Description
4-Fluoronitrobenzene (4-FNB)Market Outlook, 2026-2035 forecast; 2036-2047 scenarios
4-Fluoronitrobenzene (350-46-9) market report: Halex supply in China and India, flufenacet and pharma demand, value chain, prices and outlook to 2035.
Market overview
4-FNB is a fluorinated nitroaromatic, a pale yellow low-melting solid made by swapping chlorine for fluorine on 4-chloronitrobenzene. It is the main precursor of 4-fluoroaniline and other para-fluorophenyl building blocks used in herbicides, pharmaceuticals and liquid-crystal materials. Supply is driven by Halex capacity, potassium fluoride cost and nitrochlorobenzene availability in China and India.
The question this report answers
How will the EU exit of flufenacet and growth in pharma and liquid-crystal uses reshape demand and supply for 4-FNB to 2035?
1. Demand: who uses 4-FNB and where it is growing
4-Fluoroaniline for crop protection and pharma is the largest use, and China is the largest consuming region (Market Krystal estimate).
Demand by application (share of 2025 consumption, Market Krystal analysis)
– Herbicide intermediates (4-fluoroaniline, flufenacet chain): 40%
– Pharmaceutical intermediates: 35%
– Dyes and other fine chemicals: 15%
– Liquid-crystal and electronic materials: 10%
Publishers name pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals as the top two uses without a full split; shares follow those rankings, the flufenacet chain and the location of Halex and downstream plants.
Demand by region (share of 2025 consumption, Market Krystal analysis)
– China: 45%
– India: 20%
– Europe: 20%
– North America: 10%
– Rest of world: 5%
Where demand grows fastest to 2035
– Pharmaceutical intermediates: WiseGuy Reports puts pharmaceuticals above 40% of revenue and expects the market to grow 7.3% a year to 2032 (WiseGuy Reports)
– Liquid-crystal materials: Zhongxin Fluoride Materials is adding 4-FNB and 4-fluoroaniline capacity aimed partly at new liquid-crystal materials (Tebon Securities)
2. Supply: who makes 4-FNB and how much
Halex producers in China and India lead, including Aarti Industries, Navin Fluorine, Gujarat Fluorochemicals and Zhongxin Fluoride Materials (company pages and filings; Tebon Securities). No global capacity figure is published; Market Krystal places nameplate at 15,000-25,000 t/yr, with China holding most of it and Zhongxin adding 500 t/yr (Market Krystal estimate; Tebon Securities).
Main producers and capacity
– Aarti Industries (India): listed in its Halex chemistry product range
– Navin Fluorine International (India): listed in its specialty fluorochemicals product range (Navin Fluorine product list)
– Gujarat Fluorochemicals (India): 4-FNB and 4-fluoroaniline in Dahej expansion; feed of 320 MT/month 4-chloronitrobenzene
– Zhejiang Zhongxin Fluoride Materials (China): 500 t/yr under construction (2023) (Tebon Securities)
– Thermo Fisher Scientific (Acros Organics) (USA/Belgium): 99% catalogue grade, 100-500 g packs (Thermo Fisher Scientific)
Production by region (share of 2025 output, Market Krystal analysis)
– China: 65%
– India: 25%
– Europe and rest of world: 10%
Trade and supply-demand balance
China and India export 4-FNB and 4-fluoroaniline to European and Japanese agro and pharma makers; Europe is a net importer whose herbicide pull weakens after the flufenacet exit (Market Krystal estimate; European Commission).
3. Value chain: from feedstock to end market
4-Chloronitrobenzene + Potassium fluoride + Sulfolane and phase-transfer catalyst (TBAB) → 4-FNB → Herbicide intermediates (4-fluoroaniline, flufenacet chain), Pharmaceutical intermediates, Dyes and other fine chemicals
Raw materials
– 4-Chloronitrobenzene: aromatic backbone and the largest cost line (Market Krystal estimate)
– Potassium fluoride: fluorine source for the Halex exchange; about 0.37 t KF per t of 4-chloronitrobenzene in GFL's design (Gujarat Fluorochemicals)
– Sulfolane and phase-transfer catalyst (TBAB): must be recycled for the process to pay (Gujarat Fluorochemicals)
Production route
Halex exchange of 4-chloronitrobenzene with potassium fluoride in a polar aprotic solvent at high temperature is the standard route; Halex replaces an activated chlorine with fluoride in one step (Chemical Weekly).
