Description
Dimethyl Sulfoxide (high-purity grades)Market Outlook, 2026-2035 forecast; 2036-2047 scenarios
High-purity DMSO market: pharma and electronic grade size, producers (gChem, Xingfa, Toray), ContextLogic-gChem deal, prices, value chain and outlook to 2035.
Market overview
Dimethyl sulfoxide is a polar aprotic solvent made by oxidising dimethyl sulfide. Its high-purity grades go into drug synthesis, injectable and cell-therapy formulations, and photoresist stripping in semiconductor and display fabs. Supply is set by a handful of integrated producers in China, Japan and the United States, and gChem's sale to ContextLogic has put the Western supply base in focus.
The question this report answers
How large is the high-purity DMSO market, who can supply pharmaceutical and electronic grades at scale, and where can gChem grow under ContextLogic ownership?
1. Demand: who uses high-purity DMSO and where it is growing
Pharmaceutical synthesis and formulation is the largest high-purity use; Asia Pacific is the largest consuming region, led by semiconductor and display fabs.
Demand by application (share of 2025 consumption, Market Krystal analysis)
– Pharmaceutical API synthesis and excipient (incl. GLP-1 peptides): 45%
– Semiconductor photoresist stripping and post-etch cleaning: 22%
– Display (TFT-LCD and OLED) resist strip and rinse: 13%
– Cell and gene therapy cryopreservation and bioprocessing: 8%
– Laboratory, analytical and bioreagent: 7%
– Battery, perovskite and other electronic materials: 5%
Application shares are a Market Krystal estimate scaled from the pharmaceutical share of about 35% of all-grade use (Credence) and gChem's named end markets (ContextLogic); regional shares are the all-grade split from Credence and are used as a proxy.
Demand by region (share of 2025 consumption)
– Asia Pacific: 34% (Credence Research)
– North America: 32% (Credence Research)
– Europe: 26% (Credence Research)
– Latin America: 5% (Credence Research)
– Middle East and Africa: 3% (Credence Research)
Where demand grows fastest to 2035
– Semiconductor and electronics: Electronics and semiconductors are the fastest-growing DMSO application at a 7.8% CAGR to 2033 (Persistence Market Research), with electronic grade growing at 7.2% (Persistence Market Research)
– Cell and gene therapy: gChem has more than 30 customer engagements for its sterile pharmaceutical grade in cell and gene therapy (ContextLogic)
– Replacement of NMP and DMF: DMSO holds 14% of a 331 mn lb North American and European aprotic solvent pool where NMP holds 37% (ContextLogic), leaving room for substitution gains to 2035
2. Supply: who makes high-purity DMSO and how much
Three scaled producers dominate: Hubei Xingfa (China), Toray Fine Chemicals (Japan and China) and gChem/Gaylord Chemical (United States). Hubei Xingfa holds 60,000 t/yr, which it reports as more than half of global DMSO capacity, implying world capacity of roughly 110-120 kt/yr (Guosen Securities).
Main producers and capacity
– gChem (Gaylord Chemical) (United States): Integrated plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with on-site precursors; 96-99% uptime (ContextLogic (SEC Form 8-K))
– Hubei Xingfa Chemicals Group (China): 60,000 t/yr, incl. 50,000 t/yr at Xinjiang Xingfa (Guosen Securities research on Hubei Xingfa)
– Toray Fine Chemicals (Japan): 17,000 t/yr at Chiba and Tokai (Toray Fine Chemicals, as reported by Outsourcing-Pharma)
– Cangzhou Toray Fine Chemicals (China): 10,000 t/yr JV with Sinopac Asset Management (Toray Fine Chemicals, as reported by Outsourcing-Pharma)
– Zhuzhou Hansen Chemicals (China): Electronic-grade producer; capacity not published (QYResearch (via Valuates))
Production by region (share of 2025 output, Market Krystal analysis)
– China: 70%
– Japan: 15%
– United States: 12%
– Rest of world: 3%
Trade and supply-demand balance
China is the main exporter and runs a structural surplus; North America and Europe import, with gChem the only Western Hemisphere producer (ContextLogic) and smaller Asian entrants yet to make inroads there (ContextLogic).
3. Value chain: from feedstock to end market
Methanol + Sulfur / hydrogen sulfide + Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) → high-purity DMSO → Pharmaceutical API synthesis and excipient (incl. GLP-1 peptides), Semiconductor photoresist stripping and post-etch cleaning, Display (TFT-LCD and OLED) resist strip and rinse
Raw materials
– Methanol: Methyl source for dimethyl sulfide; the main variable cost input (IMARC)
– Sulfur / hydrogen sulfide: Sulfur source for dimethyl sulfide; Xingfa and gChem are back-integrated (IMARC; ContextLogic)
– Dimethyl sulfide (DMS): Direct precursor; captive supply decides cost position, as at Toray's Cangzhou JV (Outsourcing-Pharma)
Production route
Methanol and sulfur feedstocks give dimethyl sulfide, which is oxidised to DMSO and then distilled and purified to pharmaceutical (cGMP, Type II DMF) or electronic grade with metals at 10 ppb maximum (Gaylord Chemical).
