Market overview

Nitrogen is an inert, colourless gas that makes up most of the air. Industry uses it for inerting, purging, cryogenic freezing, metal processing and ultra-high-purity semiconductor manufacturing. Supply comes from air separation units (ASUs) and on-site generators, run mainly by a few global gas groups. Power cost, plant location and long-term contracts shape availability and price.

The question this report answers
How big is the nitrogen market, who supplies it, and how will demand, pricing and supply contracts move through 2035?

Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Industrial-nitrogen estimates cluster at USD 19.9-28.4 bn for 2025 (Verified Market Research, Market Research Future, Dataintelo and others). Broad-scope publishers reach USD 42.7-47.4 bn. Liquid-only estimates run USD 18.7-23.9 bn. Market Krystal's range sits on the scope-matched cluster of industrial and liquid nitrogen estimates and excludes the broadest scopes, which add services and equipment. It is checked for plausibility against total industrial gases revenue of USD 119.1 bn in 2025 (Grand View Research) and against indicative bulk nitrogen prices from Procurement Resource, so the check is partial. On this basis we use USD 22-30 bn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.

Market dynamics
– Demand: Inerting and blanketing, pharma and biotech, and semiconductor fabrication drive demand growth (GM Insights). Electronics is the fastest-growing end market: Air Liquide's Electronics revenue rose 9.3% in H1 2026 (Air Liquide).
– Supply: Linde, Air Liquide, Air Products, Messer and Taiyo Nippon Sanso lead supply through ASU networks, pipelines and on-site plants (GM Insights; Mordor Intelligence). The top five ASU players hold about 45% of that market (GM Insights). New ASUs are being built for steel, ammonia and chips.
– Price and margin: Prices are stable and driven by power cost and contract terms. Bulk nitrogen was USD 123.60/MT FOB USA and USD 138.18/MT FOB Germany in June 2026; China was USD 120.95/MT CIF (Procurement Resource). Merchant pricing is firm: Air Liquide reported a +5.0% price effect in Americas Industrial Merchant in Q1 2026 (Air Liquide).
– Regulation and substitution: Nitrogen has few substitutes in inerting and cryogenic freezing; argon and CO2 are niche alternatives. Separate NOx rules shape nitrogen-oxide control, not nitrogen supply: IMO Tier III limits apply in Emission Control Areas (Umicore). ASU power use and carbon cost shape plant economics.

Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)

– Jul 2026: Linde reported Q2 2026 sales of USD 9.3 bn and a record sale-of-gas backlog of USD 8.1 bn after signing another long-term US electronics supply contract (Linde)
– Jul 2026: Air Liquide announced over USD 150 mn for a new Idaho plant supplying ultra-pure nitrogen, oxygen and argon to a global memory chip leader, with start-up scheduled for 2028 (Air Liquide)
– Jul 2026: Air Liquide committed over USD 170 mn to two production units in Indiana supplying nitrogen, oxygen, argon and hydrogen to SK hynix's first US fab, with commissioning at the end of 2028 (Air Liquide)
– Jun 2026: Air Products announced a long-term agreement to build four large ASUs and pipelines for a semiconductor manufacturer's expansion in Taiwan. It also said it would not proceed with the Louisiana Clean Energy Complex, which had been tied to hydrogen and nitrogen offtake (Air Products)
– Apr 2026: Air Liquide announced a USD 350 mn ASU in Louisiana to supply oxygen, nitrogen and argon to Hyundai-POSCO's low-carbon steel plant, with start-up expected in 2028 (gasworld)

What this means for the market
Nitrogen supply is being added where long-term contracts exist, mainly semiconductor fabs, steel and low-carbon ammonia. Buyers in electronics should expect tight, contract-led supply and long lead times for new on-site capacity. Merchant buyers in industrial and food sectors face steady pricing, with price rises from suppliers more likely than falls. Producers with ASU networks near growth hubs gain most, while sites far from pipelines or liquid hubs carry higher delivered cost.

How published estimates compare
Publishers differ mainly on scope. Some size the gas alone, some add liquid and on-site services, and Mordor Intelligence sizes liquid nitrogen in volume rather than value. This is why published values for 2025 span USD 18.7 bn to USD 47.4 bn. Market Krystal sets its range from scope-matched estimates and tests it against company gas revenues and bulk prices.

Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Demand grows steadily to 2047, led by electronics, pharma and food, with industrial volumes tracking GDP. Published value growth rates range from 4.25% (Market Research Future) to 7.8% (SNS Insider). Long-term contracts keep on-site additions steady, and merchant prices rise modestly with power costs.
– Constrained supply: Higher power prices, ASU equipment delays or cancelled anchor projects slow capacity additions. Regional merchant shortages and tight cryogenic tanker supply lift delivered prices, most in the US Southeast, Europe and fast-growing Asian chip hubs. Air Products' exit from the Louisiana complex shows how anchor-project risk can remove planned demand (Air Products).
– Technology transition: On-site PSA and membrane generators take share from delivered liquid in mid-purity uses. Low-carbon ammonia, green steel and chip fabs push large dedicated ASUs and renewable power contracts. Energy-efficient ASU designs lower unit cost, and ultra-high-purity grades earn a growing premium.
The swing factor for nitrogen is Power cost and semiconductor build-out pace. Signposts: Linde and Air Liquide backlog changes, new ASU start-ups, semiconductor fab capex, industrial power prices, Procurement Resource and ChemAnalyst nitrogen price indices, low-carbon ammonia final investment decisions, cryogenic tanker availability.
