Description
AcetonitrileMarket Outlook, 2026-2035 forecast; 2036-2047 scenarios
Evidence-led market analysis connecting supply, demand, pricing, trade, participants and commercial opportunities.
Market overview
Acetonitrile (methyl cyanide, CAS 75-05-8) is a polar aprotic solvent used in API synthesis, peptide and oligonucleotide manufacture, HPLC analysis, agrochemical intermediates and DNA synthesis. Globally most of it is recovered as a by-product of acrylonitrile production, so supply follows acrylonitrile operating rates rather than acetonitrile demand. India is the exception: Alkyl Amines, Balaji Amines and Jindal Speciality make it on purpose, which gives Indian supply a different cost base from by-product producers in China, Russia and Taiwan.
The question this report answers
How much acetonitrile does India consume by grade, how much of it can domestic plants supply after the 2025 anti-dumping duties, and what price will pharma buyers pay through 2030?
Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
HDFC Securities puts Indian demand above 40 KTPA, with FY25 imports of 19-20 KTPA and import realisations of about INR 150-170/kg. At those volumes and prices, and an exchange rate of INR 85-88/USD, Indian consumption is worth roughly USD 68-80 mn. Confidence grade B: one published volume estimate checked against reported import prices.
Market dynamics
– Demand: pharma API synthesis and HPLC dominate Indian use; peptide and oligonucleotide manufacturing adds high-purity demand
– Supply: Alkyl Amines has about 30 KTPA but ran near 60% utilisation because of low-priced imports; China supplied about 70% of FY25 imports, mostly pharma grade
– Price and margin: prices and spreads were at six-year lows before the duty; analysts expect domestic realisations to rise by about INR 16/kg
– Regulation: five-year anti-dumping duty of up to USD 481/t on China, Russia and Taiwan from June 2025, covering all purity levels
Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– Global acetonitrile market: USD 431.2 mn (2024) rising to USD 824.8 mn by 2034, 6.7% CAGR; Asia-Pacific holds 38.2% (Market.us)
– India: demand above 40 KTPA; FY25 imports 19-20 KTPA; Alkyl Amines capacity about 30 KTPA at about 60% utilisation (HDFC Securities, June 2025)
– Anti-dumping duty: USD 200-480/t (about INR 17-42/kg) for five years (HDFC Securities); up to USD 481/t on China, Russia and Taiwan (ChemXpert)
Recent developments among key stakeholders
– Apr 2024: DGTR initiated an anti-dumping investigation on acetonitrile from China, Russia and Taiwan (ICIS)
– Jun 2025: Finance Ministry imposed five-year anti-dumping duties of up to USD 481/t; import prices expected to move from INR 100-170/kg to INR 120-200/kg (HDFC Securities)
– 2025-2026: Alkyl Amines, Balaji Amines and Jindal Speciality positioned to lift utilisation as duty-paid imports become dearer (HDFC Securities)
What this means for the market
The duty transfers pricing power to Indian producers but does not close the supply gap: domestic capacity at full utilisation still leaves India importing a meaningful share, now at duty-paid prices. Pharma buyers face a choice between domestic contracts and non-dumped origins. The report quantifies landed cost by origin and the volume Indian plants can realistically add.
How published estimates compare
Global estimates cluster around USD 0.4-0.5 bn, which is consistent with world volumes of a few hundred kilotonnes at typical prices. India-specific figures are rarely published; our estimate rebuilds demand from import data and producer capacity rather than allocating a share of a global total.
Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: pharma, agrochemical and electronics demand grows steadily; Indian producers run harder behind trade-remedy protection and add pharma- and electronic-grade capacity.
– Constrained supply: feedstock disruptions (propylene, acrylonitrile operating rates, refinery outages) and trade-remedy decisions decide who supplies India; landed import prices and domestic list prices diverge.
– Technology transition: solvent recovery, green-solvent substitution and electronic-grade purity requirements reshape demand by grade, with high-purity material earning a growing share of value.
The swing factor for Acetonitrile is whether duty-paid imports from non-dumped origins (US, Europe, Korea) undercut Indian producers once the duty lifts Chinese prices. Signposts: Indian import data by origin, Alkyl Amines and Balaji utilisation disclosures, acrylonitrile operating rates in China, peptide API capacity additions in India.
What this report delivers
Annual volume (tonnes) and value (USD) for 2026-2035, segmented by grade: pharma/HPLC, industrial, DNA-synthesis grade; application: API synthesis, analytical, agrochemical intermediates, extraction; end user: API makers, CDMOs, agrochemical producers, laboratories; region: India, China, Russia, Taiwan, rest of Asia, Europe, North America. Each segment is backed by a producer capacity table, price benchmarks for 2020-2025 by grade and region, trade-flow analysis and a supplier risk map. Companies assessed include Alkyl Amines Chemicals, Balaji Amines, Jindal Speciality Chemicals, INEOS, Asahi Kasei, Formosa Plastics, Nantong Acetic Acid Chemical, Honeywell, Avantor. The 2036-2047 outlook uses three explicit scenarios (base, constrained supply and technology transition) rather than a single extrapolated curve.
Who uses this report
API manufacturers, CDMOs, Indian amine producers, solvent distributors and procurement teams evaluating duty-paid import versus domestic contracts.
Why our approach is evidence-based
Most CAS-level market listings publish a single number with no audit trail, and we regularly find figures that contradict their own growth rates or exceed the size of the market they sit inside. Market Krystal works the other way round. We start from physical evidence: plant capacities, production and trade data, company disclosures, regulatory texts and price records. We build volume and price separately and only then compute value. Every third-party figure is cited, every Market Krystal estimate is labelled with its method and a confidence grade, and conflicts between sources are shown rather than hidden. Confidence grades: A = two or more independent sources agree, or government or company data; B = one published estimate checked against volumes or prices; C = no reliable published figure, so the range is built from stated assumptions and narrowed in the full report.
Methodology and delivery
Prepared by the Market Krystal Chemicals Research Team. Each report is built around the buyer’s question: after purchase, a short scope confirmation fixes the priority regions, companies and applications, and the report is delivered within 5-7 business days with the Excel model behind every estimate, so buyers can audit and change the assumptions.
The purchased delivery includes the PDF report, Excel datasets and customization around the buyer’s priority region, company set, application or commercial question.
What this research answers
The study connects production routes, named suppliers, applications, regional demand, trade, pricing drivers and commercial opportunities for this CAS number. Detailed estimates and company analysis remain inside the purchased report.
