BMW Group begins series production of Gen6 batteries in Shenyang, China
BMW Group has begun series production of its Gen6 high-voltage batteries at Shenyang, China, the third site in its global Gen6 production network after Debrecen, Hungary and Irlbach-Straßkirchen, Germany. The locally built batteries will power future Neue Klasse all-electric models assembled in China. The new cylindrical cells, integrated via a cell-to-pack concept, deliver more than 20 percent higher energy density and up to 30 percent faster charging and greater range. Battery assembly in Woodruff, USA and San Luis Potosí, Mexico will also start series production in the coming months.
Local cell-to-pack battery assembly in China and new US and Mexico sites shorten supply routes for Neue Klasse EV production and shift battery demand toward regional supplier bases.

Market context
Lithium-ion high-voltage traction batteries are built from cathode materials such as nickel-manganese-cobalt or lithium iron phosphate chemistries, graphite or silicon-containing anodes, lithium salts, electrolytes and separators. Demand for these materials is driven mainly by electric vehicle manufacturing, with stationary energy storage as a secondary market. Cell format, energy density and charging speed decisions by automakers shape which cathode, anode and electrolyte grades suppliers need to produce. Shifting cell assembly closer to vehicle plants tends to move purchasing toward regional supplier networks, which can favour producers located in the same region as the assembly sites and reduce long-haul logistics for bulky cell components. For chemical buyers, such localisation trends matter because they change where precursor and electrolyte volumes are concentrated, and they can add pressure on established suppliers to qualify products in each region. Price effects depend on overall battery demand and on how quickly new capacity comes online.
