Market overview

Oxygen is a colourless, non-flammable gas and a strong oxidiser. It is separated from air, mostly by cryogenic distillation in air separation units, and sold as a gas, a liquid or on-site pipeline supply. It is used in steelmaking, chemicals, glass, healthcare, semiconductors and rocket launch. Supply depends on cheap power, ASU capacity near the customer and long-term take-or-pay contracts held by a few global gas groups.

The question this report answers
How large is the global oxygen market, who supplies it, and where will demand and pricing move through 2035?

Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Industrial-oxygen publishers cluster at USD 64-83 bn for 2025 (Market Research Future, SkyQuest, SNS Insider, Future Market Insights). Broader oxygen estimates run USD 29-53 bn (Business Research Company, Business Research Insights). Reportprime publishes USD 11 bn; medical-only reports sit at USD 3-10 bn. Market Krystal sets the range top-down from published industrial gases revenue of USD 115-119 bn for 2025 (Fortune Business Insights, Grand View Research) and published oxygen shares of 29.8-38.5% of that total (Fortune Business Insights, Grand View Research). Price checks from IMARC and Expert Market Research put bulk oxygen at roughly USD 145-385 per tonne in Q2 2026. Product-specific estimates diverge widely, so the check is indicative. On this basis we use USD 34-46 bn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.

Market dynamics
– Demand: Steel is the largest end use at a 39.13% share (Market.us); chip fabs, medical and space launch are the growth pockets (Air Liquide, Linde).
– Supply: Linde, Air Liquide and Air Products control about 55% of industrial gases revenue (Market Research Future); Nippon Sanso, Messer, SOL and Iwatani follow, with Chinese and Indian regionals.
– Price and margin: Q2 2026 bulk prices were USD 263/t in the US and USD 366/t in China (IMARC), but USD 255/t in the US and USD 145/t in China (Expert Market Research); power cost drives margin and contracts pass it through (Air Products).
– Regulation and substitution: Medical oxygen is held to pharmacopoeia and device-style rules; on-site VPSA and PSA units and concentrators substitute for delivered liquid, and 20-plus medical VPSA units were commissioned in 2024 (Mordor Intelligence).

Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– Industrial oxygen valued at USD 71.45 bn in 2025E, growing at 6.73% a year to 2035 (SNS Insider)
– Oxygen holds 29.8% of industrial gases in 2026, within a USD 115.47 bn market in 2025 (Fortune Business Insights)
– Oxygen accounted for 38.5% of industrial gases revenue in 2025, in a USD 119.1 bn market (Grand View Research)
– Steel holds a 39.13% share of oxygen demand by end use in 2025 (Market.us)
– Linde's oxygen capacity in the Kalinganagar region of India exceeds 7,000 tons per day after the Tata Steel ASU acquisition (Linde)
– Air Liquide reported H1 2026 revenue of nearly EUR 14 bn and a EUR 6 bn investment backlog (Air Liquide)

Recent developments among key stakeholders
– Oct 2026: Linde doubled its on-site capacity for Tata Steel at Kalinganagar, India, by taking over two ASUs that supply oxygen, nitrogen and argon. The additional capacity supports a rise in steel output from three to eight million tons a year (Linde)
– Oct 2026: Air Liquide unveiled its BEYOND plan to 2030: sales growth of 5% a year (+/-1%) and industrial investment decisions of about EUR 24 bn (Air Liquide)
– Sep 2026: Air Liquide committed over EUR 170 mn to build, own and operate units supplying ultra-pure nitrogen, oxygen, argon and hydrogen to a leading chipmaker in Japan (Air Liquide)
– Jul 2026: Linde will invest USD 1 bn to add two SPECTRA ASUs at its Phoenix, Arizona complex, supplying ultra-high-purity nitrogen, oxygen and argon to two new semiconductor fabs (Linde)
– Jul 2026: Air Liquide announced over USD 150 mn for a new Idaho unit for a memory chip leader (start-up 2028). It also announced over USD 170 mn for two Indiana units serving SK hynix (commissioning end-2028) (Air Liquide)
– Mar 2026: Linde said it will build ASUs in Oshkosh, Wisconsin (start-up second half of 2028) and Garysburg, North Carolina (end of 2028). Both will produce liquid oxygen, nitrogen and argon (Linde)

What this means for the market
Merchant liquid oxygen is moving toward regional ASU build-outs, while large volumes go to on-site contracts for steel and chip fabs. Steelmakers and fab operators that sign long-term supply deals secure capacity but carry power-cost pass-through. Buyers of liquid and cylinder oxygen face firmer offers in the US and softer quotes in parts of Asia. Regional price gaps are wide, so regional benchmarks matter more than a single global figure.

How published estimates compare
Publishers differ mainly on scope. Industrial-oxygen reports sit at USD 64-83 bn for 2025, broader oxygen reports at USD 29-53 bn, and medical-only reports at USD 3-10 bn. Growth rates run from 4% to 11.6%. Market Krystal sets its range from published industrial gases revenue and oxygen's published share of it, then checks it against regional price data.

Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Oxygen demand grows steadily to 2047, led by Asia, on-site supply to chip fabs and iron and steel capacity additions, with the big three gas groups keeping share through long-term contracts.
– Constrained supply: Higher power prices, ASU project delays or an equipment bottleneck tighten merchant liquid oxygen, lifting regional prices and favouring buyers with contracted on-site supply.
– Technology transition: Wider use of electric arc furnaces, direct reduced iron and hydrogen routes changes the mix of steel oxygen demand, and on-site VPSA units erode delivered liquid volumes.
The swing factor for oxygen is Steel route mix (blast furnace versus electric arc and DRI) and industrial power cost. Signposts: Crude steel output by route, industrial electricity prices, new ASU start-ups and on-site contract awards, semiconductor fab construction, regional liquid oxygen quotes, medical oxygen policy in emerging markets.
