Description
Propylene (propene)Market Outlook, 2026-2035 forecast; 2036-2047 scenarios
Propylene market report: published size estimates, PDH and cracker supply, 2026 price drivers, producers, regulation and forecasts to 2035 | Market Krystal
Market overview
Propylene is a colourless, extremely flammable gas and the second most widely used primary petrochemical after ethylene. Most of it goes into polypropylene, with the rest feeding propylene oxide, acrylonitrile, cumene, acrylic acid and oxo chemicals for packaging, automotive, construction and consumer goods. Supply comes from steam crackers, refinery FCC units, propane dehydrogenation (PDH) plants and methanol-based routes, so feedstock access and cracker or PDH run rates set availability.
The question this report answers
How large is the propylene market, and will 2026's feedstock disruption and PDH-led capacity growth keep buyers' costs volatile through 2035?
Market Krystal preliminary estimate (2025)
Nine value publishers cluster at USD 116-138 bn for 2025 (Precedence, Emergen, Fortune Business Insights, Next Move Strategy Consulting). Research and Markets is an outlier at USD 76.36 bn, and IMARC sizes volume at 137.10 Mt. Market Krystal multiplies the 100-137 Mt volume span (Next Move Strategy Consulting, IMARC) by an indicative 2025 average price of USD 800-950 per tonne across US, European and Asian benchmarks. It then sets the band where most published value estimates sit. The price check is indicative because the benchmarks moved widely through 2025. On this basis we use USD 95-130 bn. Confidence grade B: published estimates exist; the volume or price cross-check is partial.
Market dynamics
– Demand: Polypropylene was the largest derivative, with a 69.75% revenue share in 2022 (Grand View Research); China's PP exports reached about 639.4 kt in April 2026 (China Customs), and India's polyolefin demand softened after the festive build (ICIS).
– Supply: Enterprise Products runs two PDH units of 1.5 Mt/yr each (S&P Global); China held about 23 Mt of PDH nameplate capacity at end-March 2025 (OPIS); ZPC, Zibo Qixiang Tengda, Mitsubishi Chemical and Sumitomo Chemical are also active.
– Price and margin: Northeast Asian propylene hit its 2026 high and stayed at record levels on 21 October (ICIS); Shandong reached RMB 10,025/mt in September, a near seven-year high (SCI), while PDH losses reached about RMB 3,300/mt in Q1 2026 (SCI).
– Regulation and substitution: Propylene is extremely flammable, UN 1077 (IPCS INCHEM ICSC), with a TLV of 500 ppm, A4 not classifiable as a human carcinogen (ICSC); circular and low-carbon routes are emerging, not displacing fossil supply.

What this means for the market
Buyers of propylene and polypropylene face feedstock-driven price swings, not simple oversupply. Asian converters and Indian importers are most exposed to PDH run-rate and freight shocks. Integrated cracker operators in Europe and the US Gulf hold more cost stability than merchant PDH owners. Producers weighing circular or ammonia-fired routes should treat them as long-dated options.
How published estimates compare
Most publishers land between USD 116 bn and USD 138 bn for 2025, while Research and Markets sits at USD 76.36 bn. Growth rates run from about 3.6% to 9.7%. Public pages rarely describe method, and volume bases differ widely (100.54 Mt, Next Move Strategy Consulting; 137.10 Mt, IMARC). Market Krystal builds from volume times benchmark price and shows its range with the evidence behind it.
Strategic scenarios to 2047
– Base: Demand follows polypropylene and derivatives, with Asia leading. China's PDH and cracker additions keep Asian supply long in normal years, and prices track naphtha and propane costs. Capacity growth stays ahead of demand through the early 2030s, then rationalisation tightens the balance toward 2047.
– Constrained supply: Repeated Middle East shipping or US-China propane tariff shocks cut PDH feedstock again, with run rates near the 55% seen in April 2026. Propylene turns tight and volatile, trade flows shift, and spreads favour integrated and cracker-based producers.
– Technology transition: Pyrolysis-oil, methanol-from-by-product-gas and ammonia-fired cracker routes move from pilots to commercial plants. Recycled and low-carbon propylene earns a premium in regulated markets, while fossil routes still supply most volume.
The swing factor for propylene is Propane and naphtha feedstock access. Signposts: Strait of Hormuz shipping status, China PDH run rates, US-China propane tariff decisions, new PDH start-ups such as ZPC, Chinese PP export volumes, naphtha price trend, commercial-scale chemical recycling approvals.
