemical (via Asia Economy))
– Ashland (US): Cellulose ethers including Culminal MHEC; HEC made in the US, Europe and China, consolidated at Hopewell in 2025
– Shandong Head (China): Building-material and pharma/food cellulose ethers in separate units; buys some building-grade semi-finished ether

Production by region (share of 2025 output, Market Krystal analysis)
– Europe (mainly Germany): 40%
– China: 32%
– South Korea and Japan: 16%
– North America: 7%
– Rest of world: 5%

Trade and supply-demand balance
Germany and Korea export MHEC to dry-mix makers in the Middle East, Asia and Latin America, while Chinese producers, many loss-making in 2025, push low-priced building grades into export markets (China Merchants Securities).

3. Value chain: from feedstock to end market

Cellulose pulp (wood pulp or cotton linters) + Methyl chloride + Ethylene oxide → MHEC → Cement tile adhesives (C1, C2, C2TE, S1), Gypsum and cement plasters and renders, Skim coats and wall putty

Raw materials
– Cellulose pulp (wood pulp or cotton linters): Backbone of the molecule; Walocel and Tylose are made from wood or cotton linter cellulose (Dow; SE Tylose)
– Methyl chloride: Main etherifying agent; links MHEC cost to chlor-alkali and methanol (Market Krystal estimate)
– Ethylene oxide: Adds hydroxyethyl groups that raise thermal gel point and salt tolerance in mortars (Market Krystal estimate)
– Caustic soda and energy: Needed to make alkali cellulose and to wash and dry the product; a large cost in European plants (Market Krystal estimate)

Production route
Pulp is steeped in caustic soda to form alkali cellulose, etherified with methyl chloride and ethylene oxide under pressure, washed in hot water, dried and milled, and often surface-treated for delayed solubility (Dow).

Downstream
MHEC is sold to dry-mix mortar formulators such as tile adhesive, render and grout makers, which blend it with cement or gypsum, redispersible polymer powder, calcium formate and fillers.

Price, cost and margin
Chinese cellulose ether prices sat near a three-year low in early 2026 before a RMB 1,000-2,000/t rise from April 2026 (China Merchants Securities, citing Baiinfo). Chinese cellulose ether prices were near a three-year low in early 2026, building grades were only marginally profitable and many producers were loss-making (China Merchants Securities, citing Baiinfo). Margin sits in modified, high-viscosity grades and in pharma grades, where Shandong Head expects gross margin above 35% (China Merchants Securities).

Where the chain is tightest
Etherification and washing capacity is concentrated in a few plants, so a single outage at a German or Korean site tightens supply of specification grades.

Who sits where in the chain
– Cellulose ether producer: Dow, SE Tylose (Shin-Etsu), Lotte Fine Chemical, Ashland, Shandong Head
– Dry-mix formulator: Saint-Gobain Weber, Sika, Mapei

4. Market size: what demand, supply and price add up to

Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Two publishers agree at about USD 1.2 bn (Emergen Research, Market Intelo) with 4-5% growth; Fact.MR and Global Industry Analysts publish much narrower scopes at USD 60-68 mn. Market Krystal sets an indicative 300-350 kt of global MHEC use at USD 3,000-4,000/t, consistent with the two USD 1.2 bn estimates. The volume is checked against named cellulose ether capacity, such as about 45 kt/yr at SE Tylose (SE Tylose) and about 70 kt/yr at Lotte Fine Chemical (Asia Economy), and against Chinese prices near a three-year low (China Merchants Securities, citing Baiinfo). On this basis we use USD 1.0-1.4 bn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.

How published estimates compare
Emergen Research and Market Intelo agree at about USD 1.2 bn, while Fact.MR and Global Industry Analysts publish under USD 70 mn, which suggests a far narrower product scope. Market Krystal builds its range from tonnage and price and checks it against named producer capacity.

Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– HEMC market valued at USD 1.2 bn in 2024, forecast to reach USD 1.8 bn by 2034 at 4.2% CAGR; construction holds about 65% of demand (Emergen Research)
– Tile adhesives are the largest construction sub-use at about 35% of construction volumes (Market Intelo)
– SE Tylose makes about 45 kt/yr of cellulose ethers in Wiesbaden with about 560 employees (SE Tylose)
– Lotte Fine Chemical holds about 70 kt/yr of cellulose capacity and spent KRW 263.6 bn on cellulose capex in 2025 (Asia Economy)
– Dow added 19 kt/yr of Walocel and Methocel capacity at Bomlitz and Bitterfeld in 2019-2020 (Dow (via Process Worldwide))
– Chinese cellulose ether prices raised by RMB 1,000-2,000/t from April 2026 after sitting near a three-year low (China Merchants Securities, citing Baiinfo)

5. Outlook to 2035 and scenarios to 2047

Regulation and substitution
MHEC competes mainly with HPMC, which dominates in China; low-clinker cements and low-carbon claims are now the main formulation drivers (Dow).

Recent developments among key stakeholders
– Jul 2026: Lotte Fine Chemical reported about 70 kt/yr of cellulose capacity, a new Incheon food and pharma line in production from H1 2026, and the purchase of a 10 kt/yr HEC plant in Yeosu from Lotte Chemical (Asia Economy)
– Apr 2026: Chinese cellulose ether producers raised prices for all grades by RMB 1,000-2,000/t from April after prices hit a three-year low and many producers ran at a loss (China Merchants Securities, citing Baiinfo)
– Jul 2025: Ashland closed its Parlin, New Jersey plant and moved HEC production to an expanded Hopewell, Virginia plant, leaving a US, Europe and China cellulose ether network (Ashland)
– Apr 2025: Shin-Etsu Chemical approved a JPY 10 bn pharma cellulose investment, including a new L-HPC plant next to the SE Tylose works in Wiesbaden due in H2 2026 (Shin-Etsu Chemical (via Indian Chemical News))
– Nov 2023: Lotte Fine Chemical raised its cellulose ether investment to KRW 79 bn, doubling the planned new line to 6,000 t/yr for completion by 2025 (Korea Economic Daily)

What this means for the market
Dry-mix mortar makers can buy MHEC at low prices in 2026, but should expect Chinese prices to keep rising from the 2025 trough. European producers Dow and SE Tylose face low-priced Chinese building grades and are moving to low-carbon and pharma grades to protect margin. Tile adhesive formulators targeting C2TE and S1 grades still depend on a few qualified Western and Korean grades.

Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: MHEC grows about 4% a year to 2035 with tile adhesive adoption in India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, and Europe stays the largest market.
– Constrained supply: Closures of loss-making Chinese plants and high European energy costs tighten specification grades, lifting prices above 2024 levels into the 2030s.
– Technology transition: Low-clinker cements and bio-based or low-carbon ethers change grade mix, and HPMC or starch-ether blends take share in cost-driven C1 adhesives.
The swing factor for MHEC is Chinese export pricing of building-grade cellulose ethers. Signposts: Baiinfo cellulose ether prices, Chinese producer exits, European energy prices, tile adhesive penetration in India and the Gulf, low-clinker cement adoption, new Korean and Chinese capacity.
