Description
LaurolactamMarket Outlook, 2026-2035 forecast; 2036-2047 scenarios
Evidence-led market analysis connecting supply, demand, pricing, trade, participants and commercial opportunities.
Market overview
Laurolactam (CAS 947-04-6) is the monomer for polyamide 12 (PA12), a high-performance nylon used in automotive fuel and brake lines, offshore and gas pipes, medical tubing, sports goods and, increasingly, powder-bed 3D printing. It is made from butadiene via cyclododecatriene in a long, complex process, so very few companies produce it. Evonik, with its Marl complex, is the leading producer.
The question this report answers
How much laurolactam does PA12 need as 3D printing, automotive lines and fuel cells grow, and how concentrated is supply?
Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
No published size. Assuming 120-180 kt at USD 3,000-5,000/t, we estimate USD 0.4-0.9 bn (largely captive). Confidence grade C: no reliable published figure; range built from the stated assumptions and narrowed in the full report.
Market dynamics
– Demand: PA12 for automotive fuel and brake lines, 3D printing powders, cables, sporting goods
– Supply: Evonik (Marl) and very few others; large captive share
– Price and margin: butadiene-based cost; specialty pricing
– Regulation: concentration risk shown by past PA12 shortages
Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– Evonik invested EUR 400 mn in a new PA12 complex at Marl, raising its PA12 capacity by more than 50%; first plant completed October 2020 (ChemXplore)
– No reliable standalone market size is published for laurolactam; the report sizes it from PA12 production
Recent developments among key stakeholders
– Sep-Oct 2026: BASF made a non-binding offer for Evonik valued at about EUR 10.3 bn (about EUR 22 per share); Evonik rejected it as too low, BASF may raise it and is courting RAG-Stiftung (about 43% holder); on 22 Oct 2026 BASF pledged no operational dismissals until 2032 in a combination (PlasticsToday)
– 2020-2021: Evonik completed its EUR 400 mn PA12 complex at Marl, raising PA12 capacity by more than 50% (ChemXplore)
What this means for the market
A BASF-Evonik combination would put this product under new ownership or into an antitrust remedy sale. Bidders, banks, competitors and customers all need an independent, product-level view of capacity, share and pricing now.
How published estimates compare
Because almost all laurolactam is used captively to make PA12, merchant-market estimates are rare and unreliable. Market Krystal derives laurolactam demand from PA12 output by end use and maps the very short list of producers.
Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: plastics and compounds grow with packaging, automotive, electrical and construction demand; additive volumes follow polymer output.
– Constrained supply: Chinese additive producers dominate volume, so trade measures or plant closures cause regional shortages.
– Technology transition: halogen-free, phthalate-free and recycling-compatible additives take share as regulations and brand targets tighten.
The swing factor for Laurolactam is PA12 demand in 3D printing and automotive lines. Signposts: REACH restrictions, recycling mandates, EV and electronics FR standards, anti-dumping cases.
What this report delivers
Annual volume (tonnes) and value (USD) for 2026-2035, segmented by use: captive PA12 polymerisation vs. merchant sales; pA12 application: automotive lines, oil and gas pipes, 3D printing powders, medical, sports and consumer; region: Europe, Asia, North America. Each segment is backed by a producer capacity table, price benchmarks for 2020-2025 by grade and region, trade-flow analysis and a supplier risk map. Companies assessed include Evonik, Arkema, UBE, EMS-Chemie, Chinese emerging producers. The 2036-2047 outlook uses three explicit scenarios (base, constrained supply and technology transition) rather than a single extrapolated curve.
Who uses this report
Automotive suppliers, 3D printing companies, polyamide producers and investors.
Why our approach is evidence-based
Most CAS-level market listings publish a single number with no audit trail, and we regularly find figures that contradict their own growth rates or exceed the size of the market they sit inside. Market Krystal works the other way round. We start from physical evidence: plant capacities, production and trade data, company disclosures, regulatory texts and price records. We build volume and price separately and only then compute value. Every third-party figure is cited, every Market Krystal estimate is labelled with its method and a confidence grade, and conflicts between sources are shown rather than hidden. Confidence grades: A = two or more independent sources agree, or government or company data; B = one published estimate checked against volumes or prices; C = no reliable published figure, so the range is built from stated assumptions and narrowed in the full report.
Methodology and delivery
Prepared by the Market Krystal Chemicals Research Team. Each report is built around the buyer’s question: after purchase, a short scope confirmation fixes the priority regions, companies and applications, and the report is delivered within 5-7 business days with the Excel model behind every estimate, so buyers can audit and change the assumptions.
The purchased delivery includes the PDF report, Excel datasets and customization around the buyer’s priority region, company set, application or commercial question.
What this research answers
The study connects production routes, named suppliers, applications, regional demand, trade, pricing drivers and commercial opportunities for this CAS number. Detailed estimates and company analysis remain inside the purchased report.
