Mitsui Chemicals launches InnoCell P-Type oxygen-permeable cell culture plates
Mitsui Chemicals launches InnoCell P-Type oxygen-permeable cell culture plates
Mitsui Chemicals has launched InnoCell™ P-Type, a new adherent cell culture plate that combines its proprietary highly oxygen-permeable material with original surface treatment technology, as of October 1, 2026. The plate targets organoid and 3D cell-tissue models for drug efficacy and toxicity screening. In a Kansai Medical University study, human iPS cell-derived cardiac organoids cultured on the plates formed tissue with more uniform thickness and a thicker cardiomyocyte layer than conventional polystyrene plates. In China, the product is sold under the brand name 亿能适迩™.

Market context
Cell culture plates are the physical substrate on which cells are grown, and their material and surface chemistry shape how cells attach, spread and receive nutrients and oxygen. Polystyrene has been the standard plate material for decades because it is cheap, rigid and easy to mold, but it is relatively impermeable to gases, which can limit oxygen supply to dense cell aggregates. Demand for more physiologically relevant models, such as organoids and 3D tissue constructs, is being driven by pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies that want better predictions of drug efficacy and toxicity before clinical testing. Demand also comes from academic labs working in regenerative medicine and personalized medicine. Specialty materials that improve gas permeability and cell adhesion can command premium pricing relative to commodity plastics, and they typically compete on performance and validation data rather than on price alone. Suppliers of established plate products may face pressure to add comparable features.
