Market overview

Polyethylene is the world's most widely used plastic. It is made by polymerising ethylene and sold as HDPE, LDPE and LLDPE grades. It goes into packaging film, bottles, pipe, cable and agricultural film. Supply follows the ethylene chain: ethane in the US and Middle East, naphtha in Europe and much of Asia, and coal or imported ethane in parts of China.

The question this report answers
How much is the polyethylene market worth, and will the 2026 Gulf supply shock and China's new capacity push prices up or down for buyers over the next decade?

Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Published 2025 estimates span USD 100.7-166.5 bn. Three cluster at USD 118-125 bn (Research Nester, Fortune Business Insights, Emergen); the rest sit above or below. Stated CAGRs are 4.1-5.5%. Market Krystal's range multiplies a 2025 global resin volume by a blended price of roughly USD 1,000-1,150/t. Volume is built from Mordor Intelligence's HDPE and LDPE tonnages plus an LLDPE allowance. Price is anchored on Platts Asia assessments and European contract prices. The check is indicative because no single audited global volume series was used. On this basis we use USD 118-135 bn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.

Market dynamics
– Demand: Packaging is the anchor: Research Nester puts packaging at 45.4% of demand, and Dow says polyethylene volumes stayed resilient in Q3 2026 outside supply-constrained regions.
– Supply: Dow, ExxonMobil, LyondellBasell, SABIC, INEOS, Chevron Phillips Chemical, TotalEnergies, Borealis and Braskem lead outside China; Sinopec, PetroChina and BASF's Zhanjiang site add large Chinese volumes.
– Price and margin: Prices jumped after the Hormuz closure in late February 2026; Dow reported polyethylene prices up more than 40% since then (Dow CFO, via Hydrocarbon Processing). Dow's Q3 2026 packaging EBIT rose on higher integrated margins (Dow).
– Regulation and substitution: Recycled-content and bio-based grades are growing (Braskem, Chevron Phillips Chemical); PET and polypropylene are the main substitutes in packaging (Fortune Business Insights).

Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– Global polyethylene market estimated at USD 166.5 bn in 2025, rising to USD 229.7 bn by 2033 at a 4.1% CAGR; HDPE held 49.5% of the 2025 market (Grand View Research)
– Asia Pacific held 48.30% of the polyethylene market in 2025, valued at USD 57.8 bn (Fortune Business Insights)
– Middle East supplied more than 40% of global polyethylene exports last year; the Hormuz closure took nearly 20% of global ethylene capacity offline (S&P Global Market Intelligence, via Hydrocarbon Processing)
– Dow Q3 2026: Packaging & Specialty Plastics net sales USD 5.8 bn, up 18%; local price up 17% year on year; polyethylene prices higher in all regions (Dow)
– China's new polyethylene capacity in 2026 projected at 6.15-7.29 Mt, lifting total capacity above 45 Mt a year (Blooming / SunSirs)
– Renewable ethylene plant at Triunfo has 275,000 t/y capacity, 37% above original projection, supplying bio-based polyethylene, EVA and wax (Braskem)

Recent developments among key stakeholders
– Oct 2026: Dow reported Q3 2026 net sales of USD 11.3 bn, up 13%, led by higher polyethylene prices in all regions. Management flagged October and November price nominations of USD 0.07/lb and USD 0.05/lb (Dow)
– Oct 2026: Chevron Phillips Chemical detailed its advanced-recycling route to circular polyethylene (Marlex Anew, first introduced in 2022) and its stakes in two circular plastics funds (Chevron Phillips Chemical)
– Sep 2026: Braskem marked 16 years of its Triunfo renewable ethylene plant: more than 4.6 million t of CO2 removed, 275,000 t/y capacity, and I'm greenT grades sold in over 40 countries (Braskem)
– Aug 2026: Braskem supplied about 69 t of fossil-based, renewable and recycled polyethylene and other resins for live machinery demonstrations at Interplast 2026 in Joinville (Braskem)
– Mar 2026: After the Strait of Hormuz closed, one major Gulf polyethylene supplier declared force majeure and export prices to India and Pakistan rose by more than USD 200/t (ICIS)
– Jan 2026: BASF started a 500,000 t/y polyethylene unit at its Zhanjiang Verbund site in China (Blooming / SunSirs)

What this means for the market
Buyers face a two-speed market. Gulf-linked supply into Asia, Europe and Africa is exposed to shipping risk, while US producers such as Dow are capturing the premium. China's large 2026 capacity additions point to softer prices once Gulf flows normalise. Converters should split contracts between Gulf, US and Chinese origins and tie renewals to feedstock indices. Investors should watch integrated margins, which have recovered at Dow.

How published estimates compare
Publishers differ mainly on scope and base year. Grand View's USD 166.5 bn sits far above Research Nester, Fortune Business Insights and Emergen, who publish USD 117.8-124.8 bn. Most public pages do not describe their method. Market Krystal builds a volume-times-price range and checks it against Platts and European price data, which is why its range sits near the lower cluster.

Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Gulf flows normalise gradually, China's capacity wave keeps Asian margins thin, and the US stays a swing exporter. Demand grows broadly in line with GDP and packaging. Prices ease from 2026 peaks but stay above 2025 lows into 2027.
– Constrained supply: Renewed Hormuz disruption or delays at Middle East projects keep Gulf exports curtailed. Europe and Asia stay short, US exporters gain, and spot prices spike again. Converters see allocation and longer lead times.
– Technology transition: Recycled and bio-based grades scale as brand owners and regulators push recycled content. Metallocene and downgauged film cut tonnage per pack. Chemical recycling and renewable ethylene move from niche to a visible premium segment by the 2030s.
The swing factor for polyethylene is Strait of Hormuz shipping status and the pace of Chinese plant start-ups. Signposts: Hormuz transit volumes, Gulf force-majeure notices, Chinese PE start-ups and export volumes, US ethane and Asian naphtha costs, Dow and LyondellBasell price nominations, recycled-content rules, Chinese plant closures.
