2-Ethylhexanol (CAS 104-76-7) market report: published estimates, producers, 2026 price increases, regulation and a 2026-2035 forecast by application and region.
Market overview
2-EH is an eight-carbon oxo alcohol made from propylene via n-butyraldehyde. Most of it goes into plasticisers for flexible PVC, such as DOTP and DEHP. The rest goes into 2-ethylhexyl acrylate for adhesives and coatings, and into lubricant esters, fuel additives and 2-ethylhexanoic acid. Supply depends on access to propylene and syngas, so large producers integrate the alcohol with their propylene and acrylate chains.
The question this report answers
Where will 2-EH prices and supply go as Asian capacity ramps up while Western producers keep passing through cost increases?
Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Ten publishers put 2025 value at USD 6.25-7.43 bn (IMARC, Research and Markets, Straits, Reports and Data and others). Two publish lower figures of USD 2.84-4.2 bn (Fact.MR, Dataintelo). Published CAGRs run from 2.7% to 7.6%. Market Krystal's range is built from implied merchant and captive volume of about 4.5-5.5 mt, valued at the 2025 global average price of roughly USD 1.0-1.1 per kg (Expert Market Research Q4 2025 and Q1 2026 quarterly averages). Volume is indicative, set against Asia-Pacific holding about 68% of capacity (Persistence Market Research), and sits below most publisher figures, which would need volumes close to or above installed capacity at those prices. On this basis we use USD 4.5-6.0 bn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.
Market dynamics
โ Demand: Plasticisers take about 57% of demand (Future Market Insights); acrylates, lubricant esters and acids make up the rest, with construction the main end market.
โ Supply: Producers include BASF, Dow, Eastman, Oxea, Perstorp, Grupa Azoty and, in Asia, Tianjin Bohai Chemical and other Chinese oxo plants; BASF added a Zhanjiang oxo chain in 2026 (BASF).
โ Price and margin: Producers raised prices repeatedly in 2026, citing raw material and energy costs after the Middle East conflict escalated (Perstorp, Oxea, Eastman); spreads depend on propylene cost.
โ Regulation and substitution: ECHA lists a joint full REACH registration at 100,000 to under 1,000,000 t/yr (ECHA); restrictions on ortho-phthalates push demand from DEHP towards DOTP, which still uses 2-EH.
Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
โ Global 2-EH market valued at USD 6.8 bn in 2025, forecast to reach USD 9.9 bn by 2034 at a 4.20% CAGR (2026-2034) (IMARC Group)
โ Plasticisers account for about 57% of 2-EH market share in 2025 (published estimate) (Future Market Insights)
โ Asia Pacific holds about 68% of global 2-EH production capacity, and China alone about 2,800 kt (Persistence Market Research)
โ World trade in octanol and isomers (HS 290516) was USD 1.66 bn in 2024, up 7.39% on 2023; China was the largest importer at USD 409 mn (Observatory of Economic Complexity, via Dataintelo)
โ REACH joint registration for 2-EH sits in the 100,000 to under 1,000,000 tonnes per year band (ECHA)
โ BASF's Pasadena, Texas 2-EH unit has a nameplate capacity of 100,000 t/yr (BASF)
Recent developments among key stakeholders
โ Oct 2026: Oxea raises 2-EH by EUR 70/mt in Europe, USD 80/mt in the rest of the world and USD 0.035/lb in North America and Mexico, effective 1 October 2026 or as contracts allow (Oxea)
โ Sep 2026: Perstorp raises 2-EH by EUR 180/mt in Europe, USD 0.05/lb in the USA and USD 210/mt in the rest of the world. It cites raw material and energy costs after the Middle East conflict re-escalated (Perstorp)
โ Aug 2026: Perstorp raises 2-EH by EUR 75-100/mt in Europe, effective immediately or as contracts allow, with other terms unchanged (Perstorp)
โ Sep 2026: Oxea notifies a EUR 70/mt, USD 80/mt and USD 0.04/lb increase on 2-EH effective 1 September 2026, following earlier 2026 rounds (Oxea)
โ Mar 2026: BASF formally inaugurates its Zhanjiang Verbund site in China. Its propylene chain includes oxo alcohols and acrylics, and BASF plans to supply 2-EH and n-butanol to UPC Technology from the site (BASF)
What this means for the market
Buyers of 2-EH in plasticiser and acrylate chains face a steady run of producer-announced increases in Europe and North America. Contract timing and index links matter more than list prices. South China buyers gain a local integrated source from BASF, which lowers dependence on imports. Producers without propylene integration carry the most margin risk, while integrated players such as BASF and Eastman keep more control over cost.
How published estimates compare
Most publishers cluster between USD 6.25 bn and 7.43 bn for 2025 but differ widely on growth, from 2.7% to 7.6% a year. Two publishers, Fact.MR and Dataintelo, publish much lower values, apparently because of different scope or price basis. Market Krystal sets its range from implied volume multiplied by recognised price series, so it can be checked against capacity and trade data.
Strategic scenarios to 2047
โ Base: Demand grows broadly with PVC, construction and acrylates. Asian capacity, led by integrated Chinese plants and BASF Zhanjiang, keeps Asian prices capped. Western producers recover costs through staged increases, and 2-EH trade shifts towards Asian self-sufficiency by 2047.
โ Constrained supply: Feedstock or energy shocks, such as a prolonged Middle East disruption, and plant outages in Europe or the US Gulf Coast tighten the market. Regional premiums widen, buyers pay for security of supply, and importers such as India, Turkey and Pakistan compete for cargoes.
โ Technology transition: Regulation moves plasticiser demand from DEHP to DOTP and other non-phthalate options. Biomass-balance and low-carbon 2-EH gain a premium in Europe. Syngas from waste gas, as BASF uses at Zhanjiang, lowers the carbon footprint of new capacity.
The swing factor for 2-EH is Pace of Chinese oxo capacity additions against regional propylene cost. Signposts: Producer price notices from Eastman, Oxea and Perstorp, propylene and n-butyraldehyde costs, Chinese octanol import volumes (HS 290516), operating rates at BASF Zhanjiang, ECHA and ortho-phthalate restriction decisions, DOTP and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate capacity announcements.
