Description
Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)Market Outlook, 2026-2035 forecast; 2036-2047 scenarios
PET market size, producers, prices and PPWR impact: published estimates range USD 30-58 bn for 2025. Market Krystal range, forecasts to 2035 and scenarios.
Market overview
PET is a thermoplastic polyester made from purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and monoethylene glycol (MEG). It is the main resin for beverage bottles and food trays, and it is also used in polyester fibre, film and technical compounds. Supply follows the paraxylene-PTA-PET chain, which is concentrated in China and runs alongside a fast-growing recycled PET stream.
The question this report answers
How large is the PET market, and where will price, margin and recycled-content rules push buyers and producers over the next decade?
Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Nine publishers cluster at USD 35-43 bn for 2025 (Grand View, Research Nester, Expert Market Research, Market Research Future); two publish USD 52-58 bn and one USD 30.6 bn. Market Krystal multiplies Mordor Intelligence's 2025 volume of 31.34 million tons by an indicative price band of USD 1,115-1,340 per ton. That band sits inside the regional price points reported by IMARC for 2026. The result matches the middle cluster of published estimates, but the 2025 price band is indicative because no full-year benchmark series was available. On this basis we use USD 35-42 bn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.
Market dynamics
– Demand: Packaging takes about 91% of demand (Market Research Future), and Asia-Pacific holds about 56% of value (Market Research Future). Recycled PET is growing fastest, at 8.02% a year to 2031 (Mordor Intelligence).
– Supply: Indorama Ventures is the largest producer, with about six million tons a year of PET capacity at end-2024 (Indorama Ventures). Mordor Intelligence also names Sinopec, Alpek, Far Eastern New Century and SABIC as major players.
– Price and margin: Chinese integrated PET reference margins averaged USD 307/ton in Q2 2026 and USD 213/ton in Q3 2026 (Alpek). IMARC puts September 2026 prices at USD 1.17/kg in Northeast Asia, USD 1.33/kg in Europe and USD 0.98/kg in Southeast Asia.
– Regulation and substitution: The EU PPWR has applied since 12 August 2026, and from 2030 it requires 30% recycled content in single-use PET beverage bottles and 30% in contact-sensitive PET packaging (Regulation (EU) 2025/40). The food-grade rPET pool is contested, and bottles absorb the material first (Projet Celsius). Lightweighting and other polymers remain the main substitution risks.
Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– Volume was 31.34 million tons in 2025 and is put at 32.67 million tons in 2026, rising to 40.17 million tons by 2031 at 4.23% a year. (Mordor Intelligence)
– The market was valued at USD 41.5 bn in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 63.3 bn by 2033, a CAGR of 5.4% from 2026. (Grand View Research)
– Virgin PET held 80.4% of the 2025 market, and Asia-Pacific held 56.4%. (Market Research Future)
– Indorama Ventures was the world's largest PET resin producer at end-2024, with installed capacity of around six million tons a year. (Indorama Ventures)
– Alpek's Q3 2026 volume was 1.17 million tons, and it has cut installed capacity by 15% since 2023 while holding volumes similar. (Alpek)
– Q2 2026 PET resin prices were USD 953/MT in China, USD 1,156/MT in the USA and USD 1,427/MT in Germany. (IMARC)
Recent developments among key stakeholders
– Oct 2026: Alpek raised its 2026 comparable EBITDA guidance to USD 990 million. Chinese integrated PET margins averaged USD 213/ton in Q3, down 31% on the quarter. (Alpek)
– Oct 2026: Perstorp is promoting its PFAS-free Akestra polymer for heat-resistant PET food packaging as the EU PPWR starts to apply. It is said to support use up to 95°C and up to 90% recycled PET content depending on construction (Perstorp)
– Oct 2026: PTT Global Chemical reports that its GC YOUturn platform has connected more than 180 partners and over 400 collection points, with about 122,000 tonnes returned to recycling from 2020 to late 2025. Used PET bottles are processed at its ENVICCO plant into food-grade recycled pellets (PTT Global Chemical)
– Sep 2026: Avient is expanding its Polystrand continuous-fibre thermoplastic tape range to include PET and HDPE grades, shown at CAMX 2026 in Atlanta (Avient)
– Aug 2026: The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2025/40, has applied across the EU since 12 August 2026. (Perstorp)
– Jul 2026: Alpek reported Q2 volume of 1,175 ktons and Chinese PET reference margins of USD 307/ton, and raised annual EBITDA guidance to USD 750-800 million. (Alpek)
What this means for the market
Margins have moved up from late-2025 lows, but producers still describe underlying overcapacity, so buyers should treat the 2026 spread as cyclical (Alpek). Brand owners and converters selling into the EU face 30% recycled content in PET bottles and contact-sensitive PET packaging from 2030 (Regulation (EU) 2025/40). They should lock in multi-year food-grade rPET supply early, because bottles take that material first (Projet Celsius). Integrated Asian and Americas producers with recycling assets are best placed to gain from this shift.
How published estimates compare
Publishers differ on scope. Some size PET resin only, while others add film, fibre or compounding, and 2025 values range from USD 30.6 bn (Future Market Insights) to USD 57.9 bn (Fortune Business Insights). Most also forecast value growth of 3-10% a year, a wide spread. Market Krystal builds its range from volume (Mordor Intelligence) and regional price points (IMARC), so the result tracks tonnage and price rather than a publisher's chosen scope.
Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Volume grows steadily at a pace close to Mordor Intelligence's 4.2% a year to 2031 and then slows. Asia-Pacific stays the largest region. Margins normalise towards mid-cycle as China retires old plants, and recycled grades take a rising share of EU demand after 2030.
– Constrained supply: Prolonged Hormuz disruption, feedstock shortages in Asia and high freight keep PTA and MEG tight (Indorama Ventures, Alpek). Regional price gaps widen and local-for-local producers in the Americas and Europe hold higher margins. Food-grade rPET becomes scarce as EU quotas bite.
– Technology transition: Chemical and enzymatic recycling scale up and are accepted under EU mass-balance rules, which widens the supply of food-contact recycled PET. Heat-resistant and mono-material PET trays displace multi-material formats. Virgin PET demand plateaus in the EU while recycled capacity grows in Asia and Africa.
The swing factor for PET is Pace of Chinese capacity retirement versus new integrated additions. Signposts: Chinese PET reference margins, Hormuz shipping status, PTA and MEG spreads, EU delegated acts on chemical-recycled content, food-grade rPET premium over virgin, announced PET and rPET plant closures and start-ups.
