Market overview

Hydrochloric acid is hydrogen chloride gas dissolved in water. It is used to pickle steel, acidize oil wells, treat water, process food and make chemicals. Most of it is a by-product of chlorine-consuming processes such as PVC and chlorinated organics, and a smaller share is made on purpose. Supply therefore follows chlor-alkali and chlorinated-chemical operating rates, not acid demand.

The question this report answers
How large is the hydrochloric acid market, and which regional price and supply risks should buyers and producers plan for to 2035?

Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Four publishers cluster at USD 2.0-2.33 bn (Grand View, Polaris, Insight Partners, Business Research Company). The rest range from USD 0.55 bn to USD 3.84 bn, and IMARC sits at USD 2.6 bn. The low end multiplies Mordor's 2025 volume of 7.72 million tons by the regional price levels reported by Expert Market Research, ChemAnalyst and IMARC for 2025-26, about USD 175-250 per ton (Expert Market Research, ChemAnalyst, IMARC). That gives roughly USD 1.4-1.9 bn. The high end follows the upper cluster of published values (IMARC, Grand View Research), which also covers premium high-purity grades. The range is indicative because reporters disagree on regional price levels. On this basis we use USD 1.4-2.4 bn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.

Market dynamics
– Demand: Steel pickling, oil well acidizing, water treatment, food processing and chemical intermediates drive use (Reports and Data). Chemicals took 32.34% of 2025 volume (Mordor Intelligence).
– Supply: Supply is mainly a by-product of chlor-alkali, PVC and chlorinated organics. Producers named by publishers include Olin, Occidental, BASF, Dow, Shin-Etsu and AGC (Market Research Future, Grand View Research, The Business Research Company). European chlorine output fell 3.1% to 7,787,394 t in 2025, at 67.6% utilisation (Euro Chlor).
– Price and margin: Prices differ sharply by region. US prices averaged USD 215/MT and Germany USD 243/MT in Q2 2026 (Expert Market Research). China FOB was USD 26.80/MT in Aug 2026 (Procurement Resource). North America fell 11.4% to USD 203/MT in Sep 2026 (IMARC). Treat all levels as indicative.
– Regulation and substitution: Registration is required before manufacture or import into the EEA, with duties set by tonnage band (ECHA). Corrosion pushes users toward graphite and other resistant equipment (SGL Carbon). In some uses, sulfuric acid is a possible substitute.

Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– Global market valued at USD 2.6 bn in 2025, rising to USD 4.1 bn by 2034 at a 4.65% CAGR (IMARC Group)
– Global market valued at USD 2.0 bn in 2025, reaching USD 3.0 bn by 2033 at a 5.4% CAGR (Grand View Research)
– Global volume of 7.72 million tons in 2025, 8.14 million tons in 2026 and 10.63 million tons by 2031 (5.48% CAGR) (Mordor Intelligence)
– Asia-Pacific held over 42.6% of the market in 2025 (IMARC Group)
– European chlorine production was 7,787,394 t in 2025, down 3.1% on 2024, at 67.6% capacity utilisation (Euro Chlor)
– Westlake's Wilhelmshaven PVC site has capacity of 380,000 t/y of PVC, acquired in June 2026 (Westlake)

Recent developments among key stakeholders
– Oct 2026: SGL Carbon promotes impregnated graphite heat exchangers for hydrochloric, sulfuric and phosphoric acid duties, citing service life that can exceed 20 years (SGL Carbon)
– Sep 2026: Westlake announces closure of its Cologne PVC plant, citing weak demand, elevated energy costs and import pressure from Asia (Westlake)
– Sep 2026: The US Hart-Scott-Rodino waiting period for the Olin-Huntsman merger expires. Shareholders of both companies approved the deal on 25 Aug 2026 (Huntsman)
– Jul 2026: The SEC declares the Olin-Huntsman Form S-4 effective. Completion is expected in the first half of 2027, with more than USD 300 million of annual cost synergies targeted by year three (Huntsman)
– Jun 2026: Westlake completes the acquisition of the Wilhelmshaven PVC and VCM site in Germany, with PVC capacity of 380,000 t/y (Westlake)
– Dec 2025: Westlake's North American chlorovinyls units ceased operations, including a diaphragm chlor-alkali unit at Lake Charles South (Westlake)

What this means for the market
Hydrochloric acid supply is tied to chlorine and PVC operating rates. Closures such as Cologne and Lake Charles can tighten by-product availability in their regions, while weak chlor-alkali demand can leave surplus acid on the spot market. Buyers in pickling, oilfield and water treatment should contract against regional indices and keep a second source. Merchant distributors without integrated chlorine face the thinnest margins.

How published estimates compare
Publishers differ on scope, base year and grade coverage. Four publishers cluster at USD 2.0-2.33 bn (Grand View Research, Polaris, The Insight Partners, The Business Research Company), IMARC sits at USD 2.6 bn, and outliers range from USD 0.55 bn to USD 3.84 bn. Market Krystal publishes a range checked against volume (Mordor Intelligence) and regional price reports (ChemAnalyst, Expert Market Research, IMARC), not a single point.

Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Demand grows steadily with steel, water treatment and chemicals to 2047. Supply stays by-product led, with Asia-Pacific the largest consumer and regional price gaps persisting.
– Constrained supply: Further chlor-alkali and PVC closures in Europe and North America cut by-product acid. Regional shortages lift prices, and on-purpose production and imports fill the gap.
– Technology transition: High-purity grades for semiconductors and battery recycling take a larger share. Acid regeneration and closed-loop pickling cut virgin acid demand per tonne of steel.
The swing factor for hydrochloric acid is Chlorine and PVC operating rates. Signposts: Euro Chlor monthly chlorine output, chlor-alkali and PVC closures, caustic soda stocks, steel output, oilfield drilling activity, regional price indices, Olin-Huntsman closing.
