Description
Polyacrylamide (PAM)Market Outlook, 2026-2035 forecast; 2036-2047 scenarios
Polyacrylamide (PAM) market 2025: size, demand by water treatment, EOR, mining and dust control, producers SNF and Kemira, acrylamide cost and outlook.
Market overview
Polyacrylamide is a water-soluble polymer made from acrylamide, sold as anionic, cationic and non-ionic grades in powder, emulsion and solution form. PAM is used as a flocculant in water and sludge treatment, as a friction reducer and mobility-control agent in oil and gas, in mineral processing and papermaking, and increasingly as a dust suppressant and soil stabiliser. Supply depends on acrylamide monomer, itself made from propylene-derived acrylonitrile, and is concentrated in a few integrated producers led by SNF.
The question this report answers
How large is the PAM market in 2025, who controls supply and monomer, and how much growth can dust suppression and soil stabilisation add alongside water treatment, oil and gas and mining?
1. Demand: who uses PAM and where it is growing
Water and sludge treatment is the largest use and North America the largest region, driven by shale friction reducers (Market.us, SNS Insider).
Demand by application (share of 2024 consumption, Market Krystal analysis)
– Water and wastewater treatment, sludge dewatering: 46%
– Oil and gas: EOR polymer and fracking friction reducers: 24%
– Mining and mineral processing (tailings, thickening, filtration): 13%
– Paper and board (retention, drainage, strength): 10%
– Dust suppression, soil stabilisation and erosion control: 4%
– Other (cosmetics, textiles, agriculture): 3%
Water treatment is set between the two published shares; other application and regional shares are Market Krystal estimates scaled from SNF's investment pattern, ChemAnalyst regional demand notes and the North America share published by Market.us.
Demand by region (share of 2024 consumption)
– North America: 43% (Market.us (43.3%))
– Asia-Pacific: 33% (Market Krystal estimate)
– Europe: 13% (Market Krystal estimate)
– Middle East and Africa: 6% (Market Krystal estimate)
– Latin America: 5% (Market Krystal estimate)
Where demand grows fastest to 2035
– Mining dust control and tailings: Mining is the largest end use for dust control polymers, a segment growing about 6.2% a year to 2036 (FMI) (Future Market Insights)
– Chemical EOR in the Middle East: SNF is building a USD 250 mn plant in Oman for anionic EOR polymers, signalling regional EOR demand growth to 2035 (SNF via Oman Observer)
– Municipal and industrial water treatment: Water treatment stays the core growth engine, with the overall market growing about 4.8-6.0% a year (IMARC, Market.us)
2. Supply: who makes PAM and how much
SNF holds almost half of world production, followed by Kemira, Solenis and a group of Chinese producers including Beijing Hengju and Anhui Jucheng (SNF, IMARC). SNF alone has 1.67 Mt of PAM capacity and says this is almost half of global production, implying about 3.3-3.5 Mt of world capacity (SNF).
Main producers and capacity
– SNF Group (France): 1,670,000 t/yr across 23 production sites; new EOR plant in Oman (SNF)
– Kemira (Finland): Emulsion polymers and bio-acrylamide in Mobile, Alabama; dry PAM JV plant in Ulsan, South Korea
– Solenis (incl. former BASF paper and water chemicals) (United States): PAM powder and emulsion plants; listed as key producer (SNS Insider key-player list; Solenis)
– NNA Polymers (United States): 200,000 t/yr plant planned in Big Spring, Texas, startup late 2026
– Beijing Hengju Chemical Group (China): Named key producer; capacity not published (IMARC key-player list)
– Anhui Jucheng Fine Chemicals (China): Named key producer; capacity not published (IMARC key-player list)
– Anhui Tianrun Chemicals (China): Named key producer; capacity not published (IMARC, SNS Insider key-player lists)
– Black Rose Industries (India): Named key producer; capacity not published (IMARC, SNS Insider key-player lists)
Production by region (share of 2025 output, Market Krystal analysis)
– China and rest of Asia-Pacific: 40%
– North America: 30%
– Europe: 18%
– Middle East and Africa: 7%
– Latin America and Oceania: 5%
Trade and supply-demand balance
China is a low-cost exporter at about USD 860/t, while North America remains short and higher priced at about USD 2,350/t, which pulls in imports and new US capacity such as NNA Polymers (ChemAnalyst, NNA Polymers).
3. Value chain: from feedstock to end market
Acrylonitrile (from propylene and ammonia) + Acrylamide monomer + Comonomers (acrylic acid, sodium acrylate, cationic quats) → PAM → Water and wastewater treatment, sludge dewatering, Oil and gas: EOR polymer and fracking friction reducers, Mining and mineral processing (tailings, thickening, filtration)
Raw materials
– Acrylonitrile (from propylene and ammonia): Sets acrylamide cost; European acrylamide prices rose in early 2025 on higher propylene (ChemAnalyst) (ChemAnalyst)
– Acrylamide monomer: Main raw material; leaders now make it in-house by enzymatic hydration, as at SNF Lara and Kemira Mobile (SNF, Kemira)
– Comonomers (acrylic acid, sodium acrylate, cationic quats): Set charge type and density for anionic and cationic grades (Market Krystal estimate)
Production route
Acrylonitrile is hydrated to acrylamide, mostly by enzymatic (bio) catalysis, then polymerised by gel, inverse-emulsion or solution polymerisation and dried to powder or sold as emulsion (SNF, Kemira).
