Description
Vanadium pentoxideMarket Outlook, 2026-2035 forecast; 2036-2047 scenarios
Evidence-led market analysis connecting supply, demand, pricing, trade, participants and commercial opportunities.
Market overview
Vanadium pentoxide (V2O5, CAS 1314-62-1) is the main traded form of vanadium. More than 90% of vanadium is consumed in steel alloying, but V2O5 also has two strategic chemical uses: the catalyst for converting SO2 to SO3 in sulfuric acid plants, and the starting material for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) electrolyte. Supply is concentrated in China, Russia, South Africa and Brazil, much of it from steel slag, so steel-industry dynamics drive both availability and price.
The question this report answers
Can vanadium flow batteries rescue vanadium demand while steel weakness and Chinese supply keep V2O5 prices down?
Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
USGS: 110,000 t of mined vanadium in 2025 (about 196,000 t V2O5 equivalent) at USD 5.02/lb gives about USD 2.2 bn of vanadium units. We use USD 2.0-2.4 bn. Confidence grade A: two or more independent sources agree, or the range rests on government or company data.
Market dynamics
– Demand: steel alloys (over 90% of US use), vanadium redox flow batteries growing, catalysts and chemicals
– Supply: China produced about 82,000 t of 110,000 t (2025), followed by Russia, Brazil and South Africa (USGS)
– Price and margin: V2O5 fell from USD 9.29/lb (2022) to 5.02 (2025) (USGS)
– Regulation: US 50% tariffs on many Brazilian imports (Aug 2025); critical-mineral policies in US and EU
Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– World mine production: 118,000 t of vanadium (2024) and an estimated 110,000 t (2025); China produced about 82,000 t in 2025 (USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026)
– Chinese 98% V2O5 price: USD 9.29/lb (2022), 7.50 (2023), 5.44 (2024), 5.02 (2025), down about 46% from 2022 (USGS)
– More than 90% of US reported vanadium consumption is metallurgical; VRFB installations grew worldwide in 2025 (USGS)
– US tariffs on many Brazilian imports rose to 50% in August 2025, covering high-purity vanadium but not ferrovanadium (USGS)
Recent developments among key stakeholders
– 2025: China’s vanadium consumption rose 6.1% to 125,900 t V2O5 equivalent; energy storage reached 20% of demand (from 4% in 2021) while steel fell to 70.9% (The Metalnomist, June 2026)
– 2026: China expects 4-5 GWh of VRFB installations, needing about 32,000-40,000 t V2O5, the largest source of incremental demand; Qinhuangdao Baigong completed a 10,000 t/yr V2O5 line in early 2026 (The Metalnomist)
– Nov 2025: Western Australia launched an AUD 150 mn, 50 MW/500 MWh vanadium flow battery project; CRU expects the market to move into deficit from late 2026 (Nasdaq)
– Aug 2025: US tariffs on many Brazilian imports rose to 50%, covering high-purity vanadium (USGS)
What this means for the market
Energy storage is now a fifth of Chinese vanadium demand, so V2O5 is no longer purely a steel story. The report models VRFB-driven demand against supply discipline.
How published estimates compare
Many commercial reports quote V2O5 ‘market value’ without stating the price assumption, which matters when the price fell by almost half in three years. Market Krystal reports volume (t V and t V2O5) and value under explicit price scenarios, and splits demand into steel, catalysts, VRFB electrolyte and chemicals.
Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: demand follows steel, catalysts, pigments and aerospace, with China as the main producer.
– Constrained supply: critical-mineral export controls and sanctions split markets and create Western price premiums.
– Technology transition: flow batteries, titanium for defence and new catalysts add demand; recycling grows as a supply source.
The swing factor for Vanadium pentoxide is vanadium flow battery deployment vs. steel demand. Signposts: Chinese export controls, defence budgets, flow-battery deployments, recycling capacity.
What this report delivers
Annual volume (tonnes) and value (USD) for 2026-2035, segmented by application: steel and ferroalloys, sulfuric acid catalysts, VRFB electrolyte, chemicals and pigments; source: primary ore, co-product slag, secondary (spent catalysts); grade: 98%, high-purity (99.5%+); region: China, Russia, South Africa, Brazil, Australia, North America. Each segment is backed by a producer capacity table, price benchmarks for 2020-2025 by grade and region, trade-flow analysis and a supplier risk map. Companies assessed include Pangang Group Vanadium Titanium, HBIS Chengsteel, EVRAZ, Bushveld Minerals, Largo, Glencore, AMG Vanadium. The 2036-2047 outlook uses three explicit scenarios (base, constrained supply and technology transition) rather than a single extrapolated curve.
Who uses this report
Battery developers, steel and alloy producers, mining investors and commodity traders.
Why our approach is evidence-based
Most CAS-level market listings publish a single number with no audit trail, and we regularly find figures that contradict their own growth rates or exceed the size of the market they sit inside. Market Krystal works the other way round. We start from physical evidence: plant capacities, production and trade data, company disclosures, regulatory texts and price records. We build volume and price separately and only then compute value. Every third-party figure is cited, every Market Krystal estimate is labelled with its method and a confidence grade, and conflicts between sources are shown rather than hidden. Confidence grades: A = two or more independent sources agree, or government or company data; B = one published estimate checked against volumes or prices; C = no reliable published figure, so the range is built from stated assumptions and narrowed in the full report.
Methodology and delivery
Prepared by the Market Krystal Chemicals Research Team. Each report is built around the buyer’s question: after purchase, a short scope confirmation fixes the priority regions, companies and applications, and the report is delivered within 5-7 business days with the Excel model behind every estimate, so buyers can audit and change the assumptions.
The purchased delivery includes the PDF report, Excel datasets and customization around the buyer’s priority region, company set, application or commercial question.
What this research answers
The study connects production routes, named suppliers, applications, regional demand, trade, pricing drivers and commercial opportunities for this CAS number. Detailed estimates and company analysis remain inside the purchased report.
