Description
Benzenesulfonyl Chloride (BSC)Market Outlook, 2026-2035 forecast; 2036-2047 scenarios
Benzenesulfonyl chloride (BSC) market 2025: USD 45-110 mn estimate, BBSA plasticiser demand, Chinese and Indian producers, chlorosulfonic acid cost, outlook.
Market overview
BSC is a reactive aromatic sulfonyl chloride made by chlorosulfonation of benzene. It is the building block for N-butylbenzenesulfonamide (BBSA) plasticiser for polyamides, benzenesulfonamide and a range of sulfonamide drugs, agrochemicals, dyes and blowing agents. Supply depends on chlorosulfonic acid availability and on a small group of Chinese and Indian chlorosulfonation plants.
The question this report answers
How large is the BSC market, how dependent is it on BBSA plasticiser demand, and how exposed are buyers to concentrated Chinese and Indian supply?
1. Demand: who uses BSC and where it is growing
BBSA plasticiser for polyamide is the largest use, and China is the largest consuming region, followed by Europe.
Demand by application (share of 2025 consumption, Market Krystal analysis)
– BBSA plasticiser for polyamide (PA11, PA12, copolyamides): 35%
– Pharmaceutical APIs and sulfonamide intermediates: 25%
– Agrochemical intermediates: 15%
– Dye and pigment intermediates: 10%
– Other (benzenesulfonyl hydrazide, sulfinate, sulfones, reagents): 15%
No published split exists, so shares are a Market Krystal estimate based on BBSA tonnage from REACH registration bands (HSE), the USITC finding that BSC imports serve polyamide plasticiser for automotive use, and QYResearch's segment list (pesticide, pharmaceutical, dye).
Demand by region (share of 2025 consumption, Market Krystal analysis)
– China: 40%
– Europe: 20%
– North America: 15%
– India: 15%
– Rest of world: 10%
Where demand grows fastest to 2035
– Pharmaceutical APIs and sulfonamide intermediates: Expected to grow fastest to 2035 as Indian and Chinese API makers add sulfonamide and sulfonyl-based molecules (Market Krystal estimate)
– BBSA plasticiser for polyamide: Grows with PA11/PA12 tubing, fuel lines and filaments, but regulatory review of BBSA in the UK and bio-based substitutes cap growth (HSE; Emery Oleochemicals)
– Agrochemical intermediates: Tracks Chinese and Indian crop-protection output (Market Krystal estimate)
2. Supply: who makes BSC and how much
Chinese chlorosulfonation producers such as Jiaxing Jinli Chemical, Jiangsu Kangxiang and Shouguang Nuomeng lead, with India the second source (QYResearch; USITC). Global BSC output is estimated at 25,000-40,000 t a year (Market Krystal estimate), concentrated in China and India (USITC).
Main producers and capacity
– Jiaxing Jinli Chemical (China): Named among leading BSC manufacturers; capacity not published (QYResearch)
– Jiangsu Kangxiang Industrial Group (China): Named among leading BSC manufacturers; capacity not published (QYResearch)
– Shouguang Nuomeng Chemical (China): Named among leading BSC manufacturers; capacity not published (QYResearch)
– Huzhou Zhuorui Chemical Technology (China): Named among leading BSC manufacturers; capacity not published (QYResearch)
– Volant-Chem (China): Named among leading BSC manufacturers; capacity not published (QYResearch)
Production by region (share of 2025 output, Market Krystal analysis)
– China: 65%
– India: 25%
– Europe: 5%
– Rest of world: 5%
Trade and supply-demand balance
China and India export BSC, while the US has no domestic production and relies on imports from China and India for BBSA (USITC); Europe is a net importer.
3. Value chain: from feedstock to end market
Chlorosulfonic acid + Benzene + Sulfur trioxide and hydrochloric acid (for chlorosulfonic acid) → BSC → BBSA plasticiser for polyamide (PA11, PA12, copolyamides), Pharmaceutical APIs and sulfonamide intermediates, Agrochemical intermediates
Raw materials
– Chlorosulfonic acid: About 1.3-2.0 t per tonne of BSC with excess acid; the largest cash cost and a hazardous material that limits plant siting (Market Krystal estimate) (Market Krystal estimate)
– Benzene: About 0.44 t per tonne of BSC by stoichiometry; links BSC price to aromatics markets (Market Krystal estimate)
– Sulfur trioxide and hydrochloric acid (for chlorosulfonic acid): Chlorosulfonic acid is made from SO3 and HCl, as in Huaqiang Chemical's 50,000 t/yr unit in Hubei (Yichang EIA) (Huaqiang Chemical (Yichang EIA))
Production route
Benzene is reacted with excess chlorosulfonic acid, giving BSC plus HCl gas and spent sulfuric acid, followed by quench, separation and vacuum distillation.
