Description
Polycarbonate (BPA-based engineering resin)Market Outlook, 2026-2035 forecast; 2036-2047 scenarios
Polycarbonate market report: published 2025 estimates, producers and capacity, Covestro Antwerp cut, EU BPA rules, price trends and forecasts to 2035.
Market overview
Polycarbonate is a clear, tough engineering thermoplastic made from bisphenol-A (BPA) and a carbonate source, by the phosgene (interfacial) route or the melt route. It goes into electronics housings, automotive lighting and glazing, building sheet, medical devices and optical media. Supply is set by BPA and phenol-acetone chain costs, energy prices and a small group of large integrated producers, now joined by fast-growing Chinese capacity.
The question this report answers
How large is the global polycarbonate market, and how will European capacity cuts, Asian oversupply and EU bisphenol rules change price and sourcing risk for buyers through 2035?
Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Published 2025 estimates span USD 11.8-27.5 bn. IMARC is lowest, ChemAnalyst and Fortune Business Insights sit near USD 16 bn, and the remaining publishers range from USD 18 bn to USD 27.5 bn. Market Krystal multiplied published 2025 resin demand of 5.25-6.32 million tons (Expert Market Research, Mordor Intelligence) by a blended resin price of about USD 2,300-2,850/t, which spans Asian export levels and European levels (Procurement Resource, ChemAnalyst). The result sits close to the ChemAnalyst, Grand View Research (Horizon) and Fortune Business Insights cluster, and price inputs are indicative because they are 2026 quotes. On this basis we use USD 12-18 bn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.
Market dynamics
– Demand: Electrical and electronics is the largest use at 37.78% of 2025 volume and Asia-Pacific takes 65.22% (Mordor Intelligence); European automotive and lighting buyers are restocking cautiously (ChemAnalyst).
– Supply: Covestro and SABIC each hold more than 1.4 Mt of capacity (HDIN Research), with Wanhua, Mitsubishi Chemical, Lotte Chemical, LG Chem, Teijin, Chi Mei, Formosa and Trinseo behind them; Chinese and Korean build-out has created standard-grade oversupply (Covestro).
– Price and margin: European prices spiked in March 2026 on Gulf-conflict costs (ICIS), then eased: Hamburg injection grade averaged USD 2,564/t in Q3 2026, down 3.25% on the quarter (ChemAnalyst), against USD 1,962.66/t EXW China in July 2026 (Procurement Resource).
– Regulation and substitution: EU Regulation 2024/3190 bans BPA in food contact materials, with the main transition ending 20 July 2026 (European Commission, Food Packaging Forum); packaging uses face substitution, while electronics and automotive uses are not covered.
Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– Global polycarbonate demand was 6.32 million tons in 2025, forecast at a 5.35% CAGR to 8.64 million tons by 2031 (Mordor Intelligence)
– Global polycarbonate volume was 5.25 MMT in 2025, forecast at a 3.30% CAGR to 7.26 MMT by 2035 (Expert Market Research)
– Global installed polycarbonate capacity is about 8.1 million metric tons; Covestro and SABIC each exceed 1.4 million metric tons (HDIN Research)
– Global polycarbonate market of USD 11.8 bn in 2025, rising to USD 18.0 bn by 2034 at a 4.62% CAGR (IMARC Group)
– Covestro plans to cut Antwerp polycarbonate lines from four to one and stop local BPA production, affecting up to 260 of about 970 site employees (Covestro)
– About 11% of polycarbonate imports into Europe came from the Middle East in 2025 (ICIS)
Recent developments among key stakeholders
– Oct 2026: Covestro NV intends to consolidate Antwerp polycarbonate production from four lines to one and end local BPA production. The remaining line would focus on specialty grades such as heat-resistant APEC. Employee consultation has started and no final decision has been taken (Covestro)
– Oct 2026: Covestro and distributor ALBIS marked 60 years of partnership at Fakuma 2026. The tie-up covers polycarbonate, polycarbonate blends and TPU, and targets e-mobility, healthcare and circularity applications (Covestro)
– Aug 2026: Mitsubishi Gas Chemical was selected for Niigata City's perovskite solar demonstration, testing a self-powered IoT system that integrates its high-performance polycarbonate components (Mitsubishi Gas Chemical)
– Aug 2026: Mitsubishi Gas Chemical signed a triple-star sponsorship for the Yokohama dispatch base at GREEN×EXPO 2027 (19 March to 26 September 2027). It will show a concept that integrates its high-performance polycarbonate with Enecoat Technologies perovskite solar cells (Mitsubishi Gas Chemical)
– Jul 2026: The main transition period of the EU ban on BPA in food contact materials ended on 20 July 2026. From that date most food contact articles made with BPA can no longer be placed on the EU market for the first time (Food Packaging Forum (citing European Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/3190))
– Mar 2026: European polycarbonate prices rose sharply after the Gulf conflict raised energy and logistics costs. Buyers reported short offer validity, multiple surcharges and difficulty securing Asian material, while underlying demand stayed stagnant (ICIS)
What this means for the market
Standard-grade polycarbonate is moving to a structurally oversupplied Asian base, while Europe is shrinking its commodity capacity and keeping specialty grades. European converters in electronics, lighting and sheet should expect more import dependence and should qualify a second source outside the Middle East and Far East freight chain. Producers outside Asia need a specialty or recycled-content position to defend margin. Food-contact and drinkware makers in the EU must confirm BPA-free routes before the remaining transition dates.
How published estimates compare
Published 2025 values run from USD 11.8 bn to USD 27.5 bn, a spread of more than two times. The lower and middle estimates (IMARC, ChemAnalyst, Grand View Research Horizon, Fortune Business Insights) look like resin-level sizing, while the highest figures probably include a wider scope; most public pages do not state their method. Market Krystal builds its range from published volume and recognised price assessments, so it can be checked line by line.
Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Demand grows at a mid-single-digit pace to 2035 led by Asia-Pacific electronics and mobility, then slows toward 2047. Standard-grade oversupply persists, so Asian capacity runs below nameplate and further European rationalisation follows the Covestro Antwerp plan. Specialty, flame-retardant and recycled-content grades earn a growing premium.
– Constrained supply: A prolonged Gulf or freight disruption, further European closures and tighter BPA supply cut available standard resin into Europe. Import premiums widen, surcharges return and converters pay spot prices well above Asian levels until Asian or Indian exporters re-route.
– Technology transition: Chemical recycling, bio-circular and phosgene-free melt routes gain share as OEMs set Scope 3 targets. BPA-free copolymers and alternative engineering plastics take part of the food-contact and packaging volume, and virgin commodity grades lose pricing power.
The swing factor for polycarbonate is Pace of Chinese capacity start-ups versus European closures. Signposts: Covestro Antwerp consultation outcome, Asian operating rates, Brent and LNG prices, Gulf shipping disruption, EU bisphenol rules and remaining transition dates, automotive and electronics build rates, recycled-content mandates.
