Market overview

Calcium formate is the calcium salt of formic acid, a white water-soluble powder. It is the standard set accelerator in cement tile adhesives, grouts, self-levelling and repair mortars, and is also a feed acidifier, a leather tanning aid and a concrete admixture. Supply comes from two routes: neutralising formic acid with lime, mainly in China, and co-production with pentaerythritol and trimethylolpropane polyols at Perstorp and LANXESS.

The question this report answers
How large is the calcium formate market for tile adhesives and dry-mix mortars, who supplies it, and how will polyol co-product economics and Chinese formic acid capacity shape price and supply to 2035?

1. Demand: who uses calcium formate and where it is growing

Construction is the largest use, led by tile adhesives, dry-mix mortars and concrete set acceleration (Polaris), and Asia Pacific is the largest region at 53.56% of 2025 revenue (Fortune Business Insights).

Demand by application (share of 2025 consumption)
– Tile adhesives, grouts and dry-mix mortars: 32% (Market Krystal estimate)
– Animal feed acidifier and calcium source: 28% (Fortune Business Insights)
– Concrete and cement set acceleration: 18% (Market Krystal estimate)
– Leather tanning: 8% (Market Krystal estimate)
– Other: drilling fluids, flue gas desulphurisation, textiles, foliar fertiliser: 14% (Market Krystal estimate)
The feed share uses Fortune Business Insights' 27.7% feed-grade share for 2026; construction, leather and other shares are Market Krystal estimates guided by Polaris naming construction and concrete setting as the largest uses. Regions are set between Fortune Business Insights' 53.56% and Global Market Insights' implied 39% for Asia Pacific.

Demand by region (share of 2025 consumption, Market Krystal analysis)
– Asia Pacific: 50%
– Europe: 25%
– North America: 10%
– Middle East and Africa: 9%
– Latin America: 6%

Where demand grows fastest to 2035
– Feed grade: Feed-grade demand for piglets and poultry is growing about 5.9% a year as antibiotic-free farming spreads (ChemAnalyst)
– Tile adhesives and dry-mix in South Asia and MENA: Chinese exports to Turkey, India and the CIS follow dry-mix mortar growth, with seasonal restocking each winter (ChemAnalyst)

2. Supply: who makes calcium formate and how much

Main producers are Perstorp (Petronas Chemicals) and LANXESS as polyol co-producers, plus Chinese makers such as Chongqing Chuandong, Zibo Ruibao and Shandong Baoyuan. Perstorp added 26 kt/yr of calcium formate in India in 2024 (Perstorp); global capacity is indicatively 1.5-2.0 Mt/yr, mostly in China (Market Krystal estimate).

Main producers and capacity
– Perstorp (Petronas Chemicals) (Germany): Penta and calcium formate at Bruchhausen; ProPhorce AC 200 feed grade and calcium formate Tech (Perstorp)
– Perstorp Chemicals India (India): 26 kt/yr calcium formate with 40 kt/yr penta at Sayakha, Gujarat, from Feb 2024 (Perstorp)
– LANXESS (Germany): Calcium formate as by-product of TMP made at Krefeld-Uerdingen (LANXESS (via CHEManager / chemeurope))
– Chongqing Chuandong Chemical (Group) (China): Named among leading producers (Global Market Insights)
– Zibo Ruibao Chemical (China): Named among leading producers (Global Market Insights)
– GEO Specialty Chemicals (US): Named among leading producers (Global Market Insights)

Production by region (share of 2025 output, Market Krystal analysis)
– China: 65%
– Europe: 20%
– India: 6%
– North America: 5%
– Rest of world: 4%

Trade and supply-demand balance
China is the main exporter, shipping from Qingdao and Tianjin to South Asia, MENA, Turkey and the CIS (ChemAnalyst), while Europe is largely served by Perstorp and LANXESS co-product supply plus Chinese imports.

3. Value chain: from feedstock to end market

Formic acid + Calcium hydroxide (lime) + Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde or n-butyraldehyde → calcium formate → Tile adhesives, grouts and dry-mix mortars, Animal feed acidifier and calcium source, Concrete and cement set acceleration

Raw materials
– Formic acid: Main cost input for the neutralisation route; formic acid fell 7.9% in Oct 2025 and pulled calcium formate down (ChemAnalyst) (ChemAnalyst)
– Calcium hydroxide (lime): Calcium source in both routes; easing hydrated lime trimmed costs in Aug 2026 (ChemAnalyst)
– Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde or n-butyraldehyde: Polyol feedstocks; calcium formate is the co-product of penta and TMP made with lime (Perstorp; LANXESS)
– Methanol and energy: Methanol feeds formaldehyde and formic acid; a mid-single-digit drop in Aug 2026 let producers cut offers (ChemAnalyst)

Production route
Most Chinese supply neutralises formic acid with lime, while Perstorp and LANXESS recover calcium formate from Cannizzaro-type polyol reactions, giving about 0.5 t per t of penta or TMP by stoichiometry (Market Krystal estimate) and 26 kt per 40 kt penta at Perstorp India (Perstorp).