Downstream
BSC is converted to BBSA with n-butylamine, to benzenesulfonamide with ammonia, and to sulfonamide APIs, agrochemical actives, dye intermediates and benzenesulfonyl hydrazide by fine-chemical converters.
Price, cost and margin
Price tracks benzene and chlorosulfonic acid cost; margin depends on disposing of HCl and spent sulfuric acid by-products. Margin sits with integrated producers that make their own chlorosulfonic acid and sell or reuse HCl and sulfuric acid; non-integrated plants carry waste-acid costs. The US imported about USD 6 mn a year of BSC for polyamide plasticiser at the time of its tariff suspension (USITC).
Where the chain is tightest
Chlorosulfonation capacity and waste-acid handling in China and India is the constrained step, since environmental inspections can idle plants and few Western plants remain.
Who sits where in the chain
– Bsc production: Jiaxing Jinli Chemical, Jiangsu Kangxiang Industrial Group, Shouguang Nuomeng Chemical, Huzhou Zhuorui Chemical Technology, Volant-Chem
– Feedstock: Huaqiang Chemical Group
– Derivative converter: LANXESS
– Substitute supplier: Emery Oleochemicals
4. Market size: what demand, supply and price add up to
Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Public estimates are scarce: WiseGuy Reports publishes USD 712 bn for 2024, a figure far above any plausible scope, and QYResearch leaves its value blank on the public page. Built bottom-up from 25,000-40,000 t of global BSC demand, anchored on BBSA tonnage (EU registration band 1,000-10,000 t/yr, ECHA via HSE) and about 0.85 t BSC per tonne of BBSA, then valued at a Market Krystal price assumption of USD 1.8-2.8/kg. On this basis we use USD 45-110 mn. Confidence grade C: no published estimate; built bottom-up from capacity, trade and price data.
How published estimates compare
The only public headline value, WiseGuy Reports' USD 712 bn, is several thousand times larger than any volume-based check and cannot describe BSC alone. Market Krystal builds its range from BBSA tonnage, stoichiometric BSC use and other intermediate demand, valued at a feedstock-based price.
Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– BBSA is registered under EU REACH at 1,000-10,000 t a year, and at 1,000 t a year or more in the UK (HSE)
– No US firm reported making BSC; China and India were the main import sources, with imports estimated at USD 6 mn a year (USITC)
– BSC is used mainly as a raw material for a polyamide plasticiser in automotive applications in the US (USITC)
– Huaqiang Chemical operates a 50,000 t/yr chlorosulfonic acid unit in Hubei (Yichang EIA) (Yichang government EIA)
– QYResearch names Volant-Chem, Shouguang Nuomeng, Jiaxing Jinli, Jiangsu Kangxiang and Huzhou Zhuorui as leading BSC producers (QYResearch)
5. Outlook to 2035 and scenarios to 2047
Regulation and substitution
UK REACH began a substance evaluation of BBSA in 2023 (HSE) and bio-based BBSA alternatives are in development (Emery Oleochemicals).
Recent developments among key stakeholders
– May 2026: Emery Oleochemicals said a 100% bio-based EDENOL plasticiser designed to replace BBSA in polyamide was in final application testing, citing hazard labelling on BBSA (Emery Oleochemicals)
– Oct 2023: The Agency for UK REACH opened a call for evidence for its substance evaluation of BBSA, the main downstream product of BSC, running to December 2023 (HSE)
– May 2023: HSE published its justification for adding BBSA to the UK REACH Rolling Action Plan, noting a water half-life of 858 days and EU tonnage of 1,000-10,000 t a year (HSE)
What this means for the market
BBSA makers such as LANXESS and their polyamide customers depend on a short list of Chinese and Indian BSC suppliers. Regulatory review of BBSA in the UK and bio-based substitutes could slow the largest outlet, so BSC producers should push into pharma and agro intermediates. Buyers should qualify at least one Indian and one Chinese source to reduce single-country risk.
Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: BSC demand grows about 3-4% a year to 2035 on pharma and agro intermediates, with BBSA flat to slowly rising and China and India supplying over 85% of volume to 2047.
– Constrained supply: Chinese environmental inspections or chlorosulfonic acid outages idle several plants, pushing buyers to Indian producers and lifting prices sharply for non-integrated users.
– Technology transition: Regulatory action on BBSA and bio-based plasticisers shrink the polyamide outlet, while pharma and specialty sulfonamides become the main demand base.
The swing factor for BSC is Regulatory status of BBSA in Europe. Signposts: UK REACH BBSA evaluation outcome, ECHA classification of BBSA, Chinese environmental inspection campaigns, chlorosulfonic acid prices, Indian sulfonamide API capacity, PA12 demand in automotive tubing.