Downstream
PAM goes direct to water utilities, oil field service companies, miners and paper mills, or through formulators that blend it into dust suppressants, soil stabilisers and erosion-control products.
Price, cost and margin
Prices split sharply by region, from about USD 860/t in China to USD 2,350/t in North America in Q1 2025 (ChemAnalyst). Prices ran from about USD 860/t in China to USD 2,350/t in North America in Q1 2025 (ChemAnalyst). Monomer and energy are the main cost drivers, and margin sits with integrated producers and with application service in EOR and mining.
Where the chain is tightest
Acrylamide monomer supply is the constraint: it is toxic, hard to ship and tied to acrylonitrile, so non-integrated PAM makers carry cost and supply risk.
Who sits where in the chain
– Monomer and polymer: SNF Group, Kemira, NNA Polymers, Black Rose Industries
– Polymer and service: Solenis
– Polymer production: Beijing Hengju Chemical Group, Anhui Jucheng Fine Chemicals, Anhui Tianrun Chemicals
– Formulation and service: Ecolab / Nalco Water
– Formulation and application: Midwest Industrial Supply
4. Market size: what demand, supply and price add up to
Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Three publishers agree closely: USD 5.6-5.9 bn for 2024 (Market.us, SNS Insider) and USD 6.1 bn for 2025 (IMARC), with growth of about 5-6% a year. The range brackets the three published estimates rolled forward to 2025. It is checked against SNF's 1.67 Mt capacity, which SNF says is almost half of world output, implying roughly 3.3-3.5 Mt of global production, and against ChemAnalyst prices of USD 860/t in China and USD 2,350/t in North America; the volume check is indicative because it rests on capacity, not output. On this basis we use USD 5.6-6.4 bn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.
How published estimates compare
Publishers agree within about 10% on value, though application splits differ, with water treatment at 42% (SNS Insider) versus 56.3% (Market.us). Market Krystal reconciles value with SNF's capacity disclosure and regional ChemAnalyst prices rather than relying on a single top-down figure.
Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– Global PAM market USD 6.1 bn in 2025, forecast USD 9.4 bn by 2034 at 4.84% CAGR (IMARC)
– SNF has 1,670,000 t of PAM capacity, almost half of global production (SNF)
– Water treatment held 56.3% and North America 43.3% of the market in 2024 (Market.us)
– PAM prices in Q1 2025: about USD 2,350/t in North America and USD 860/t in China (ChemAnalyst)
– NNA Polymers plans a 200,000 t/yr PAM plant in Texas with integrated monomer, startup late 2026 (NNA Polymers)
– Dust control polymers market USD 1,129.9 mn in 2025, with mining 34% of end use (Future Market Insights)
5. Outlook to 2035 and scenarios to 2047
Regulation and substitution
Acrylamide is a classified carcinogen; the EU restricts it in grouting and caps it in drinking water, which keeps residual-monomer control central (EU).
Recent developments among key stakeholders
– Oct 2025: NNA Polymers announced a 200,000 t/yr PAM plant in Big Spring, Texas, with integrated monomer supply and startup expected by late 2026 (NNA Polymers via Tank Terminals)
– Dec 2024: SNF began civil works on its USD 250 mn anionic EOR polymer plant in Oman, with first production phase targeted for 2025 (Oman Observer)
– Jun 2024: SNF Australia completed an AUD 18 mn upgrade at Lara that brings acrylamide in-house and plans new dust control products for mining (Australian Manufacturing)
What this means for the market
US buyers face the highest prices and should expect relief only as new Gulf Coast and Texas capacity starts. Miners and road contractors can source PAM-based dust suppressants from the same producers that supply their flocculants, which favours bundled contracts. Non-integrated producers are exposed to acrylamide and propylene swings, while SNF, Kemira and NNA Polymers are moving monomer in-house.
Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Demand grows about 4-5% a year to 2035 and slows to 2-3% to 2047, led by water reuse, mining and Middle East EOR, while shale friction-reducer demand plateaus.
– Constrained supply: Acrylonitrile outages or tighter acrylamide rules lift monomer costs and favour integrated producers, widening the gap between Chinese and Western prices.
– Technology transition: Bio-based and low-residual-monomer grades, plus natural polymer blends in dust and soil control, take share in sensitive uses, while EOR adopts higher-performance sulfonated grades.
The swing factor for PAM is acrylamide monomer cost and regulation. Signposts: acrylonitrile and propylene prices, US shale completions, Middle East EOR polymer tenders, EU acrylamide limits, Chinese export prices, mining output in Australia and Chile.