Downstream
High-purity DMSO goes to API makers and CDMOs, formulated stripper suppliers to semiconductor and display fabs, and cell-therapy media makers.
Price, cost and margin
Western delivered prices run at roughly twice Chinese levels (IMARC); multi-year contracts with escalators protect gChem margins (ContextLogic). DMSO sold at about USD 5,190/t in the US and USD 2,630/t in China in Q1 2026 (IMARC). Margin sits in purification, GMP qualification and contracts: gChem's operating income rose from USD 17.3 mn to USD 51.9 mn between 2019 and LTM March 2026 (ContextLogic), and Xinjiang Xingfa earned a 32.8% net margin in H1 2025 (Guosen Securities).
Where the chain is tightest
Qualified Western supply rests on a single plant in Tuscaloosa, so pharmaceutical and fab customers have few switching options outside China and Japan.
Who sits where in the chain
– Integrated dmso producer: gChem (Gaylord Chemical), Hubei Xingfa Chemicals Group
– Owner / investor: ContextLogic Holdings, EagleTree Capital
– Dmso producer: Toray Fine Chemicals, Cangzhou Toray Fine Chemicals, Zhuzhou Hansen Chemicals
– Financing: Blackstone Credit & Insurance
4. Market size: what demand, supply and price add up to
Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Four publishers put all-grade DMSO at USD 226-291 mn for 2022-2026 (MarketsandMarkets, Credence, 360iResearch, Persistence). No publisher gives a public value for high-purity grades alone; QYResearch tracks electronic grade without a public figure. Market Krystal applies a 45-55% high-purity share to the USD 265-290 mn all-grade cluster, in line with pharmaceutical grade at about 45% of demand (Credence) and industrial grade at 52% (Persistence). The range is checked against Western DMSO prices of about USD 5,000-5,450/t versus about USD 2,600-2,800/t in China (IMARC), which supports a value premium for purified and GMP grades. On this basis we use USD 120-165 mn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.
How published estimates compare
Publishers cluster at USD 226-291 mn for all grades but differ on base year and growth (5.5-7.5%); none publishes a public high-purity value. Market Krystal sizes only pharmaceutical, sterile and electronic grades by applying grade shares to the cluster and testing them against regional price differentials.

– DMSO sold at USD 5,188/t in the US versus USD 2,628/t in China in March 2026 (IMARC)
5. Outlook to 2035 and scenarios to 2047
Regulation and substitution
REACH and US restrictions on NMP and DMF push formulators toward DMSO, while FDA Drug Master Files gate entry into pharmaceutical grade.
Recent developments among key stakeholders
– Aug 2026: ContextLogic signed a definitive agreement to acquire gChem from EagleTree Capital funds for USD 850 mn, financed by a USD 650 mn rights offering and a USD 250 mn term loan (ContextLogic (SEC Form 8-K))
– Feb 2026: ContextLogic closed its purchase of US Salt, its first operating business; gChem will be its second (ContextLogic)
– Aug 2025: Hubei Xingfa reported DMSO capacity of 60,000 t/yr and a green DMSO synthesis route that won a CPCIF first prize (Guosen Securities)
What this means for the market
Pharmaceutical buyers and fab chemical suppliers in North America and Europe face a concentrated supply base, with one Western plant now changing hands. ContextLogic is guiding 5-10% organic growth without major growth capex for five years (ContextLogic), so new volume must come from debottlenecking, sterile grades and NMP substitution. Buyers should secure dual qualification with Toray or Xingfa grades, and Chinese producers have a price gap to exploit if they qualify GMP and low-metals grades in the West.
Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: High-purity DMSO grows at 6-7% a year to 2035 on GLP-1 and peptide synthesis, cell therapy and advanced-node stripping, then slows to 4-5% to 2047 as substitution of NMP matures.
– Constrained supply: An outage at Tuscaloosa or US tariffs on Chinese DMSO tighten Western GMP supply, lift US prices well above the Q1 2026 level of about USD 5,190/t (IMARC) and speed qualification of Japanese grades.
– Technology transition: Dry and plasma resist-strip processes and water-based cleaners cut solvent use per wafer, while battery and perovskite uses add new low-metals demand.
The swing factor for high-purity DMSO is Western qualification of Chinese pharmaceutical and electronic grades. Signposts: ContextLogic deal close, gChem capacity debottlenecks, new FDA DMF filings for DMSO, Xingfa electronic-grade expansions, EU and US NMP restrictions, US-China chemical tariffs.