Downstream
4-FNB is hydrogenated to 4-fluoroaniline or reductively alkylated to 4-fluoro-N-isopropylaniline for flufenacet, and is used directly for para-fluorophenyl APIs and liquid-crystal intermediates.
Price, cost and margin
Bulk prices are indicative at USD 3.5-6/kg; margin depends on KF recovery and solvent recycling in the Halex step. Bulk 4-FNB trades at an indicative USD 3.5-6/kg against about USD 1.36/g for 99% research packs (Thermo Fisher Scientific). Margin sits with integrated producers that make their own nitrochlorobenzene and recover KF and solvent.
Where the chain is tightest
Halex reactors and solvent recovery are the constrained step, because they are hazardous, energy-heavy and closely watched by Chinese safety regulators.
Who sits where in the chain
– Producer: Aarti Industries, Navin Fluorine International, Gujarat Fluorochemicals, Zhejiang Zhongxin Fluoride Materials
– End user: Bayer CropScience
– Distributor: Thermo Fisher Scientific
4. Market size: what demand, supply and price add up to
Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Two publishers give headline values: Market Research Forecast at USD 11.14 bn for 2025 and WiseGuy Reports at USD 1.99 bn for 2024. Allied Market Research and BAC Reports cover 4-FNB without public figures. The range assumes 8,000-15,000 t of global demand, led by 4-fluoroaniline for herbicides and drugs, at an indicative bulk price of USD 3.5-6/kg. Published headline values are far above what this volume and price can support. On this basis we use USD 30-90 mn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.
How published estimates compare
Market Research Forecast and WiseGuy Reports publish billion-dollar values with internal inconsistencies, which look closer to wider fluoroaromatic markets than to 4-FNB alone. Market Krystal builds its range from demand volume and indicative bulk price, which yields tens of millions of dollars.
Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– WiseGuy Reports sizes the market at USD 1.99 bn in 2024, growing 7.3% a year to USD 3.5 bn in 2032 (WiseGuy Reports)
– Market Research Forecast publishes USD 11.14 bn for 2025 and an 11.98% CAGR (Market Research Forecast)
– Gujarat Fluorochemicals' Dahej plan feeds 320 MT/month of 4-chloronitrobenzene and 118 MT/month of KF to 4-FNB, and 364 MT/month of 4-FNB to 4-fluoroaniline (Gujarat Fluorochemicals)
– Zhongxin Fluoride Materials has 500 t/yr of 4-FNB and 720 t/yr of 4-fluoroaniline under construction (Tebon Securities)
– Flufenacet authorisations in the EU must be withdrawn by 10 December 2025, with grace periods ending by 10 December 2026 (European Commission)
5. Outlook to 2035 and scenarios to 2047
Regulation and substitution
The EU did not renew flufenacet in May 2025, removing a key European outlet for 4-fluoroaniline (European Commission).
Recent developments among key stakeholders
– Aug 2026: CARE upgraded Navin Fluorine to AA+ as FY26 revenue rose about 41%; specialty chemicals were about 35% of sales (CARE Ratings)
– May 2025: The EU adopted Regulation 2025/910 not renewing flufenacet, citing thyroid endocrine disruption and TFA groundwater risk (European Commission)
– Jun 2023: Zhongxin Fluoride Materials had 500 t/yr of 4-FNB and 720 t/yr of 4-fluoroaniline under construction (Tebon Securities)
What this means for the market
European demand for 4-FNB through flufenacet falls from 2026, so producers must redirect volume to pharma, liquid-crystal and non-EU herbicide markets. Indian Halex producers such as Aarti, Navin and Gujarat Fluorochemicals are well placed for pharma contracts that need non-Chinese supply. Buyers should expect softer prices in the near term as herbicide volume shifts.
Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Pharma and liquid-crystal growth offsets the European flufenacet loss, and volume grows 2-3% a year to 2047.
– Constrained supply: Chinese Halex closures after safety incidents tighten supply and lift prices 20-30%, favouring Indian producers.
– Technology transition: Direct fluorination and new herbicide chemistry reduce reliance on 4-fluoroaniline in crop protection.
The swing factor for 4-FNB is Flufenacet registrations outside the EU. Signposts: Flufenacet registrations in the US, UK and Australia, Chinese Halex plant inspections, KF price, Indian specialty capex.