Downstream
Calcium formate goes to dry-mix mortar and tile adhesive makers, concrete admixture blenders, feed premix and acidifier formulators, and tanneries.

Price, cost and margin
Asian prices stayed at low levels in late 2025 as formic acid fell 7.9% in October (ChemAnalyst), and Chinese producers ran at about 65-70% in August 2026 (ChemAnalyst). Chinese prices sat at low levels through late 2025 and mid-2026 with high inventories and 65-70% operating rates (ChemAnalyst). For co-producers, margin depends on the polyol: LANXESS raised TMP prices about 20% in Mar 2026 on energy and feedstock costs (Procurement Resource), so calcium formate is priced to clear volume.

Where the chain is tightest
Co-product supply in Europe moves with penta and TMP output, not calcium formate demand, so a polyol cut or plant outage, such as the 2017 Bruchhausen power failure (Perstorp), tightens European feed and tile-adhesive grades.

Who sits where in the chain
– Polyol co-producer: Perstorp (Petronas Chemicals), LANXESS
– Formate producer: Chongqing Chuandong Chemical, Zibo Ruibao Chemical, Shandong Baoyuan Chemical, GEO Specialty Chemicals
– Feedstock producer: Luxi Chemical
– Feed formulator: Novus

4. Market size: what demand, supply and price add up to

Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Four publishers cluster at USD 610-871 mn (Polaris, Fortune Business Insights, Global Market Insights, ResearchAndMarkets) with 5-7% growth; a Chinese publisher shows a much lower USD 294 mn for 2026. Market Krystal takes the cluster of published estimates and checks it against an indicative 1.0-1.3 Mt of global use at a blended USD 500-650/t, set low because Chinese prices stayed weak through 2025-2026 (ChemAnalyst). Polyol co-product volume is cross-checked against Perstorp's 26 kt/yr calcium formate line alongside 40 kt/yr of penta in India (Perstorp). On this basis we use USD 600-800 mn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.

How published estimates compare
Four publishers place the market at USD 610-871 mn, while a Chinese publisher puts it at USD 294 mn, likely reflecting Chinese domestic prices. Market Krystal checks the published cluster against tonnage, Chinese price levels and polyol co-product ratios.

Key figures at a glance (third-party, cited)
– Calcium formate market valued at USD 871.25 mn in 2025, forecast at 5.40% CAGR to USD 1,391.49 mn in 2034 (Polaris Market Research)
– Market valued at USD 701.00 mn in 2025 with Asia Pacific at 53.56%; feed grade 27.7% of 2026 market (Fortune Business Insights)

5. Outlook to 2035 and scenarios to 2047

Regulation and substitution
In mortars calcium formate competes with calcium nitrate, aluminate cement and lithium salts as accelerators; in EU feed it is used within authorised acidifier preparations with formic acid caps (EUR-Lex).

Recent developments among key stakeholders
– Sep 2026: ChemAnalyst reported Chinese calcium formate prices stabilising after an early-August fall, with Hebei and Shandong producers at about 65-70% operating rates and weak construction demand (ChemAnalyst)
– Mar 2026: LANXESS raised trimethylolpropane prices by about 20% worldwide, citing energy, formaldehyde and n-butyraldehyde costs, which sets the economics of its calcium formate co-product (Procurement Resource)
– Nov 2025: Asian calcium formate prices held at low levels as formic acid fell 7.9% in October and factory inventories stayed high (ChemAnalyst)
– Feb 2024: Perstorp opened its Sayakha, India plant with 40 kt/yr of penta and 26 kt/yr of calcium formate, its largest Asian investment (Perstorp)
– Jun 2023: The European Commission amended authorisations for a benzoic acid, calcium formate and fumaric acid feed additive, capping formic acid at 10,000 mg/kg in complete feed when combined with other formates (European Commission (EUR-Lex))

What this means for the market
Tile adhesive and dry-mix makers can buy calcium formate cheaply while Chinese plants run below 70%, but European buyers depend on polyol-linked supply from Perstorp and LANXESS. Polyol price rises such as LANXESS's 2026 TMP increase help co-producers, but European calcium formate supply still moves with penta and TMP output. Perstorp's Indian plant gives South Asian mortar and feed makers a non-Chinese source.

Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Calcium formate grows about 5% a year to 2035, led by tile adhesives and dry-mix in South Asia, MENA and Southeast Asia and by antibiotic-free feed, with China supplying most volume.
– Constrained supply: European penta and TMP cuts on high energy costs and Chinese formic acid discipline tighten supply, lifting prices for feed and tile-adhesive grades.
– Technology transition: Low-clinker cements and new accelerators such as nano-C-S-H seeding take part of the mortar accelerator role, while feed demand keeps growing.
The swing factor for calcium formate is Chinese formic acid price and polyol co-product output. Signposts: ChemAnalyst calcium formate and formic acid prices, Chinese operating rates, Perstorp and LANXESS penta and TMP output, EU feed additive authorisations, tile adhesive growth in India and the Gulf, Chinese export volumes.
