Description
Ethanol (ethyl alcohol)Market Outlook, 2026-2035 forecast; 2036-2047 scenarios
Ethanol market report: 2025 size estimates compared, producers, capacity, price benchmarks, blending policy and forecast scenarios to 2047. Market Krystal.
Market overview
Ethanol is a clear, flammable alcohol made by fermenting sugar or starch crops, or by hydrating ethylene. Most of it is blended into petrol. The rest goes into beverages, pharmaceuticals, disinfectants, solvents, and bio-based chemicals such as renewable ethylene. Supply follows corn and sugarcane harvests, plant capacity in the US, Brazil and India, and the blending mandates that set fuel demand.
The question this report answers
Where is ethanol supply, demand and pricing heading to 2035, and which blending, feedstock and chemical-use shifts matter most for buyers and producers?
Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Published 2025 values range from USD 55 bn to USD 123 bn. Grand View Research, IMARC and Market Research Future cluster at USD 97.5-109.5 bn; Fortune Business Insights is lower at USD 75.7 bn; four others publish USD 55-123 bn. Market Krystal built the range from volume times price. Global output of about 32.0 billion gallons of fuel ethanol in 2025 (Market.us), or roughly 108-121 billion litres across sources including 108.12 billion litres (Mordor Intelligence), is priced at the USD 610-820/t band in Procurement Resource's August 2026 regional table. That gives about USD 52-79 bn at commodity prices. Beverage, pharma and industrial grades sell at a premium, so the range sits above that and below the top publishers. The check is indicative. On this basis we use USD 65-90 bn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.
Market dynamics
– Demand: Blending mandates drive most volume: India reached 20% blending in 2025-26 (PIB), and the US 12-month average blend rate hit a record 10.58% (EIA, via RFA). Beverage, pharma, disinfectant and bio-ethylene demand adds a smaller, higher-value layer.
– Supply: The US, Brazil and India lead. US output reached a record 16.49 billion gallons in 2025 (EIA, via RFA). Brazil's 2026/27 crop is forecast at about 40.7 billion litres (Conab). Main producers include POET, ADM, Green Plains, Valero, Cargill, Flint Hills, Raizen and Braskem's cane-ethanol users.
– Price and margin: Prices are regionally split and soft on ample stocks. August 2026 assessments ranged from USD 610/t Brazil FOB to USD 820/t China FOB (Procurement Resource). ChemAnalyst put Q2 2026 at USD 647/t in the USA and USD 809.67/t in South Korea. Margins track corn, cane and natural gas costs.
– Regulation and substitution: Policy sets the market: RFS and E15 in the US, E20 in India, higher blends in Brazil, and carbon-intensity scoring such as Japan's proposed default GHG values for Brazilian corn and Thai cane and cassava ethanol (METI). Methanol competes in marine fuel and chemicals; ethanol also feeds alcohol-to-jet and bio-ethylene.

What this means for the market
Supply is ample in 2026, so buyers of fuel-grade ethanol hold the stronger hand and can use the regional price spread to source from Brazil or the US. Producers need to watch mandate changes: higher blends in Brazil and India, and E15 in the US, decide whether capacity stays full. Chemical and aviation-fuel users, such as bio-ethylene and alcohol-to-jet developers, are building a new demand layer that competes with fuel blenders for low-carbon ethanol.
How published estimates compare
Publishers disagree widely on 2025 value, from about USD 55 bn to USD 123 bn, mainly because some size fuel ethanol only, some all grades, and some report litres. Most do not describe their method on the public page. Market Krystal starts from volume and regional price benchmarks and gives a range, not a single point.
Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Demand grows steadily to 2047 as blending mandates spread in Asia and Latin America. Brazil's corn ethanol and India's grain-based plants add supply. Prices stay tied to corn, cane and crude, with regional spreads persisting.
– Constrained supply: Poor corn or cane harvests, or a tight feedstock market in India, cut output while mandates hold. Export availability falls and regional prices diverge sharply, with import-reliant buyers in Asia and Europe exposed.
– Technology transition: Electric vehicles slow petrol-linked demand in mature markets, while aviation fuel, marine bunkers and bio-ethylene take a growing share. Cellulosic routes and carbon capture lower carbon intensity and decide which plants earn premiums.
The swing factor for ethanol is Blending mandate levels in the US, Brazil and India. Signposts: US E15 year-round legislation, Brazil blend increases, India post-2026 blending roadmap, corn and cane harvest outcomes, crude oil prices, alcohol-to-jet plant final investment decisions, carbon-intensity scoring rules.
