Description
Ethylene (cracker olefin)Market Outlook, 2026-2035 forecast; 2036-2047 scenarios
Ethylene (CAS 74-85-1) market report: size, cracker capacity, closures, prices and forecasts to 2035 for buyers, producers and investors. By Market Krystal.
Market overview
Ethylene is the simplest olefin and the largest-volume organic building block in the chemical industry. Most of it goes into polyethylene, with the rest feeding ethylene oxide and glycols, vinyl chloride and styrene. Supply comes mainly from steam crackers running on ethane, LPG or naphtha, so cracker economics, feedstock access and plant closures set availability.
The question this report answers
How will cracker closures, new ethane capacity and feedstock costs reshape ethylene supply, pricing and sourcing risk through 2035?
Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
ChemAnalyst, IMARC, Research and Markets and Market Research Future publish USD 151-176 bn for 2025. Six other publishers sit at USD 205-234 bn. Published CAGRs span 5.2-8.7%. Market Krystal sizes the 2025 market as roughly 190-200 Mt of output, set by about 244 Mt of capacity (Nomura) running at 82-84% (Wood Mackenzie), times a global average price of USD 0.80-0.95/kg (Expert Market Research, Intratec). That gives USD 150-190 bn, which sits on the lower cluster of published estimates; the check is indicative because price data are regional averages. On this basis we use USD 150-190 bn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.
Market dynamics
– Demand: Polyethylene takes 49.3% of application demand (Market Research Future); S&P Global Commodity Insights sees demand adding about 5-6 Mt a year, with Asia the growth centre.
– Supply: Main producers are Sinopec, ExxonMobil, SABIC, Dow, PetroChina, LyondellBasell (Market Research Future) and Chevron Phillips Chemical; China took about 70% of 2020-2025 capacity additions (Wood Mackenzie).
– Price and margin: Prices are split by feedstock: Europe about USD 1.13/kg versus North America USD 0.52/kg in Q1 2026 (Expert Market Research); by September 2026 Europe reached USD 1.5/kg and Northeast Asia USD 1.05/kg (IMARC).
– Regulation and substitution: Capacity rationalisation is policy- and margin-led, while bio-ethylene from ethanol (Braskem, Topsoe) and ammonia-fired furnaces (Mitsui Chemicals) are early low-carbon routes rather than volume substitutes.

What this means for the market
Ethylene is a long market that closures are slowly tightening, so Europe and high-cost Asian buyers face a thinner local supply base as plants shut. Ethane-based producers in the US and Middle East hold the cost advantage while oil-linked naphtha prices set the global marginal price. Contract buyers should expect volatility from Gulf logistics and project delays, and should weigh derivative imports against local ethylene. Investors in bio-based or low-carbon routes face a premium niche, not a volume shift, over this decade.
How published estimates compare
Published estimates for 2025 range from USD 151 bn to USD 234 bn, partly because publishers mix scope: some size ethylene alone, others add petrochemical derivatives. Several also value captive output at market prices. Market Krystal builds from capacity, operating rates and a volume-weighted global price, which lands in the lower cluster and treats the higher figures as broader scope.
Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Closures of 5-6% of capacity already announced and more in Europe and Asia lift operating rates towards mid-cycle by around 2030. Demand grows steadily with polyethylene, and ethane-based capacity in North America and the Gulf wins share.
– Constrained supply: Gulf start-up delays, feedstock disruption and deeper closures in Europe and China tighten supply, leaving naphtha-based regions short and spot prices spiking. Contract premiums rise for buyers without integrated supply.
– Technology transition: Bio-ethylene, ethanol-to-ethylene, ammonia or electric furnaces and recycled feedstock gain scale from the 2030s, so low-carbon ethylene sells at a premium alongside conventional output. Carbon cost then decides which crackers remain competitive.
The swing factor for ethylene is Pace of Chinese and European cracker closures against new Gulf and US capacity. Signposts: Cracker closure announcements, global operating rates, Brent-to-ethane spread, Project ONE and Golden Triangle ramp-up, Ras Laffan and Borouge start-ups, Strait of Hormuz shipping, bio-ethylene and ammonia furnace commercial rollouts.
