Cyanocobalamin is the stable, industrially produced form of vitamin B12, and it sits behind some of the most routine products in medicine and nutrition. DSM-Firmenich’s technical sheet describes it as the principal supplement form, sold as injections, a nasal gel for pernicious anaemia, tablets and oral liquids. The US food rule recognises vitamin B12 as cyanocobalamin and permits its food use subject to good manufacturing practice. The commercial tension is that demand is steady and clinical, while the supply base is shifting. The one Western pharmaceutical-grade producer has just retreated from a planned expansion, and new feed-additive applicants are entering the EU through regulatory channels.

The molecule cannot be made cheaply by classical chemistry, so it comes from fermentation. A US patent describes industrial production using almost exclusively Pseudomonas denitrificans and Propionibacterium. The natural vitamin is then converted to cyanocobalamin by cyanidation, followed by solvent extraction and purification. EU feed dossiers describe a newer variant: a non-GMO Ensifer adhaerens strain is fermented and then reacted with sodium cyanide, giving a product of at least 96% purity. Market Krystal’s reading is that feedstock exposure is spread across fermentation nutrients, cobalt, cyanide reagent and utilities. Process efficiency, meaning yield, water use and waste, probably matters more to cost than any single raw material. EUROAPI’s planned process was designed to be nitrite-free, to cut water use by about half and to reduce the number of steps. Company-level feedstock volumes and prices are not disclosed in the sources reviewed.

In Europe the story centres on Saint-Aubin-lès-Elbeuf. EUROAPI says it has fermented vitamin B12 there since 1966 and calls itself the sole Western pharmaceutical B12 manufacturer. In January 2023 its board approved a €40 million investment, backed by €7.9 million of public support, aimed at a 60% production increase. It named DSM and P&G Health among the customers served from the plant. A later FOCUS-27 plan still listed B12 capacity at Elbeuf among its priorities. In March 2026, however, EUROAPI reported a €77.8 million impairment tied to discontinuing the Elbeuf B12 project. It cited lower economic potential in an increasingly price-competitive environment, and said B12 sales were flat. The release describes the project, not the plant, as discontinued. Market Krystal interprets this as Western B12 supply persisting on existing assets, with little prospect of a European capacity step-up. That sharpens the resilience-versus-price debate for buyers.

Asian producers are visible mainly through EU feed-additive authorisations. EFSA assessed a cyanocobalamin from Hebei Huarong Pharmaceutical, submitted through CSPC Dermay Europe GmbH, made with Ensifer adhaerens CGMCC 19596, and found no viable cells or production-strain DNA in the additive. It has also assessed an Ensifer-derived product from NHU Europe GmbH, formulated at about 1% cyanocobalamin on a carrier such as corn starch. An Orffa Additives B.V. dossier appears in the 2026 EFSA literature, and a further Ensifer adhaerens CICC 11008s application was listed by the EU’s Joint Research Centre in late 2025. Earlier EFSA scrutiny of one Ensifer strain flagged high endotoxin content and user-exposure concerns, which shows that regulatory quality is a real gatekeeper. Chinese corporate links beyond what these filings state are not confirmed here.

Downstream demand is pharmaceutical first. In the US, generic injectables are the visible channel: Accord added cyanocobalamin injection in 2022, and Meitheal launched a 1000 mcg/mL multi-dose vial. Hikma’s DailyMed label lists a Portuguese manufacturing site and a US distribution arm. Nascobal nasal spray is made by Nastech for QOL Medical, which holds commercialisation rights. On the ingredient side, dsm-firmenich markets vitamin B12 as sourced from multiple suppliers, and says most raw materials come from Europe. Univar lists dsm-firmenich B12 in FCC and USP grades, and trade press reports a Brenntag partnership covering Biond cyanocobalamin for biologics cell-culture media. EUROAPI also positions its B12 for vegetarian diets and animal health.

Regionally, Market Krystal sees Europe as a policy story. EUROAPI is one of the companies notified under the Med4Cure pharmaceutical IPCEI, although that programme is not B12-specific. North America is largely a finished-dose generics and supplement market, and the API sourcing behind it is not evidenced here. Asia-Pacific, especially China, appears to be the centre of fermentation cost competitiveness. CSPC’s annual results show a cobalamin-related injection pipeline, but they do not separately report B12 bulk sales. Risks include price pressure, regulatory dossier outcomes, single-site concentration and the sustainability of Western supply. The forward outlook turns on whether European policy or customer resilience requirements can support non-Asian supply, or whether price-led sourcing continues to dominate.

Important gaps remain. Official sources retrieved do not give plant-level capacity, prices, trade flows, or confirmation of dsm-firmenich’s own B12 production sites. They also do not confirm whether Polifar produces or only trades the material. Those items would need primary buyer and producer interviews.

Key findings from the research

  • EUROAPI's Saint-Aubin-lès-Elbeuf site is its only B12 production location and the company calls itself the sole Western pharmaceutical B12 manufacturer, so Western supply depends on a single plant.
  • A €40 million, 60%-uplift B12 expansion announced in 2023 was later discontinued. EUROAPI booked a €77.8 million impairment citing a price-competitive environment, and reported flat B12 sales.
  • Several Ensifer adhaerens-based cyanocobalamin feed additives have been assessed or listed in the EU, including applicants Hebei Huarong (via CSPC Dermay Europe), NHU Europe GmbH and Orffa Additives B.V. This points to growing applicant diversity in the feed channel.
  • Finished-dose demand is visible in US generic injectables (Accord, Meitheal, Hikma) and in Nascobal nasal spray, while ingredient distribution runs through Univar and, per trade press, Brenntag for cell-culture grades.
  • Feed dossiers describe a fermentation-plus-sodium-cyanide route, with premix inclusion levels of 10 to 80 µg/kg compound feed, which links cyanocobalamin demand directly to animal-nutrition formulation.

What this research is designed to answer

  • How exposed is Western cyanocobalamin supply after EUROAPI discontinued its planned Elbeuf B12 expansion, and what does that mean for supplier qualification?
  • Which Asian-linked producers and applicants (such as Hebei Huarong, NHU Europe and Orffa Additives) are entering regulated EU feed channels, and how do their authorisation positions compare?
  • What fermentation strains, cyanide conversion steps and feedstock inputs drive cost and quality differences between cyanocobalamin sources?
  • Which finished-dose companies and distributors (Accord, Meitheal, Hikma, QOL Medical, Univar, Brenntag) anchor downstream demand, and how concentrated is that channel?
  • What regulatory and quality hurdles, from the US food-use rule to EFSA user-safety and endotoxin findings, most affect market access?
  • Which evidence gaps (capacity, pricing, trade flows, dsm-firmenich's own production) must buyers and investors close through primary research before committing capital or contracts?
