Market overview

Polypropylene is a light, stiff, heat-tolerant thermoplastic made by polymerising propylene. It goes into packaging film, rigid food containers, car parts, woven sacks, fibres and medical disposables. Supply follows propylene availability from steam crackers, refineries, propane dehydrogenation (PDH) and coal-based plants. It is also shaped by how fast new plants are built, above all in China.

The question this report answers
Where will polypropylene supply, price and margin settle as Chinese capacity pushes into export markets and European plants close?

Europe, Africa and Latin America remain net importers (Wood Mackenzie), and Middle East plants compete with Chinese cargoes in Southeast Asia (BCG).

3. Value chain: from feedstock to end market

Propylene + Propane (for PDH plants) + Naphtha and LPG (steam crackers) β†’ polypropylene β†’ Injection-moulded parts (rigid packaging, automotive, appliances), Film and sheet (BOPP, cast film, thermoformed), Fibre, raffia, woven sacks and nonwovens

Raw materials
– Propylene: The monomer that sets cost. In August 2026 China propylene FOB was USD 1,261.15/MT against polypropylene at USD 1,360.83/MT, a thin gap (Procurement Resource) (Procurement Resource)
– Propane (for PDH plants): About 30% of China's polypropylene comes from PDH, and almost 60% of China's propane came from the US in 2024 (Argus)
– Naphtha and LPG (steam crackers): Naphtha is the main feedstock in LyondellBasell's European crackers, which can swap up to half for LPG (LyondellBasell)
– Catalysts and process licences: Spheripol alone has more than 35 million tons of licensed capacity worldwide, so process know-how is widely available (LyondellBasell)

Production route
Propylene is polymerised with Ziegler-Natta or single-site catalysts in loop and gas-phase processes such as Spheripol and Spherizone (LyondellBasell). Propylene comes from steam crackers, refinery FCC units, PDH and coal-to-olefins plants.

Downstream
Polypropylene pellets go to compounders and converters. They make injection-moulded parts, BOPP and cast film, fibre and raffia, and pipe and profiles. Additives such as clarifiers add value at the compound stage (ADEKA).

Price, cost and margin
China FOB was USD 1,360.83/MT and USA CIF USD 1,517.00/MT in August 2026 (Procurement Resource). Margins are thin for non-integrated plants. Q1 2026 prices were USD 1.18/kg in China, USD 1.24 in the United States, USD 1.31 in India and USD 1.58 in Germany (Expert Market Research). Margin sits with low-cost, integrated propylene producers. Braskem's US and Europe polypropylene utilisation stayed at its lowest since 2010 for a second year (Braskem).

Where the chain is tightest
Propylene is the most exposed step. In Q2 2026 the US propylene price index rose 40.06% quarter on quarter and the US polypropylene index rose 59.76% on monomer tightness (ChemAnalyst).

Who sits where in the chain
– Producer and licensor: LyondellBasell
– Resin producer: Braskem, Sinopec, SABIC, Borealis
– Asset consolidator: AEQUITA
– Monomer supply: Zibo Qixiang Tengda
– Additives: ADEKA

4. Market size: what demand, supply and price add up to

Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Five publishers cluster at USD 93-103 bn for 2025 (Fortune Business Insights, SNS Insider, Market Research Future, Intel Market Research and one more). Five others publish USD 134-137 bn. Precedence is the outlier at USD 194 bn. Market Krystal multiplies published 2025 volumes of 91-97 Mt (Towards Chemicals and Materials, Expert Market Research, Mordor Intelligence) by the 2025 quarterly resin price range of USD 1.07-1.16/kg (Expert Market Research). The result is resin value only. Both inputs are publisher-derived, so the range is indicative. On this basis we use USD 98-113 bn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.

How published estimates compare
Publisher estimates for 2025 range from USD 93 bn to USD 194 bn. Most pages do not state whether they cover resin only or also compounds and converted goods. Market Krystal builds from published volumes and quarterly resin prices, so its range sits within the lower cluster.

Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– Market Research Future values the 2025 market at USD 103.4 bn, growing at a 5.10% CAGR to 2035 (Market Research Future)
– Mordor Intelligence puts 2025 volume at 97.30 Mt, rising to 134.29 Mt by 2031 (5.52% CAGR) (Mordor Intelligence)
– China's capacity was 48 Mt in 2024 and its operating rate fell to 78% (Argus)
– China's net imports fell from 6.1 Mt in 2020 to under 0.1 Mt in 2025 (ICIS)
– Braskem's US plants have 2,021 kt/yr of capacity and produced 1,545 kt in 2025. Its German plants have 625 kt/yr and produced 410 kt (Braskem Form 20-F FY2025)
– LyondellBasell is the largest North American producer, with 1.9 Mt/yr (LyondellBasell 10-K FY2025)

5. Outlook to 2035 and scenarios to 2047

Regulation and substitution
Mono-material and recycled-content packaging favours polypropylene over multilayer films. Chinese export growth invites trade-defence pressure. Biodegradable alternatives are a minor risk (Market Data Forecast).

Recent developments among key stakeholders
– Oct 2026: Close to 11 Mt/yr of European olefins, polyolefins and vinyls capacity has been closed, idled or earmarked for closure since 2024, including 965 kt/yr of polypropylene. The European Commission approved AEQUITA's acquisition of SABIC's European assets (ChemOrbis)
– Aug 2026: ADEKA will build a TRANSPAREX clarifier plant in South Korea for JPY 6.5 bn, with commercial operation planned for November 2028 (ADEKA)
– Jun 2026: LyondellBasell confirmed it will close its 260 kt/yr Brindisi polypropylene unit by end-2026 (Chemical Week)
– May 2026: China exported about 1.6 Mt of polypropylene in January-April 2026 against 1 Mt in the same months of 2025 (ICIS)
– Mar 2026: Braskem reported its 2025 results. US and Europe polypropylene utilisation was at its lowest since 2010 for a second year (Braskem)

What this means for the market
Buyers in Europe and Northeast Asia face a more import-dependent market as local plants close and Chinese cargoes fill the gap. Non-integrated producers carry the most margin risk, while PDH and low-cost integrated operators are better placed. Converters should benchmark contracts against Chinese FOB prices (Procurement Resource) and watch propylene tightness, which drove the sharp price rise in Q2 2026 (ChemAnalyst).

Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Demand grows steadily with packaging, automotive and medical use. Chinese exports stay high, European and Northeast Asian closures continue, and prices follow propylene with thin margins to 2047.
– Constrained supply: Propylene or propane disruption, as in Q2 2026, tightens supply and lifts prices and Chinese export value. Producers with their own propylene gain most.
– Technology transition: Recycled and mono-material grades, chemical recycling and bio-based routes take a growing share. Capacity shifts toward integrated sites with circular-feedstock access.
The swing factor for polypropylene is Pace of Chinese capacity rationalisation and export growth. Signposts: China net export volumes, Chinese operating rates, PDH propane supply, propylene-polypropylene spread, European closures and asset sales, recycled-content rules.
